I wasn‘t planning on reading this and I kind of wish I hadn‘t. I am always reluctant to judge someone else‘s story but this could have benefitted from a heavier editorial hand. It is an important story, to be sure, but with so much focus on being famous and having lots of sex, I feel like the larger message was lost in the muddle. I wish him well and hope he stays sober but this just made me feel sorry for him. 😬

A soft pick. I have a feeling this will be a case of me enjoying the series more than the book. It was entertaining enough but went on a bit too long. Also was too similar to The Appeal in terms of it being a “cosy mystery.” Need to get back to my gritty serial killers. 😈

I was so looking forward to this but sadly, it was a MASSIVE letdown. There isn‘t a dead body until almost 300 pages in, one of the “twists” was hugely obvious from the start, and the emails and chats conceit became supremely annoying quite early on. I read half of it on the flight to Jamaica and then promptly abandoned it for 2 weeks. 👎🏼

There was nothing inherently wrong with this; it is actually quite well written and offers interesting psychological portraits of all of the women. BUT, those women are all SUPREMELY miserable so it became a bit of a slog. This is also a classic case of misleading marketing because this is not a suspenseful or thrilling tale at all. I‘m glad it was a library borrow.

This literally took my breath away - probably because I was snot crying like Viola Davis. To know that this brave, industrious young woman never got to set the world on fire in the way that she had hoped to brings me immense sadness. Chapters written by Fati‘s mother are interspersed throughout. This is a very tough read but it was written so beautifully. I absolutely adored it. RIP, Chef. 5🌟

SWOON!

This is not a “happy” novel by any means but I found it to be incredibly life affirming. 2 women, one a teenager and the other a married woman, navigate different types of heartbreak over the course of a single day in Dublin. It is a “quiet” story but the character portrayals are just gorgeous.

I started reading this 2, maybe 3, months ago. I could only take it in small chunks because it is just brutal. How Lavin managed to maintain some semblance of sanity while immersing herself in the world of racists, anti-Semites, white supremacists, neo-Nazis, homophobes, misogynists, incels, and conspiracy theorists is beyond me. Important to shed light on the violence and hatred consuming the world, but this was NOT an “enjoyable” read.

This is a light pick. While I thought the gentrification and family and neighborhood storylines were superb, the romance element really didn‘t work for me. I never got the sense that Luz and Hudson had any real chemistry. Certainly there were aspects of their relationship that served the rest of the story well, but overall it was just meh. Still, I‘m excited to see what she writes next.

This debut novel is not one I will soon forget. Malaya is an unforgettable character and the 1990s setting and cultural touchstones that Sullivan employs imbued this with such a sense of nostalgia. This was absolutely 🍌👖crazy. Like many children of the 80s I was obsessed with Go Ask Alice. My sheltered little Catholic brain found it salacious and scandalous. I literally haven‘t thought about this book for 40 years and had no idea any of the background behind the scam artist who penned it. squirrelbrain We‘re both feeling a bit brighter today, although I‘m still positive. Hubby didn‘t even bother to test as he‘s two days behind me. 3mo
MicheleinPhilly @squirrelbrain My wife didn‘t test positive until Monday so she‘s going to wait to test too. She‘s also taking Paxlovid so she may get a rebound infection. 😕 3mo
squirrelbrain Hopefully she‘ll be OK 🤞 3mo

Pickpick

This was somewhat creepy but mostly I just found it to be campy AF. Maybe it‘s my ‘rona brain, but I found myself laughing hysterically at bits that I don‘t think I was meant to. Still it was an entertaining read and I‘m always up for a cult narrative.

vivastory I was unaware that you had corona. I hope you feel better soon!! 3mo
DivineDiana Sorry to hear that you‘re Covid positive. Just finished a double round myself. Feel better. ❤️ 3mo
TrishB Hope you‘re on the mend soon. Happy reading hopefully! 3mo
