One of Buzzfeed's Most Anticipated LGBTQ Reads of 2022! Joy is in love with Malcolm. But Malcolm really likes Summer. Summer is in love with love. And Fox is Summer's ex-boyfriend. Thirty, flirty, and asexual Joy is secretly in love with her best friend Malcolm, but she's never been brave enough to say so. When he unexpectedly announces that he's met the love of his life--and no, it's not Joy--she's heartbroken. Malcolm invites her on a weekend getaway, and Joy decides it's her last chance to show him exactly what he's overlooking. But maybe Joy is the one missing something...or someone...and his name is Fox. Fox sees a kindred spirit in Joy--and decides to help her. He proposes they pretend to fall for each other on the weekend trip to make Malcolm jealous. But spending time with Fox shows Joy what it's like to not be the third wheel, and there's no mistaking the way he makes her feel. Could Fox be the romantic partner she's always deserved?

Sweet and cute story focused on not one but TWO assexual people. Kann does a great job at kinda explaining things without making it sound like an explanation- the characters are rly likable and while this book keeps it real (life and relationships and self discovery are HARD!), it still feels light and enjoyable 💗

Very mixed feelings. The plot was mediocre. Character explained her asexuality well throughout. Like how she wasn‘t questioned about it. It made up few huge points in the plot. Yet didn‘t seem to change this obsession. Maybe it‘s because I identify as ace, and I know everyone does different, but this didn‘t sit well. By the end it caught up a bit more. The early book obsession ends by obsessing over someone else? Nah. #lgbtqa

I think this book was incredibly descriptive of its surroundings and uses music in really interesting ways. What did you think? Did anywhere or any song jump out you in particular?

Relations of all kinds play a really important role in this book. Were there any relationships that stood out for you? Why? Are there any relationships you wish could have been explored more?

#LGBTbookclub

BookmarkTavern I think what I appreciated most, was the friendship between Joy and Malcolm. Yes they came to acknowledge they were maybe a little too dependent on each other, but the narrative never said that a friendship was a less worthy type of relationship than a romantic one. 11mo
BookmarkTavern And watching Summer and Malcolm from the sidelines was actually really cute as we got to learn just how much their values and goals lined up with each other. 11mo
AbigailJaneBlog I LOVED Joy and Malcolm's friendship. I have some similar (albeit less dysfunctional) relationships and it really soothed me to see something similar written down 11mo

APRIL DISCUSSION

Kann makes a big point within TRA to differentiate between romance and sex. How did you feel about this? Did you learn anything? How would you say this difference impacts our lives?

#LGBTbookclub

BookmarkTavern As an ace myself, it was so cool seeing Joy explain how she felt and not having the people around her tell her she was broken or cold. Seeing her so joyful in her own body and experiences was a delight. 11mo
AbigailJaneBlog @ozma.of.oz I'm on that particular spectrum too and I loved it also! I was so thrilled when they had the conversation over the movie. I'm much more like Malcolm personally, so I really, really enjoyed living through Joy's pov 11mo

I enjoyed this more than I expected, since I usually avoid books with a love triangle. But it was the pick for #lgbtbookclub and I'm glad I gave it a shot. I liked that while Joy and Malcolm were both ace, they had different expectations and experiences when it came to relationships and love. And Joy's budding friendship with Fox was very cute, their honesty and communication was refreshing. Overall this was a fun summery read!

In love with her best friend for years, Joy takes advantage of a group trip to fake date a new acquaintance & show her friend what he‘s missing. But maybe she‘ll find something for herself instead.

A cute, fast romance. I liked having an ace main character who also deals with anxiety, the ending pleasantly surprised me. But something about the tone just didn‘t vibe with me, & I am not a fan of miscommunication to cause drama. 🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑

AbigailJaneBlog I usually hate miscommunication but I actually LOVED this book, I think because it actually ended up being quite healthy in the end? 12mo
BookmarkTavern @AbigailJaneBlog Yeah, I was actually pretty pleased with the ending! 12mo

BookmarkTavern Woo! 🎉 12mo
willaful I just decided not to continue the audiobook because frankly, I don't understand it. Nothing seems to follow from one scene to the next. Might be a me problem so I'm switching to print. 12mo
AbigailJaneBlog @willaful I had quite a few problems with this book at the beginning, but that actually wasn't one of them so perhaps it's the audio. I did find the beginning a little lacking and under developed so could be that I guess? 12mo

I was looking forward to having an Ace main character, but I'm bailing on this book already. I just absolutely hate it. I'll have to join in on the #LGBTBookClub fun next month! #LGBTQ

TieDyeDude Hard to find a good Ace character sometimes. I just learned about the tagged book. Have you heard of it? 12mo
Kenyazero @TieDyeDude It really is! I think I've only read 2-3 books with explicitly ace characters, one of which I discovered by coincidence. I've heard of that book, but not in the context of ace characters. It looks like an intriguing read! 12mo

Soft pick. I am normally more of a romcom watcher than a reader. I enjoyed the storytelling, I am a fan of fake dating tropes, and love triangles so this was good.
I didn't enjoy the writing so much. There are a few times we switch from third to first person narrator which annoyed me. And there are some timeline issues that probably most readers will not catch but which were totally distractions for me.

Okay but what if you took the vibes of My Best Friend's Wedding except made it a weird four friends getaway and the two not dating each other decide to fake date to see if that helps their friends realize they are not meant to be except the fake dating results in a delightful grumpy sunshine pairing? Also, like obviously the person who love your pins is the right person.

TaraTLK Puns not pins. Darn you, autocorrect. 2y
