Tessa is a young, brilliant barrister. She has worked her way up from working-class origins to the top of her game: defending, cross-examining and winning. But an unexpected event forces her to confront the patriarchal power of the law, where the burden of proof and morality diverge. Prima Facie by Suzie Miller is an award-winning play for a solo actor, taking us deep into a world where emotion and integrity are in conflict with the rules of the game. After several acclaimed productions in Australia and winning the Australian Writers' Guild Award for Drama, the play received its European premiere at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London's West End in April 2022. It was produced by Empire Street Productions, directed by Justin Martin, and starred Jodie Comer, the Emmy and Bafta Award-winning star of TV's Killing Eve, making her West End debut.

I read this novel two days after the election & it was powerful enough to momentarily keep my mind off of my despair. Sadly, it highlights a different illness of a culture that doesn‘t honor or believe women when it comes to reporting a rape. A successful attorney moving up in the court system finds herself on the other side of the bar, attempting to hold her rapist accountable. This story was first a play & the novel expands the story. Brilliant.

BarbaraBB What a book, right? I read the play and was blown away ❤️‍🩹 5d
Suet624 @BarbaraBB thanks for encouraging me to read it. 5d

Suet624 @sarahbarnes Just so you know, Barbara and I agree 95% on books. 😊 I haven‘t read the play and I think that might pack even more of a wallop. (edited) 5d
BarbaraBB I was sure you‘d love it 🩷 and am sure too that you will @sarahbarnes ! 5d
HardcoverHearts I did the audiobook and it was read by the actress who had the role in the stage play, Jodie Comer. She was fantastic. 5d

A brilliant and extremely painful book that touches me deeply. It‘s short, it‘s a play for a solo actor.
It‘s the story of Tessa, a successful barrister who is one day confronted with the patriarchal power of the law.
I can‘t believe law still works like that. And I do believe Tessa‘s story. Every man should read this book or see this play.

TW: rape

squirrelbrain I‘m glad it had such an impact on you - it‘s up there with my best books of the year. 1mo

#WeeklyForecast 42/23

I am reading Keep it in the Family, which is super scary. Next will be the tagged, of which I‘ve heard such good things. Only I think I maybe grabbed the wrong version, as this is not the novel but the play?
Last but not least a Salman Rushdie, who I haven‘t read for years even though he used to be my favorite author.

MrsMalaprop Saw the play performed recently. It was 🔥. And yes there is a book and play version. 1mo
BarbaraBB @MrsMalaprop Thanks for clearing that up. I hope the play is as good as the novel 🤞🏽 1mo
squirrelbrain The play is the original version - the novel came later. 1mo

This isn‘t published until 14th March in the UK but @MicheleinPhilly convinced me to read it out of #netgalley date order, and I‘m so glad she did.

I knew the premise before I started and I was breathless for the first part, waiting for ‘the thing‘ to happen, and then devoured the second part, wishing for a conclusion but not wanting it to end. And I cried at the end too.

I wish I‘d seen the play with Jodie Comer…

MicheleinPhilly Damn, it looks like the NT @ Home video got pulled from YouTube. 😕 9mo
squirrelbrain I‘d forgotten about that @MicheleinPhilly - but too late now anyway. 🙄 9mo
Kitta The play with Jodie Comer was fantastic, so hard hitting I cried. I don‘t know if I could read it, books always hit me harder 9mo

CarolynM I saw it on stage. Not Jodie Comer but still excellent. Don‘t think I could face reading it, although I‘m interested in how it‘s been adapted to deal with the place specific-ness of the play. 9mo
Cathythoughts Great review!! Stacking 👍🏻♥️ 9mo
squirrelbrain @Kitta @CarolynM - I‘m very jealous of both of you. @kitta - @micheleinphilly saw the play and has read the book so she‘ll be able to tell you which was the toughest…. 9mo
Kitta @MicheleinPhilly was the book tough? With a read if I have my own SA trauma? I‘m worried it‘s too much. 9mo
MicheleinPhilly @Kitta I would probably advise you to skip it. For me, the play had a bigger emotional impact due to Jodie‘s performance, but this expands on everything and I was viscerally uncomfortable. 9mo
Kitta @MicheleinPhilly thanks! I will. The play had me in tears and I had a hard time with it, so I‘m happy to skip it if it‘ll be too hard to read. 9mo
MicheleinPhilly @Kitta Yes, that‘s probably a good decision. The play destroyed me and I walked back to my hotel, in the rain, in a daze. I was telling Helen the other day that a man in the bar saw my Playbill and asked me “You alright, love?” He had seen it the night before and he was still shaken by it. 9mo
squirrelbrain @kitta - I‘m sorry you‘ve been through such trauma. It sounds a wise idea to skip the book. 9mo

Wow! What can I say about this book. I guess first I'll start with the trigger warnings- explicit sexual conduct, issues regarding sexual assault and consent. This book will have contemplating and asking questions about is right and what is just. Extremely powerful, yet so many mixed emotions entangled with it. It's a must read! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Thank you #netgalley for the ARC for my honest review. I listened to the audiobook, Narrator was AMAZING!

I read this novelization of Suzie Miller‘s 1 woman show in a single sitting yesterday. Intense doesn‘t even begin to describe it. I was fortunate to have seen the play on Broadway and this expands on that, giving larger roles to Tessa‘s mum, brother, friends and co-workers. But this is still very much Tessa‘s story. Her heartbreak, fear, and RAGE are palpable. Highly recommended but please tread carefully.

squirrelbrain Just started it…. Only read first chapter though and, of course, not having seen the play I don‘t know the story. (I deliberately haven‘t looked up any spoilers) 9mo
The_Book_Ninja Saw the play in London with Jodi Comer. She was superb 9mo
MicheleinPhilly @The_Book_Ninja I was completely gobsmacked by her performance. 9mo

It‘s been a quiet day ‘round here, after the excitement of our 95th Birthday Bash on Thursday! Just enough visitors in Children‘s not to make me feel like I‘m in solitary, but mostly, I‘m reading and sipping. (But y‘all, what IS IT with the trend of not using quotation marks?????) 🤷🏻‍♀️💖 #primafacie #suziemiller

Jodie Comer was amazing as the unpredictable assassin in Killing Eve.So her next step is a one woman show?An intense look how women are often failed by the law in regards to sexual assault. From shows in Australia, Londons West End to Broadway.
Jodie had to take a day off when smoke from Canadian fires arrived. https://www.cbsnews.com/video/tony-nominee-jodie-comer-on-prima-facie/ an amazing segment!

MicheleinPhilly I saw her in this back in April. Truly extraordinary! 1y
