Wow, I loved this. On the edge on my seat and finished it in two days.
It‘s about a newly graduated Black nurse in Alabama working at a family planning clinic in 1973, shortly after the uncovering of the Tuskegee syphilis experiments. She fiercely fights for her patients, including a pair of young girls, ages 11 and 13. This novel jumps through time between 1973 and 2016 where she reflects on their case.
Highly recommended.
Willow helping me read outside today.
Bingo!! Double bingo!!
I‘ve really been focusing on lgbtq books this year and succeeded in readying a lot so far, although this includes novellas, short stories, and poetry so they aren‘t all big chunksters.
Going for a full card by the end of the year.

An interesting sapphic/queer dystopian science fiction gender swapped Sherlock Holmes and Watson retelling, set on Jupiter.
Mossa‘s investigation starts after a man disappears from one of the less often visited platforms they live on. Potential suicide? Or is there something more going on?

Here‘s my nominations for this year‘s #CampLitsy!
Excited to be a camper again and interested in what we will be reading!!
Went for a nonfiction as the first one, it‘s about a woman with psychosis and sounds fascinating. I doubt it‘ll be for everyone (I love a mental health memoir but they are really tough to read sometimes) but I‘ll just read it anyway if it doesn‘t get picked.

Obligatory eclipse photo, taken through some eclipse glasses with my iPhone today.

Had fun watching it even if we weren‘t in the totality path! We had about 90% coverage here in NYC.
Hit 10,000 today!!
I know this is low compared to some of you (looking at you @DebinHawaii 😂) but I‘m happy to be a part of this community!
Here‘s to 10,000 more!

Cute story about finding yourself and your gender presentation.
Dawn discovers a love letter written between two women dating from the 1950s in a book she‘s rebinding and follows the mystery of who they are and what happened to them. What enfolds ends up mirroring her life in unexpected ways.
Predictable, but a good story and what I needed for the moment.

Only $1.99 on US kindle! Should I get it? Has anyone read this?

I had such high hopes for this, but really struggled with it. In part because of the language. (I had to look up several words I didn‘t know in the dictionary, and English is my first language!) I found it hard to focus, it was so dense.
Very damning of Canada in terms of the treatment of indigenous peoples and an interesting perspective on NDN queer life, I‘m glad I read it but wouldn‘t recommend it.

Great book of poetry. They cover hard things like trauma, homophobia, transphobia, colonialism and family dynamics. Lots of trigger warnings.
My favourite poem was the first one, about sea glass and being shaped into something soft, instead of sharp with jagged edges that cut. It‘s about trauma and the face we present in order to be accepted.
It‘ll stay with me.

Picked up this poetry book on kindle for my next read in the #transrightsreadathon.
Beautiful cover and looks interesting! I don‘t read much poetry but I‘m getting into it slowly.

My 1st book for the #transrightsreadathon and I thought it was great! I very much want to read his memoir now.

JVN discusses queer life in a series of personal essays complete with research and data to back up his opinions (love a good reference). Covering grief, public perception and imposter syndrome, as well as his HIV+ status and the HIV safety net, among other things - this was a great quick read.

“The fear of being unloveable due to past experiences is the literal definition of shame, and shame isn‘t something to keep buried.” 👏
#transrightsreadathon #lgbtq #nonbinary
Starting this for the #transrightsreadathon. I saw him speak last year and he signed my copy!
JVN is famous for doing hair & makeovers on Queer Eye but is also known for being outspoken about being #nonbinary (he/they/she pronouns) and for living publicly with #HIV. He was well spoken and I hope the essays in the book are interesting!
He‘s also written a memoir: “Over the Top: A Raw Journey to Self-Love”

Head about this from @ChaoticMissAdventures and thought it would be great to participate in the #transrightsreadathon!
Going to be reading the tagged book I bought after seeing Johnathan Van Ness give a talk at the 92Y.

I‘ve been working on my French and decided to read this novella again.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I had to look up a lot of words but thankfully kindle makes it easy. A lovely story, but sad.
Anyone have any recommendations for adult beginner/intermediate French books?

Interesting debut by a trans author!
Centred on an intense friendship in a New York City high school that begins on 9/11, this novel kinda slightly missed the mark for me.
I was interested in the fate of the characters but the chapters using AIM chat and livejournal blog posts were off putting to me.
Something about Nell and Fays blog really made me uncomfortable? I don‘t know how to articulate it.

1. Something valuable I learned during my career: patience and perseverance.
2. Current career: Genomics scientist! I study DNA 🧬 and what we can learn from it in human health and disease (I specialize in cancer diagnostics).👩🏻🔬 Here‘s me during Covid working in the lab!
3. What I would do otherwise: I worked for a while in marine biology, I would love to do that or scuba dive every day and teach scuba diving. 🤿
“What‘s the oldest book you‘ve read by publication date?” ~ @BookmarkTavern
I had to look this one up on my trusty goodreads stats page and the oldest book I‘ve read written in English is A Midsummer Nights Dream by Shakespeare.
I‘ve also read Tao Te Ching which was published in 401 but I read a 1997 translation so that doesn‘t count.
It‘s funny you can see when I started keeping track of the books I read and see the pub year increase. 🤓
But late for this one for #litsyToB24 but I‘m going to start it today!
New happy lamp that looks like the moon 🌕 perfect for this rainy day.

Some aspects really resonated with me while others did not. I don‘t cry easily and really struggle to allow myself to feel emotions. Her depression and utter heartbreak is relatable, but I didn‘t see myself in this.
I listened to this as a audiobook, narrated by the author. The version I had from #BOTM had her reading out the numbers of each chapter and this bothered me because there‘s so many chapters and it took me out of the story a bit.
No reading for me yesterday. Decided to learn a new stitch (brioche) and make a near ear warmer headband thing!
I have to get into audiobooks so I can craft and read at the same time! Anyone have any recommendations? I was turned off by the narrator in the last one I tried. 🙉🙈
Trigger warnings for rape and eating disorders
I‘ve had this on the TBR for years because I knew there was a description of rape, and as a survivor myself, I wasn‘t in a place where I could read it.
I‘m glad I did.
Our stories are similar. We both suffered sexual assault and gained weight as a defence mechanism. We‘re queer. We both hunger for more. More food, more love, more acceptance.
I want to tell my own story one day. #botm

Got a cold and am staying for the weekend but feeling well enough to read now! Not so much the past few days.
This has been on the #TBR shelf for years because I was always worried it would be too intense but feeling like I want to read it now.
Anther black author for #blackhistorymonth and a #BOTM pick.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Full of magical realism, this story of slavery in the southern USA hits pretty hard. I love Jesmyn Ward (Definitely recommend Salvage the Bones!) but there was a bit too much about spirits for me and the subject is very heavy.
Still fantastic writing & I liked the story, so 4 stars.
Here‘s my #cataoflitsy snuggled up on this cold, snowy New York City morning.
Lots of tags for this one:

I love finding #littlefreelibraries everywhere I go!
This one was in Crystal River, Florida.
Current reading location: Orlando Florida!
I‘m here for a conference and spending a few days in Crystal River afterwards to see the manatees!
Yes I do I have a Nightingale and a Rose from the Oscar Wilde short story - be prepared if you read it, it‘s devastating!
I also wanted Bagheera from the Jungle Book but ended up getting a regular leopard instead on my back. I wanted a regal protector character and the leopard seemed perfect.
I also want a squid from 20,000 leagues under the sea.
Maybe if people want I can post pictures of them!

I wanted to get through some of my TBR and prioritize black authors for #blackhistorymonth!
I loved Salvage the Bones so I have high hopes for this one!

Loved this story intertwining multiple generations of a family across their lives in the Caribbean, the UK and the USA.
A book about how family recipes can link us, about family history and how it defines us, and about love.
I really liked the history of the ingredients and recipes, the influence of multiple cultures and countries coming together, and the ocean science scattered throughout.
Fantastic first novel!
#botm
Starting off the year with a short excerpt from Homer‘s The Iliad.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I really enjoyed this. A good taster of stories of Achilles. I was a bit confused at times but that‘s because I don‘t know enough Greek mythology.
Who is who‘s son and who is his mother? 🤣
Great little intro. Read in the bath because it‘s been a stressful day.
#lgbtbookbingo #lgbtq2023 @Kenyazero
I didn‘t finish the whole card but I did get a bingo!!
I didn‘t read nearly as much this year so I‘m happy with that. Can‘t wait for the next one!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I really like the last story of the woman who goes over Niagara Falls in a barrel but the others were so-so.
Interesting short read for anyone trying to hit their goal for the year since it‘s NYE!
It‘s my birthday month in Jan which means two #BOTM books!
Cute light high fantasy read!

Last day in the Bahamas and back to chilly NYC.
Starting this while lying on the beach in the Bahamas!
Merry Christmas Everyone! 🎄
I hope you all get lots of books 📚
Devastating and powerful mis of prose and poetry. Love, loss, longing for what could have been.
This is a memoir about the loss of her first born child to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome at 1 month old.
Loved and felt immersed by the language. 5/5 would recommend.
Tw: child death
Oof picked this kindle single not knowing what it was about and oh my god did it punch me in the feelings.
Bittersweet is prose and poems and the loss of her 1 month old baby, Jesse.
Poignant and powerful. #poetrymatters
Loved this role reversal in this novella where women are in charge and men are the ones at home caring for the children.
One thing that bothered me was the men protesting for the right to masturbate. This is not at all the same as women protesting for abortion choices or to not be subjected to casual sexual assault. Serious health problems can occur from these and the comparison fell flat for me.
Otherwise fantastic quick read.
