Silence in the Library
Silence in the Library: A Lily Adler Mystery | Katharine Schellman
9 posts | 9 read | 3 to read
Regency widow Lily Adler didn't expect to find a corpse when visiting a family friend. Now it's up to her to discover the killer in the charming second installment in the Lily Adler mysteries. Regency widow Lily Adler has finally settled into her new London life when her semi-estranged father arrives unexpectedly, intending to stay with her while he recovers from an illness. Hounded by his disapproval, Lily is drawn into spending time with Lady Wyatt, the new wife of an old family friend. Lily barely knows Lady Wyatt. But she and her husband, Sir Charles, seem as happy as any newly married couple until the morning Lily arrives to find the house in an uproar and Sir Charles dead. All signs indicate that he tripped and struck his head late at night. But when Bow Street constable Simon Page is called to the scene, he suspects foul play. And it isn't long before Lily stumbles on evidence that Sir Charles was, indeed, murdered. Mr. Page was there when Lily caught her first murderer, and he trusts her insight into the world of London's upper class. With the help of Captain Jack Hartley, they piece together the reasons that Sir Charles's family might have wanted him dead. But anyone who might have profited from the old man's death seems to have an alibi... until Lily receives a mysterious summons to speak with one of the Wyatts' maids, only to find the young woman dead when she arrives. Mr. Page believes the surviving family members are hiding the key to the death of both Sir Charles and the maid. To uncover the truth, Lily must convince the father who doesn't trust or respect her to help catch his friend's killer before anyone else in the Wyatt household dies.

Lady detective Lily Adler is once again embroiled in a mystery when an old friend of her father‘s is found dead in his study. With old friends & new, Lily plans to unmask the killer & prove her father wrong.

I am really digging this series. The historical setting is really good, & I love the diversity of the cast. The mystery kept me guessing, & Lily‘s determination & cleverness have really won me over. Definitely putting a hold on 3! 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

This was delightful! What I really appreciated about this story was how well Lily handles both adversity and hunting down clues. Additionally, she has wonderful “partners in crime,“ so to speak, that she can rely on. I always adore team work when hunting down a villain and Lily has the best team. Also, after reading this story, I can say that I did not like Lily's father at all. I sincerely hope he does not surface again in this series, ha ha ha.

I really liked this second book in the series. I didn‘t really remember a lot of details from the first book, so took me a minute to remember who everyone was.

Yes, this was a good historical mystery. Unfortunately, it had nothing to do with the Doctor Who episode. 😝

Traci1 Haha! Doctor Who was the first thing I thought of from the title. 3y
TheSpineView Great job! 3y
Chrissyreadit This sounds so good! I love Dr. who, but that episode made me so sad! So I‘m glad it‘s not related. 3y

Enjoyed this one more than book 1, but I was able to easily guess the who and why quite quickly.

This is the 2nd in the Lily Adler historical mystery series, and I‘m happy to have another good female sleuth to keep up with. Lily and her intrepid friends help solve the murder of two in one household, one an old friend of her father‘s, the other a maid. While I had guessed most of it, there were still a few twists. Lily, as a young widow, is a strong, likable lead that I look forward to reading more about. 4.25/5⭐️

Bookzombie I may have asked this already but have you tried this series? This is 0.5, but I have read books 1 and 2 also and enjoyed them. 3y
robinb @BookishMarginalia Yay, I hope you‘ll enjoy! 😊 3y
robinb @Bookzombie I am embarrassed to admit this, but I actually own a few in that series and have yet to read one! 😱😱😱🙄😂 I think I bought them (as they were on Kindle sale) simply because I love Ashley Gardner‘s Captain Lacey series. Thanks for the mention though, I really need to get to them. 🥰 (edited) 3y
