This book is so beautiful. I haven‘t read the other ones and I was able to understand what was going on. Definitely going to read the other ones now!! ☕️

We're back in Tokyo for more tales from Funiculi Funicula, though I think they are out of sequence and come somewhere between books 1 and 2. The stories here are more stand alone, unlike the interconnected ones in earlier volumes, but it's basically the familiar comforting formula.

I did read somewhere that there is another one going to be published in September - though I'm not sure if that's the Japanese original or the English translation.

Book 4 FINALLY came in at the library after months of being on hold. Yay! That being said, I kind of hope this is Kawaguchi's last installment in this series. As much as I liked books one and two, book three and now four have fallen somewhat flat for me. The concepts behind the stories are still well and good, but something about the writing and the timing just seems off to me. ⭐⭐⭐ + 1/2 ⭐

Fourth installment of Before The Coffee Gets Cold. I enjoyed it. I would like to re-read all of them at one point, straight through. Pretty sure my favorite was the third, Before Your Memory Fades.

4.5⭐️ - The regulars at the magical Café Funiculi Funicula from Toshikazu Kawaguchi's sensational Before the Coffee Gets Cold Series are well acquainted with its famous legend and extraordinary time-travel offer. This fourth novel introduces us to a new set of visitors: the husband with something important left to say; the woman who couldn't bid her dog farewell; the woman who couldn't answer a proposal; and the daughter who drove her father away.

Another four sweet stories with a bit of a twist to make the dialogue between characters returning to their past unexpected in the most realistic way possible.

I've just realized I enjoy these time travel café stories so much because they are incredibly therapeutic; these short books leave the reader with a sense that people are able to heal emotionally if they choose to do so.

In real life they also make me think of the systemic family constellations therapy as a possible substitute for what the café facilitates.

⭐️⭐️⭐️½ - Rounding up to a Pick.
My final book of 2023! I thought this was the weakest of the four books so far. However, I still enjoyed it and still ended up in tears. Looking forward to the fifth book!

I love this whole series of books. They are written in such a gentle way, and it makes me slow down and appreciate a good story. I particularly liked this grouping of stories as each challenged the rules and considered breaking them. …But crap, would you risk being turned into a ghost by blatantly drinking cold coffee. Ah, nooo!

Like the other books in this series, we get the stories of people who want to go back to the past to see loved ones, even knowing they can‘t change the future. I enjoyed this book a little more than the previous entry, although I‘m not sure why.

We‘re not doing much today because I‘ve been sick and am recovering, so I‘m just sitting here reading this fourth book in the Before the Coffee Gets Cold series. Happy Thanksgiving, y‘all!

Very repetitive, very similar to previous installments, but still touching, sad, compassionate and bitter sweet.
