In this lush, romantic epic fantasy series from a New York Times bestselling author, a young woman's secret power to raise the dead plunges her into the dangerous and glamorous world of the Sainted King's royal court. When Lore was thirteen, she escaped a cult in the catacombs beneath the city of Dellaire. And in the ten years since, she's lived by one rule: don't let them find you. Easier said than done, when her death magic ties her to the city. Mortem, the magic born from death, is a high-priced and illicit commodity in Dellaire, and Lore's job running poisons keeps her in food, shelter, and relative security. But when a run goes wrong and Lore's power is revealed, she's taken by the Presque Mort, a group of warrior-monks sanctioned to use Mortem working for the Sainted King. Lore fully expects a pyre, but King August has a different plan. Entire villages on the outskirts of the country have been dying overnight, seemingly at random. Lore can either use her magic to find out what's happening and who in the King's court is responsible, or die. Lore is thrust into the Sainted King's glittering court, where no one can be believed and even fewer can be trusted. Guarded by Gabriel, a duke-turned-monk, and continually running up against Bastian, August's ne'er-do-well heir, Lore tangles in politics, religion, and forbidden romance as she attempts to navigate a debauched and opulent society. But the life she left behind in the catacombs is catching up with her. And even as Lore makes her way through the Sainted court above, they might be drawing closer than she thinks.

I liked this book. The magic system and necromancy were something I've never read about before!
There is a minor love triangle, I don't love those, but it was not a huge part of the story. I really liked Lore and Bastien, Gabe was a bit annoying.
There were so many twists that I wasn't sure who was going to end up being the villain. It did end up being a couple of my guesses.
I am very intrigued by this story, and I can't wait to start book two.

This was fantastic! The world building, magic system, atmosphere, and characters were all spot on for me. Hannah Whitten has certainly become a favourite, and I can't wait to pick up the next one.

My initial reaction was "wait, is this a fantasy novel about drug dealers," but by 80% I was actually really enjoying myself. This is a fun world to spend 500 or so pages in and I will def return for the sequel.

Ugh! Here‘s the deal… did I kind of hate the ending? Yes. But did I preorder book 2? Also a resounding yes.
I am obsessed with the world building and it definitely had twists I didn‘t see coming. If you love political world building then this is absolutely a book for you. If there was one more element to it, it would be a massive pick. Hopefully I get it in the next book.

4 ⭐Lore grew up on the catacombs under the city. A catacomb inhabited by a cult. Now she runs poisons to keep a roof over her head and food in her belly. But Lore has a special ability. She can channel Mortem…Death Magic. But after an accident brings her powers to light of others she is taken by the Presque Mort to help figure out what is killing the villagers of outlying cities.

LibrarianRyan The Presque Mort is a group a special monks, and Gabriel is both her jailer and her accomplice in this task. But there is also Basition, heir to the Sainted King and ruler of the land, who is not exactly what the city things he is.

I was thoroughly engrossed in this book and was so disappointed when my audiobook ended, because it ended in the middle of a sentence. It turns out that my audiobook was 3 HOURS SHORT!!!!

LibrarianRyan @peanutnine yeah. It won‘t give anything away but my copy ended with the characters going down. That‘s all I know!!! I‘m going to get a copy and read it. None of the libraries had an audio copy 13mo

I read this in one sitting because I was intrigued by the magic system and it didn't require much heavy lifting in the focus department. I found the main characters likeable despite their faults and the love triangle didn't really annoy me as much as it could have.

DNF‘d at 50%
This had a strong start and some interesting world building, but then it became a very predictable love triangle situation and got very boring. Another book that could use some editing down. Though an adult release, this feels very YA/New Adult.

4/5

The gods of Dellaire are dead and their bodies leak magic into the world. Lore can manipulate Mortem the death magic left by Nyxara, but eventually her gifts take her from the streets of Dellaire into the court itself.

I always enjoy fantasy that has an interesting religious system, especially one that involves magic, and I loved the mysteries presented by this book.

I have a new favorite author to add to my fantasy author must-read list! This book is (first in a series...so YAY) and the world-building and characters sucked me in! I couldn't sleep last night so I decided to start a new book. Yeah, had to force myself to put it down and I was up early to dig right back in. Lore is an amazing character! #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

RaeLovesToRead Thank you, Chaplin!!! There's another book called Foxglove out this year. I do hope this isn't going to jump-start a foxglove fad, with enormous foxglove-themed displays in Waterstones 😅😅 2y

I‘ve seen mixed reviews of this one but honestly, once it really got going I found it hard to put down. A little angsty, but not TOO angsty, an interesting world with an intriguing magic system, recognizable but nonetheless entertaining characters & the promise of more. Marketed as adult, it often read as YA which I didn‘t really have a problem with. I do hope the narrow focus of this book expands in the second giving us a wider view of the world.

Overcast, grey, windy day with the promise/threat/tease of precipitation of one sort or another (I vote for snow, not rain) once again has put me in the mood for a fantasy…with a cup of hot tea. So I‘m going to start one of this week‘s new releases. It‘s off to a promising start.

KristiAhlers Oh your copy is so pretty! Ours is Black and white and gray in color. 2y
