Did You Hear What Eddie Gein Done?
Did You Hear What Eddie Gein Done? | Eric Powell, Harold Schechter
10 posts | 10 read | 16 to read
One of the greats in the field of true-crime literature, Harold Schechter (Deviant, The Serial Killer Files, Hell's Princess), teams with five-time Eisner Award-winning graphic novelist Eric Powell (The Goon, Big Man Plans, Hillbilly) to bring you the tale of one of the most notoriously deranged murderers in American history, Ed Gein. A Little Mad Sometimes is an in-depth exploration of the Gein family and what led to the creation of the necrophile who haunted the dreams of 1950s America and inspired such films as Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Silence of the Lambs. Painstakingly researched and illustrated, Schechter and Powell's true-crime graphic novel takes the Gein story out of the realms of exploitation and gives the reader a fact-based dramatization of these tragic, psychotic and heartbreaking events. Because, in this case, the truth needs no embellishment to be horrifying.

This is a graphic dramatization of the Ed Gein case – the one that inspired the character of Norman Bates in the book and movie Psycho and partially the character of Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs. I wasn't familiar with this case before and he was a sick f*ck indeed. I loved the style and illustrations of this book.

What an interesting and disturbing book. We all know who Ed Gein was, and generally his crimes. But this graphic novel is really well researched, and the art is good (and creepy!). Very much like My Friend Dahmer.

vivastory I thought it was very informative! 2y
Lauranahe It really was! I didn‘t know the specifics of his family at all. It was horrible. 2y

I had a review of this in mind but came here and saw that it was nearly identical to @jlhammar ‘s review! 🤣 From the growing up in Wisconsin and knowing the rough outlines of some famous WI murderer named Ed Gein to the learning of this book from @vivastory . 😄 My only review additions would be 1) I liked how they mixed primary source accounts and their own theories in the narrative and 2) maybe a few more “Eww!”s.

vivastory Lots of Ewws, indeed, I learned quite a bit from this one & I thought it was interesting that it opened with the premiere of Psycho. 2y
Christine @vivastory Yes re: Psycho! This book makes me want to read more nonfiction about the intersections of real crime (and/or the true crime genre) and horror. 2y
jlhammar Yes, great additions! Totally agree. 2y

Christine @jlhammar Of course I made the mistake of googling Ed Gein after reading and then the greater mistake of clicking on “Images.” 😱 2y
Christine @peaknit I didn‘t realize you worked in criminal justice! (I did briefly years ago and loved it.) I was a scaredy cat growing up so knew few details about Gein…I bet it was during the Dahmer publicity that I heard about him most. 2y
peaKnit @christine Yes, Dahmer resurfaced all of the things. The image of Gein‘s mother is blazed in my brain. I checked a book out about him in grade school and was hooked on killers ever since 🤦🏼‍♀️ I was an adult probation agent for almost 30 years, now I‘m at the Sex Offender Registry which sounds worse but it‘s better;) 2y
Christine @peaknit Wow re: your career! That's amazing - thanks for doing what you do (and LOL, I will take your word for that about the upgrade). Also wow re: the book fueling your lifelong interest! Just now realizing I failed to google pics of his mom...time to head back down the “Eww!“ rabbit hole, I guess! 2y

Well, that was disturbing! Really well done though. Growing-up in Northern WI I had heard of Ed Gein, but I didn‘t know the half of it. Gripping and well-researched with emotive and haunting artwork. You really get a sense of how the discovery of what Eddie Gein “done” rocked his small Wisconsin community and impacted American culture at large.

Thanks to @vivastory for putting this excellent true crime graphic novel on my radar!

I loved Schechter's Bloodlands collection, so when I saw this true crime gn about Gein written by Schechter, with artwork by Powell, it was an automatic checkout at the library. The book begins with the story behind the highly unusual making of & theatrical release & reception of Hitchcock's Psycho, what would be one of several influential movies that were based on Gein's crimes in one way or another. This book was very informative of Gein's

vivastory childhood & subsequent horrific crimes & the b & w artwork, clean & crisp with the occasional flourish, illustrated it well. This is a worthy entry into a small subgenre of graphic novels, right alongside Backderf's My Friend Dahmer & Jensen's Green River Killer.
Today is the beginning of my 4 day weekend. It is very satisfying knowing I am literally getting paid to have a beer & read, lol.

Christine Ooh, I'm going to check this out, esp. bc I grew up in Wisconsin. The title grabs me via feeling on-point re: the dialects of the region! (Though maybe “Didya“ or “Did Yous“ would feel even more right to me...but still. 😆) 2y
vivastory @Christine I could definitely see "Didya" I visited WI a few times while living in MN 2y

peaKnit I also grew up in WI and have visited Mendota Mental Health many time for professional reasons and thought, Ed was here! He used to wander away and be found at a local bar -at least that‘s the rumor:) 2y
The_Book_Ninja Timely review….I was looking to get this 2y

Deeply disturbing graphic novel/true crime story of the murderer who inspired Psycho, Texas Chain Saw Massacre & Silence of the Lambs. Very well done and a quick read. 4⭐️ Now onto something fluffy…

Eyelit @soubhi I was actually talking about behind the horror but now I need to add this to my stack! 2y
