Democracy Awakening
Democracy Awakening: Notes on the State of America | Heather Cox RICHARDSON
10 posts | 6 read | 1 reading | 10 to read
From historian and author of the popular daily newsletter LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN, a vital narrative that explains how America, once a beacon of democracy, now teeters on the brink of autocracy -- and how we can turn back. In the midst of the impeachment crisis of 2019, Heather Cox Richardson launched a daily Facebook essay providing the historical background of the daily torrent of news. It soon turned into a newsletter and its readership ballooned to more than 2 million dedicated readers who rely on her plainspoken and informed take on the present and past in America. In Democracy Awakening, Richardson crafts a compelling and original narrative, explaining how, over the decades, a small group of wealthy people have made war on American ideals. By weaponizing language and promoting false history they have led us into authoritarianism -- creating a disaffected population and then promising to recreate an imagined past where those people could feel important again. She argues that taking our country back starts by remembering the elements of the nations true history that marginalized Americans have always upheld. Their dedication to the principles on which this nation was founded has enabled us to renew and expand our commitment to democracy in the past. Richardson sees this history as a roadmap for the nations future. Richardsons talent is to wrangle our giant, meandering, and confusing news feed into a coherent story that singles out what we should pay attention to, what the precedents are, and what possible paths lie ahead. In her trademark calm prose, she is realistic and optimistic about the future of democracy. Her command of history allows her to pivot effortlessly from the Founders to the abolitionists to Reconstruction to Goldwater to Mitch McConnell, highlighting the political legacies of the New Deal, the lingering fears of socialism, the death of the liberal consensus and birth of movement conservatism. Many books tell us what has happened over the last five years. Democracy Awakening explains how we got to this perilous point, what our history really tells us about ourselves, and what the future of democracy can be.

This is a great read as the US elections get underway. This book brings to light the foundations America was built on and how we got to where we are today. It was like a crash course in government. Curious what parts of this my book club will want to bring up to discuss next week. 😬

TheBookHippie I love her insight. I read her every morning. 1mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was excellent . I expected it to be sort of “rah rah—if we all get out the vote it will all be fine” but instead it was a history of our uniquely American history and flirtations with and reactions to facism. I was familiar with a lot of the discrete bits of history but she connected things in ways I hadn‘t before. Highly recommend.

If you follow HCR‘s Letters from an American a lot of this will be familiar, and the last 1/4 or so repeats some of the first half (as well as some of HCR‘s previous book, tagged below); but this is still an amazing book and everyone should read it. How we got into this political mess and why it all matters.

ravenlee There‘s a good bit of repeated material from this book, but it‘s important information, so I can forgive it. 2mo

Starting this today (or trying to) while #DannyBoy wants very much to have ALL THE SNUGGLES and kiddo fights off a cold. I‘ve fallen behind on reviews again, and will get around to them…eventually.

Re-posting my book+sock pic because I like it so much—and because I forgot to take a picture before the book went back to the library.😆

I‘m conflicted about how to rate this. I went in with super-high expectations because of how much I get out of HCR‘s daily “Letters from an American.” But because I‘ve been following those daily letters, the content here—especially the middle section focusing on the Trump years—didn‘t have much that was new.⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) But just because it wasn‘t new content to me, doesn‘t mean it wasn‘t good. The other issue I had is that in focusing on the trajectory of the Republican Party—tracing the roots of the past few years back through U.S. history—at times, the book feels like it lacks the nuance that I think is necessary in engaging with politics and current issues. Everything is complicated, and I wanted more acknowledgment of that here—but ⤵️ (edited) 5mo
Chelsea.Poole Your socks! 🙌 😆 5mo
BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) …that‘s a bit outside the scope of what HCR is doing. It‘s not exactly fair to fault the book for not doing something it didn‘t set out to do. HCR does a fantastic job of reflecting on the current state of the U.S. & how we got here (and it‘s startling to see the chaos of the Trump years on the page). I‘d recommend this as a clear, concise summary of the historical roots of our current political moment—with a dash of hope for the future. (edited) 5mo
BarbaraJean @Chelsea.Poole I have the matching t-shirt and tote bag as well 😆 5mo

HCR speed signing books after flight delays had her rushing to her talk at the LBJ Library in Austin tonight. My friend and I really enjoyed the event.

I picked this up from the library yesterday and am really excited to dive in. Heather Cox Richardson‘s daily “Letters from an American” have been providing a much needed dose of sanity, clarity, and hope for me (and so many others!) over the past few years. She takes current news and places it in perspective, using historical context. I‘m really looking forward to reading her take on the present and future state of our nation.

HCR just announced the mid-September release of her new book! I‘ve had her previous book for…um, a while…and will definitely get to it one of these days, but I‘m even more excited about this one. She says it is about how the last years have made her reconceive the meaning of history.

Suet624 I love her. She‘s kept me sane for years now. 12mo
