The Madwoman in the Attic
The Madwoman in the Attic: The Woman Writer and the Nineteenth-Century Literary Imagination | Sandra M. Gilbert, Susan Gubar
In this work of feminist literary criticism the authors explore the works of many major 19th-century women writers. They chart a tangible desire expressed for freedom from the restraints of a confining patriarchal society and trace a distinctive female literary tradition.

I know it's late for #Day4 #SavvySettings #ATTIC but I wanted to pay homage to a marvelous work of #literarycriticism that influenced at least 2 generations of writers & critics -- and these 3 works of fiction all develop the theme: #JaneEyre,# TheYellowWallpaper, & #WideSargassoSea

Some people may consider Bertha Mason the character most #offtheirrocker in Jane Eyre, but I think it's Mr. Brocklehurst. #characters2017

Carissa-Green-Reads I think it's the nasty aunt. 7y

rubyslippersreads @Carissa-Green-Reads I thought of her too, as well as her awful son, John Reed. 7y

One of my favorite nonfiction books is this feminist literary theory classic. Picture is of my botched dye job, which is turning me into a different kind of mad woman. #MOREORLESS

Thanks, Liberty!

Soubhiville I like your hair! (Mine's pink though, so there's that 😉) 8y
Notafraidofwords I like it! 8y
Zelma Thank so much for posting. I know you had many curious people here! 😁 and agree with others; just have fun with it. 8y

katedensen @Soubhiville @Notafraidofwords @Zelma Thank you! It's just not what I wanted ("natural golden red highlights like last time") and my colorist keeps insisting this is the color we always do, so I'm frustrated. Oh well. 8y
tpixie Not natural golden red, but a great color!! 8y
Laalaleighh I really love your hair! I wish mine was that red! I bet if they put a toner on it snddid some bayalage highlights through it to make it more multi tonal that you would love it! (Although it's beautiful as is!) 8y
katedensen @tpixie Thank you! @Laalaleighh Thanks...it actually looks much better in the pictures than in person...I'm going tomorrow to have her fix it so fingers crossed! 8y
tpixie @katedensen 🤞 ❤️💕 8y
Laalaleighh I'm sure it will be wonderful. But I get having hair horror. I've had colonists dye my hair orange and had someone leave patches of brown in my blonde hair. I understand. I also once tried to dye my hair brown and it turned out her black. Which I do not have the coloring for at all. My friends called me vampire Snow White for weeks! 8y
katedensen @Laalaleighh Vampire Snow White! That's the whole reason I dye my hair in the first place honestly--my natural color is so dark brown it's almost black, which is just TOO much with the Shirley Temple curls and translucent skin 😂 8y
Laalaleighh I feel you! I'm soooo pale. There's like a very small window of color between too dark and too light that does totally wash me out! 8y

Fun Photo Friday: My books are grouped loosely by subject throughout my house. This is just a smattering of my "Girl Power" collection.

SusanInTiburon 💜💜💜 Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl was powerful, and the Gilbert and Gubar was huge for me in college. Love your stacks! 8y
