This is great. I started this a while ago since she was speaking at a conference I went to last week. Her fiction is amazing. But her essays are also quite amazing. She's very into 1984, women's rights, the environment, and obviously books. She's also so freaking funny. Like snarky. With a heavy dose of sarcasm. I love her. 👑❤

Margaret Atwood is a true literary icon. This book of essays showcased her amazing intellect and wit. Many of the essays centered on conservation of our natural resources which got a bit repetitive but were impressive nonetheless. Her essays on Anne of Green Gables, Alice Munro and the story behind the touching poem “Dearly” that she wrote about her husband while he was still alive and suffering from dementia were some of the standout pieces.

Had to pause my own reading to read this for uni, and all I can say is get on it!

I‘ve never read Atwood before and found her writing clever and humorous. I‘ll be working through her back catalogue asap!

I could quote something on every page. This book is my jam! Let me set the connection, the coinky-dink: I‘ve just started A View of the Harbour by Elizabeth Taylor and a character is 20 yo, right after WWII, sitting in an upstairs room looking out the window at the town streets and then this book has this quote:
“Young Christine… Climbs up to the attic room where she has done so much reading and looks out the window.”

BkClubCare Hey @xicanti - this essay has many references to “Gabrielle Roy” (#TIL abt GR) 3y
xicanti @BkClubCare she was from here! I haven‘t read her yet, though. 3y
BkClubCare @xicanti - sounds like a buddy read of Bonheur d‘Occasion (The Tin Flute for this anglophone) 3y

“People‘s lives… We‘re dull, simple, amazing and unfathomable — deep caves paved with kitchen linoleum.“ The keyword here is unfathomable.

The above is from her essay on Alice Munro.

Munro is one of the authors on my “must-get-to” list. Who is on yours?

merelybookish That is one of my all-time favourite quotes! ❤️ 3y
BkClubCare @merelybookish oh, ty; just realized I didn‘t edit. All fixed! Simple, not symbol. The actual —, not the words “long dash”. 😅 3y
Ruthiella There are a bunch of fantasy writers I keep meaning to try but haven‘t yet succeeded in reading. I‘d say Joe Abercrombie is at the top of that list. 3y
BkClubCare @Ruthiella - 🙀 Never heard of him. 3y

An old proverb from India says, “ Forests 🌳 precede civilization; deserts 🏜 follow.”

(I‘m thinking it‘s a wonderful idea to capture all proverbs I encounter in my readings…)

and now, let‘s all go hug a tree.

IuliaC I will remember this one! 3y

I enjoy Atwood‘s fiction. She‘s always thought-provoking, wryly funny, and often brilliant. I just didn‘t LOVE this collection of speeches and essays on various topics. I think by structuring it chronologically and not thematically, it felt too random? And whilst I loved some essays, the collection as a whole felt too long and the content got repetitive. With so much in one collection, individual pieces lost their power in a sea of great writing.

Megabooks I think I‘ll pass. Thanks 👍🏻 3y

If you are an Atwood admirer, like myself, this is definitely worth a read. Over 60 essays/pieces full of wit and wisdom. I especially enjoyed her essay on Anne of Green Gables.

Addison_Reads I checked out this ebook through my library and started it, but after reading a few I decided to buy it for myself instead because I knew I'd want it for my shelves. Now I just need to plan a trip to the bookstore. 😁 3y

On my way to Waterstones. Contemplating the new Margaret Atwood... any other books I should keep my eyes peeled for while I'm there??

Branwen Ooooooh what did you get?!?! 😃💕📚 My vote would have been for The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea because that cover is too beautiful! Can't wait to see what you left with! 3y
