Pickpick

Just like nearly every other Bujold book I‘ve read, this was a delight from the beginning to the end. My only disappointment is that none of the characters from Paladin of Souls appeared, even in cameos! But Ingrey, Ijada, Learned Hallana, Learned Oswin, Prince Jokol, and the rest made up for it. I‘d love to read a companion book about Jokol, Breiga, and their brave young divine!

Clare-Dragonfly P. S. @TheAromaofBooks This was my January #bookspin! 4y

Here‘s my #bookspin list for February! Only two things came off the list from last month… I still plan to read the tagged book, which is my January spin, but I figure I may as well get #bookspinbingo credit for it if I finish it this month. Or if it‘s this month‘s pick again that‘s OK too 😉

Here‘s my #bookspinbingo board for January! I‘m eyeing that middle column… the official #bookspin, a book I‘ve already started for #newyearwhodis, and TWO free spaces make it a relatively doable target!

P.S. Don‘t mind the white-out lines. I thought I could draw the board in pen without marking it out in pencil first 😅

Kangaj1 I loved The Flatshare! 4y

Signs of the Bastard‘s holy presence tend to be unmistakable ... the screaming, the altercations, the people running in circles...
*love* Bujold‘s writing 🤣. Do you suspect this might be the favourite of her 5 gods?

humouress Continuing on: I wouldn‘t say I snorted a laugh because that would be inelegant. But I love the humour threaded through this book (even/ especially if it‘s occasionally dark). ETA: just discovered a secret power. Personally, I would be terrified if I knew such existed but our hero takes it all in his stride. (edited) 4y

Gesca let his voice lilt upward into a feminine falsetto - ‘the lady thinks your smile is *devastating.*‘

Just started this and finding its mood autumnal for some reason. Maybe it‘s the title or the cover illustration but it‘s slow (in a good way) and rich. This is the third book in the ‘Chalion‘ series (set in the same world of Five Gods but so far no common characters) and the only one I haven‘t read yet so I am savouring it. Waiting for the ‘Penric‘ books to come out in print.

humouress mmpbs ... Penric's Progress and Penric's Travels, which collect, in chronological order, the first six Penric & Desdemona novellas. They are both now just out in hardcover ... mmpbs usually follow in about a year. Should I write a 9th novella or equivalent word count, there could be a third paper collection, but that won't be happening soon.(e-mail from LMB to me) 4y

The writing's not as deft as Bujold and the intro and outro are both a little clunky, but then I'm being overly particular because this one is oh, such fun in the middle, and the details are incredible.

booklahoma @esurient I read the Vorkosigan books many, many years ago but was probably too young to truly appreciate anything more than the space battles. I haven't read any other Bujold, but even without any context I still enjoyed the fan story that you linked. 😀 (edited) 6y
esurient @booklahoma I'm so very glad! It's a personal enjoyment of mine to find a fan writer skilled enough at their work that even those unfamiliar with the originating material can enjoy the result. This Chalion saga, loosely a series, is my favorite of Bujold's works. 6y

If you want a fast-moving easy read, do not read the book. If you are in the mood to finish a brilliant political/spirit animal/theological heavy/royal court fantasy murder mystery with the most hilarious scene that includes an Ice Bear, you should read this book. #hugoaward

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Part of a series or no? 6y
AiBBot Yup. @TobeyTheScavengerMonk She won Best Series at the Hugo 2018 with World of Five Gods Series. It was a great. This was the last one of the Series. 6y

I listened to about an hour of this and just couldn't get into it. Is it the narrator? Is it the story? Is it my mood? 🤷

Maybe I'll try again one day.

SW-T I read it and liked it well enough. However, don‘t think I could listen. I can listen to mysteries and comedies and enjoy them. Other genres I have to read to enjoy for whatever reason. 🤔 6y
abbielistenstobooks @SW-T that's interesting! For me, I think it's only some narrators' styles. I listen to most of the books I read. I only read-read when I can't get it on audio from the library! 6y
SW-T @abbielistenstobooks The narrator makes a difference! I love the narrators for Agatha Raisin and the Ladies Detective Agency. 6y

There never was a golden age. It was always only iron.
The gods have no hands in this world but ours. If we fail Them, where then can They turn?

marie3blue I'm listening to the audiobook, so instead of just posting a screen shot of Overdrive I just picked a picture on my camera roll that I like and felt fit the tone. :) This book is the third in Bujold's books about the world of the five gods. The first is The Curse of Chalion. 8y
Bookrarian I absolutely loved The Curse of Chalion, but somehow never read the next two! I need to pick this up. 8y
marie3blue @Bookrarian I thought "Paladin of Souls" was even better than the first (it even won a Hugo and Nebula) Gotta get your hands on that one, maybe re-read Curse first if it's been a while. I love Bujold! :) 8y
