This was overall a so-so collection of horror stories. The one standout was “Challawa” by Usman Malik, which was excellent-which moved this up to a 3.5⭐️.

Dark Stars: New Tales of Darkest Horror edited by John F.D. Taff is an anthology of 12 tales that certainly have a certain vibe to them! This read was more like floating on a lazy river in the middle of the night. While you can‘t see what‘s coming around the next turn, you know that you will get there just as quickly as you were meant to.

🎧 I usually don‘t read short story collections as it‘s nearly always a mediocre mixed bag. This collection flips that assumption. It‘s more good than bad. Not terrifying but there‘s plenty to trigger here so beware.
The piggy one got me.

The last book of scary stories that I read was probably those directing children to tell them in the dark… Short fiction isn‘t something I typically gravitate towards, but this contained a few familiar and go-to authors so I was delighted when the publisher sent a copy my way! And there are a few here that will make you want to leave the lights on (looking at you-Kepnes, Jones, Taff, Malik and Langan)! I only wish some were longer! A fun read!

What are you reading? 😊
I love short fiction, and I love horror. This book is both! I have heard of and read most of the authors in this book, but some were new to me. It is always good to discover a new horror author.
Some of the stories were too slow moving for my taste. Although well written, I could have used a bit more action and actual horror. But with any collection of stories, some will resonate with you and some will not.
