No Gods, No Monsters
No Gods, No Monsters | Cadwell Turnbull
20 posts | 23 read | 30 to read
One October morning, Laina gets the news that her brother was shot and killed by Boston cops. But what looks like a case of police brutality soon reveals something much stranger. Monsters are real. And they want everyone to know it. As creatures from myth and legend come out of the shadows, seeking safety through visibility, their emergence sets off a chain of seemingly unrelated events. Members of a local werewolf pack are threatened into silence. A professor follows a missing friend's trail of bread crumbs to a mysterious secret society. And a young boy with unique abilities seeks refuge in a pro-monster organization with secrets of its own. Meanwhile, more people start disappearing, suicides and hate crimes increase, and protests erupt globally, both for and against the monsters. At the center is a mystery no one thinks to ask: Why now? What has frightened the monsters out of the dark? The world will soon find out.

This fascinating novel explores a world of monsters, secret societies and movements for social change, all from a point of view that makes the whole story even more emotionally resonant and compelling. I never knew what was going to happen next, making for a surprising and suspenseful read. I picked this up on a whim at the library--today I'm heading back for the newly released sequel.

Hard to describe this one—it‘s a story about the monsters among us & what happens when they are revealed & people are forced to confront/acknowledge/adapt to them. In the story, these monsters are werewolves, witches, & more & along with them there are secret societies & unimaginable threats. Monsters stand in for marginalized people in our own society & this urban fantasy has a lot to say about othering, acceptance, & the real monsters.

Meshell1313 😮 that last name looks awfully familiar. 🤣 Had to do a double take! 1y

I very almost didn‘t see this thru. The first half is very confusing and dragged for too long, but once it gets goin…wow. You realize this is more of a philosophical and metaphorical piece than an actual novel- the characters‘ musings are incredible to read, and there are so many layers to the interwoven stories and dialogues! Very much worth it. I got the audiobook and the narration was also on point!

This was a mess. The author clearly had lots of good ideas, but chose to use ALL of them. Racism, magic, gender/sexuality spectrum, the multiverse . . . What did I miss? Anarcho-syndicalism for a few chapters, I think.

Changing from third to first person in ways that are supposed to surprise, but only confuse when you‘re barely following what might be Section One of a series, but doesn‘t cohere into a “Book.”

I loved this sci-fi/fantasy book. It's the start to a series and I'm excited beyond words to know when the next one will be published.

There's never a dull moment in this propulsive story that mixes mythology, monsters, and current social issues. While it has a lot going on, and it's weird and down right horrific at times, everything comes together for an excellent reading experience.

vivastory This sounds fantastic! 2y

This book was delightfully weird, with really good writing and some truly terrifying moments. I love the way Turnbull juxtaposed monsters and myths with modern events (police brutality, protests, social issues). Alternating POVs with a lot of characters, so I had to pay close attention, but it all came together thrillingly in the end. Very much looking forward to the rest of this series.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Audio narrated by Dion Graham, too.😍

This book had me looking up topics about physics and Nietzsche. I love a book that sparks my curiosity. This sci fi/ fantasy novel was brilliant if a little challenging to keep track of the characters and plot lines. It was both captivating and carried a strong message about justice. I was impressed with the integration at the end.

🎧 I was going to say it started slow then got confusing & weird but I don‘t think that adequately covers it.

I wasn‘t fond of the flashbacks, they threw me off a little but it was a super cool premise that I feel was setup here & will come to fruition in book 2.

Was it an unprovoked cop shooting? No. Monsters really do exist & they want you to know it … but why? What monster is big & scary enough to scare the monsters?

Good start.

I really wanted to love this bc the concept of monsters living amongst us juxtaposed with current events is such a good idea. But the shifting POV made the narrative really difficult to follow.

I can‘t adequately describe this book. It‘s totally bananapants (the multiverse, a long-standing impasse between good vs. evil, and paranormal creatures all factor heavily in the plot) while also being very grounded in reality (police shootings, protests, and fear of “others” also make appearances). There are no neat bows wrapped around the end, which makes sense as this is the first in a promised series. Who KNOWS where book two might take us?!

wanderinglynn Sounds fascinating. Stacked! 2y

This book was delightfully weird and dark. I have so many thoughts, I almost want to go back and read it again. It takes place in a universe where monsters exist and they have just revealed themselves to the world. But when the truth is swept under the rug, people must decide if it was real or conspiracy. Very fitting themes in today's world. The story is told from many characters' perspectives. I loved the mysteriousness of it all.

Andrew65 You‘ve done brilliantly 👏👏👏 3y

September was a wildly good reading month for me, probably because I finally got into the second trimester and the morning sickness and fatigue is been experiencing all summer finally started to fade. Really happy with how my #bookspinbingo turned out, and that I managed to catch up on my August and September #bookspin and #doublebookspin

4.5/5

This was an incredible story. It took me a few chapters to get into the story, since Turnbull did some really interesting things with intersecting storylines, and I really loved how all the stories connected into something much bigger going on. I also loved that the narrator had their own voice and character. It made the story super interesting to be invested in both the story happening, but also how the narrator was part of it.

SamAnne Really looking forward to this one. 3y

I came to No Gods, No Monsters with no expectations. As my first read by Cadwell Turnbull, I could have imagined that I was reading Stephen King. This urban fantasy deals with LGBT+ issues and family both that born in and that chosen. It's a fight between human and monster and if they can co-exist. It really needs to be concentrated on, or you will miss something. Love the characters and detail. Thanks Blackstone Publishing and NetGalley,
