A short illustrated version of short stories. Creepy but not as spooky as I'd hoped. Good if you want a quick read though. 3*

This is my second time reading this book. The stories are sparse and straightforward, but that's what I enjoy about them. The endings are vague, but that's okay. I miss the subtlety of horror in modern fiction. I also appreciate the sense of a genteel and orderly world being unsettled. In a messed up planet, it's nice escapism. I would recommend viewing the BBC adaptations that were a staple at Christmas. Many are free on YouTube. 😊

Just want I wanted! 🖤 8 stories that are humorous, grisly, and chilling. All of them are told at 2nd or 3rd hand, allowing enough distance to wink about the main characters who are usually bookish bachelors, curious but heedless, and play way too much golf. Their studious inclinations lead them into trouble, sometimes doom. And the threat is nothing so obvious as a tapestried gothic chamber. In these stories, ANYTHING can be haunted. 👻

Reggie I‘m curious as to what the anything could be. Stacked. 4y

Anyone recognize this? The last story in the collection has to do with a stained glass puzzle and it makes me think of this video game I just watched my partner play.

Reggie What is it? Or who is it? And what game is it? 4y
Michael_Gee @Reggie I thought for sure you would know! Resident Evil. Do you play any of those? 4y
Reggie I‘m a one game type of guy. I play League of Legends and have been for 6-7 years. It‘s ridiculous really. I even went to go see some pro teams battle it out at a spring split championship in Las Vegas back in 2016. We just finished worlds this year at the end of October. My pic is the pic of the character I play the most. Her name is Zyra. Lol it‘s a bit much. Short answer no, no Resident Evil though I liked the 1st movie. Did you and your partner 4y
Reggie get scared. I hear there‘s a lot of jump scares in the game. (edited) 4y
Michael_Gee @Reggie I‘m so fascinated now. I don‘t really know LoL but I looked up Zyra (I‘ve long wondered what your pic was!). Sort of an elusive Poison Ivy? Like a weed, with a strong urge to colonize? As for Resident Evil: The old game, which this pic is from, wasn‘t very scary, but Resident Evil 2 which he just started is like watching a horror movie. Very jumpy! Both are fun to watch. 😄 4y

December is for ghost stories! I‘m loving this collection (⬆️ is the background of my tablet. I‘m reading from Project Gutenberg). I enjoy that they can be cheeky, grisly, and chilling at the same time. And such fun to read aloud! “Parkins pondered.” “A very bright frosty moon.” Isn‘t that fun? 👻

Reggie Lol, indeed. 4y
twohectobooks I have yet to read any MR James stories and I think I‘m missing out! 4y
Michael_Gee @Reggie You get it! 4y
Michael_Gee @twohectobooks You may be! I feel I was. I‘d read a few in the last couple years but I‘m enjoying retreading them in the context of the collection. They‘re free! It‘s December! They‘re short! They‘re free! 4y

“The ceiling was flat, and had been adorned by a seventeenth-century artist with a strange and hideous 'Last Judgement', full of lurid flames, falling cities, burning ships, crying souls, and brown and smiling demons.”

An ok collection of ghost stories. I think I'd enjoy some of James's longer works. These were a little too short to get interested in too much.

So creepy! My fave stories were "The Mezzotint" and "Oh, Whistle and I'll Come to You, My Lad". Would love to re-read these sometime.

SusanInTiburon Oh, Whistle is a classic! 🙀 7y
rabbitprincess @SusanInTiburon I heard there was a TV version with John Hurt! That would be creepy to watch! 7y
Vypa There's many adaptations of James' work, mostly in the 70s/80s bit recently Mark Gatiss is doing great things q 2y
