SAND. A hostile world of burning sun. Outlines of several once-busy cities shimmer on the horizon. Now empty of inhabitants, their buildings lie in ruins. In the distance a group of people - a family - walk towards us. Ahead lies shelter: a 'shuck' the family call home and which they know they must reach before the light fails, as to be out after dark is to invite danger and almost certain death. To survive in this alien world of shifting sand, they must find an object hidden in or near water. But other families want it too. And they are willing to fight to the death to make it theirs. It is beginning to rain in Fairfax County, Virginia when McKenzie Strathie wakes up. An ordinary teenage girl living an ordinary life - except that the previous night she found a sand-lizard in her bed, and now she's beginning to question everything around her, especially who she really is ... Two very different worlds featuring a group of extraordinary characters driven to the very limit of their endurance in a place where only the strongest will survive.

I loved it- thought the characters and the story was great. But I‘m still no nearer actually figuring out the other world- SF, fantasy, dystopian 🤷‍♀️ not a clue. But really enjoyed it.

I‘m such a sucker for these special editions. Stop with the stickers though!

KristiAhlers Ugh I hate those stickers! And sometimes you can remove them as they start to tear the paper of the cover 🙄 2y
charl08 Down with stickers. 2y
Libby1 Sorry. I work at Waterstones. We hate the stickers, too! 2y

Suet624 That‘s really groovy. Except for the stickers. 2y
squirrelbrain Love those 🦎! 2y
DivineDiana Love the detail not those stickers! 2y
Bookwomble @Libby1 Asking for a friend: If I ... I mean my friend ... were to ask a Waterstones' bookseller to remove the stickers from a book on the proviso that I - He! - would buy it if the cover was intact afterwards, would they do that for me - Him!? 😐 2y
Libby1 @Bookwomble I would! Just part of the service. The other day I had someone buy a birthday card and ask me to write the message in it for them. I did. 😀 2y
Bookwomble @Libby1 Thanks, I'll let my friend know what helpful staff you have 😁 2y
BarbaraBB Great question @Bookwomble and I love your kindness @Libby1 🤍 2y
TrishB @Libby1 😘 I can well understand you wouldn‘t like them! 2y
TrishB @KristiAhlers @charl08 @Suet624 @DivineDiana the stickers are successfully removed 😁 2y
KristiAhlers Yay about the stickers. Now go enjoy that pretty book! 2y
Cathythoughts Fabulous ♥️ 2y
julesG You'll have to have a special 'special editions' showcase. 2y
TrishB @julesG now there‘s an idea. 2y
charl08 💪Impressive work. Sad numbers of my books have sticker ghosts... 😭 2y
Twainy I got this book last year from Goldsboro & really want to read it! Nice stenciled edges! 2y
TrishB @charl08 they‘re really annoying! 2y
TrishB @Twainy I‘m enjoying so far! And I love the edges. 2y

Mehso-so

Somewhere classified between 'speculative fiction' and Science fiction,' this is an interesting but tediously a long book. Unfortunately, the author, Theo Clare, aka Mo Hayder, is no more. But her gritty novel proves that she is a great British Crime writer.

When I first started reading this, I wasn't sure what to expect. The book has dual storylines, which start off separately but slowly start to merge. I found it a gripping read that easily held my attention. I thought the ending was the weakest part, but the preceding chapters were strong so I rate this 4🌟

TW: animal death, violence.

My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Random House UK, Cornerstone, Century, for the opportunity to read an ARC.
