In this brilliant new novel by from Emiko Jean, the author of the New York Times bestselling young adult novel Tokyo Ever After, comes a whip-smart, laugh-out-loud funny, and utterly heartwarming novel about motherhood, daughterhood, and love--how we find it, keep it, and how it always returns. One phone call changes everything. At thirty-five, Mika Suzuki's life is a mess. Her last relationship ended in flames. Her roommate-slash-best friend might be a hoarder. She's a perpetual disappointment to her traditional Japanese parents. And, most recently, she's been fired from her latest dead-end job. Mika is at her lowest point when she receives a phone call from Penny--the daughter she placed for adoption sixteen years ago. Penny is determined to forge a relationship with her birth mother, and in turn, Mika longs to be someone Penny is proud of. Faced with her own inadequacies, Mika embellishes a fact about her life. What starts as a tiny white lie slowly snowballs into a fully-fledged fake life, one where Mika is mature, put-together, successful in love and her career. The details of Mika's life might be an illusion, but everything she shares with curious, headstrong Penny is real: her hopes, dreams, flaws, and Japanese heritage. The harder-won heart belongs to Thomas Calvin, Penny's adoptive widower father. What starts as a rocky, contentious relationship slowly blossoms into a friendship and, over time, something more. But can Mika really have it all--love, her daughter, the life she's always wanted? Or will Mika's deceptions ultimately catch up to her? In the end, Mika must face the truth--about herself, her family, and her past--and answer the question, just who is Mika in real life? Perfect for fans of Kiley Reid's Such a Fun Age, Gail Honeyman's Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, and Rebecca Serle's In Five Years, Mika in Real Life is at once a heart-wrenching and uplifting novel that explores the weight of silence, the secrets we keep, and what it means to be a mother.

October 12, 2023 About to start Chapter Nine of this book. I feel like when I read books written by people of color, it is more relatable. People of color have different stories to tell ( personal, historical, or biographical ) and I am HERE FOR IT! Being able to find a book that I can personally relate to ( sort of ) is very freeing. I think to myself, "Wow, this is something that I will remember and always cherish."

This was an entertaining and quirky story with very deep underlying themes surrounding motherhood and parenthood in general. It really makes you think about the very complex mother daughter relationship but in sweet way. Chick flick style teardrops for me at the end 💧

2/5 ⭐

In my opinion, the book felt flat. It was okay but I didn't care much about the story.

This one was a quick read. I finished it in two days and I couldn‘t put it down. I really liked it. I found myself rooting for Mika and her success and there were a few times my heart broke for her. I definitely want to read more from this author!

I really liked the Tokyo Ever After series by this author but I was disappointed in this one. It read like a Jennifer Weiner knockoff, with serious storylines mixed in with a ridiculous one (creating a fake life to impress a daughter who had been adopted). I finished it but I didn‘t really like it. The friendship between Mika and her best friend was my favorite part.

Megabooks I liked Mika‘s bff more than Mika! 2y

Panpan

Other than a HS girl attending an elite summer running camp in Oregon, I found nothing here credible. I could go on and on about plot points I saw as significant fails, but I‘ll just mention two in a spoiler comment. I wish I could at least give this a so-so, but it has to be a pan from me. ↓

marleed My oldest sister gave a child up for adoption who came back into her life at 15 yrs, and there are zero similarities to this fiction. I can‘t even suspend disbelief for a second to consider a biological mother would fake a life so the child she gave up would believe their biological mother‘s life turned out fantastic in that aftermath - especially with the help of a disliked bf. There‘s also a poorly considered rape unnecessary to the plot. 2y
Bookwomble Sounds awful 😒 2y
marleed @Bookwomble I don‘t pan a book often as most of what I read at least garners a so-so rating, but her take on too many topics frustrated me. Even the MCs relationship with her own mother poorly unfolded. 2y

LiteraryinPA Sounds like a nope to me. 2y
Bookwomble @marleed Ugh, it gets worse! 😜 2y
marleed @LiteraryinLawrence @Bookwomble Haha. I‘m m reminded of some IRL bookclubs where meaningful discussions sometimes flip my view of a book - either favorable on unfavorable. But alas, I think on this one I might be the one flipping views to the dark side. 2y
Bookwomble @marleed Sounds like you'll be flipping it something! 😆 2y

Bailedbailed

All this book has made me feel is annoyed, and I can‘t take it anymore. The characters are flat, the audiobook narrator sounds whiny to me, and I can‘t make it another 6 hours. #BailCity

Cinfhen Ohhhhh… good to know 😅 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I just couldn‘t connect with this one. I stopped after about 4 hours and read a whole different book then came back and was like no…just no. 2y
Cinfhen You gave it a fair chance/ it‘s good to know when to bail 2y

#wondrouswednesday @Eggs great prompt!!

1* stacked the tagged book based on the review by @KristiAhlers ?

2* August has been a slumpy reading month, several books abandoned out of lack of interest ? now I‘m into two interesting books: Everything Must Go by Camille Pagán on audio ( @Cinfhen ??) and The Other Benett Sister by Janice Hadlow. Both well written and engaging!

3* Nepal??

Southern coast of Crete ??

I received this novel in a Goodreads giveaway, and I was blown away. This book made me laugh and cry and really connect with all the characters. It‘s a really great narration of motherhood, adoption, sexual assault, and immigration. Highly recommend!
