Hotel Nantucket
Hotel Nantucket | Elin Hilderbrand

"The queen of beach reads" (New York Magazine) delivers another immensely satisfying page-turner in this tale about a summer of scandal at a storied Nantucket hotel. After a tragic fire in 1922 that killed 19-year-old chambermaid, Grace Hadley, The Hotel Nantucket descended from a gilded age gem to a mediocre budget-friendly lodge to inevitably an abandoned eyesore -- until it's purchased and renovated top to bottom by London billionaire, Xavier Darling. Xavier hires Nantucket sweetheart Lizbet Keaton as his general manager, and Lizbet, in turn, pulls together a charismatic, if inexperienced, staff who share the vision of turning the fate of the hotel around. They face challenges in getting along with one another (and with the guests), in overcoming the hotel's bad reputation, and in surviving the (mostly) harmless shenanigans of Grace Hadley herself -- who won't stop haunting the hotel until her murder is acknowledged. Filled with the emotional tension and multiple points of view that characterize Elin's books (The Blue Bistro, Golden Girl) as well as an added touch of historical reality, Hotel Nantucket offers something for everyone in this summer drama for the ages.

This book had a bit of everything I love. Mystery, scandal, a beautiful setting, likable characters, and even a ghost! It inspired me to visit Nantucket someday, where some of the establishments told of in the book actually exist. This story had a nice ending. This is the second book I‘ve read by this author. I intend to read more.

Book 18

A secretive owner buys and remodels the Hotel Nantucket, a rundown, allegedly haunted, island landmark, setting the staff to chasing a perfect review from an elusive, undercover hotel critic. The Hotel novel is a slow-burn that comes together satisfyingly-well. With time, the plethora of characters, including the ghost, become dynamic and endearing. I would read season two if Hilderbrand were to make it a series. 3.75 ⭐️s

This book is one of those books packed with characters going from one event or conflict to another without diving in too deep. The Pick rating is with the caveat that it is read on vacation.

Criticizing the plot of a Elin Hilderbrand novel is like being mean to a puppy. It‘s hard to do. You know what you get in her books - the ultimate beach read where you can put your brain on hold and just go with it. In this book the Hotel Nantucket is being renovated by a man with buckets of money. Lizbet Keaton is the general manager. Misunderstandings, romance, lies. Have fun. If you can‘t take a vacation this summer, your brain can.

I think it's time to give up on Elin Hilderbrand. Her last couple of books, for me, were so mundane. The characters are shallow, the storylines are predictable, and it feels like I'm reading the same book over and over again. Hotel Nantucket was no different, I'm not sure what the overall theme was supposed to be in this book, other than describing the lives of the people who run a hotel. And what was with all the parentheses??
