Not much can be added that hasn‘t already been said about the horrors of the Holocaust. This is a great read that gives a fascinating and unique perspective. A Jewish doctor and assistant to Josef Mengele gives his eye witness account. A wonderfully written and heart breaking story of a man‘s fight to survive.

I imagine when this book was originally published, in 1960, it was quite shocking. It still is, but I‘ve read so much about the Holocaust, that there wasn‘t a lot new, though there was some. I feel badly that I‘m not rating it higher. I didn‘t feel as much of an emotional connection (usually) as I thought I might. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin I‘m not sure if it was written in a more detached way; both as a doctor and just trying to force himself to get through it all to survive, I‘m sure he had to do his best to try to detach. He did say at the start of the book that he is a doctor, not a writer, so maybe that was part of it, as well (though it was definitely ‚Äúreadable‚ÄĚ). Still, a worthwhile read, for sure. 1y

Nyiszli was taken to Auschwitz in 1944 and worked as a doctor under Joseph Mengele. It‘s the most heartbreaking #memoir I‘ve ever read. It‘s a difficult read but an important one. #maylovesclassics #litsyclassics

Nothing is scarier to me than the fact that something on this scale actually happened with such cold efficiency by people convinced they were right. #AllHallowsRead #ScaryRead #scarynonfiction

BooksRockMyWorld This was a deeply disturbing book, but one of those that I needed to read... :( 3y
