Christmas Swap
Christmas Swap | Talia Samuels
12 posts | 6 read | 1 to read
Perfect for fans of Alison Cochrun and Helena Greer, Talia Samuels' debut sapphic romcom is about one woman who fake dates her friend...only to fall for his sister. Margot Murray is a newly single, successful businesswoman with no interest in a cutesy seasonal romance after her breakup with her long-term girlfriend. Ben Gibson is an unlucky-in-love sweetheart in need of a woman to bring home for the holidays. Together, they make a pact: Margot gets two blissful weeks away from London in a picture-perfect manor, and Ben gets a fake girlfriend for his holiday at home with his family. Upon arriving to the manor, Margot meets Ben's sister, Ellie, who is suspicious of the supposed relationship right from the start. Ellie intends to get to the bottom of their relationship, not being able to see how the two of them work as a couple. As Ellie and Margot grow closer, will Ben and Margot be able to keep the charade up, or will Margot and Ellie risk the chance at something real?

I almost didn't finish this one. I was mostly enjoying it as a good background audiobook with a silly premise. The characters were a bit unlikable at first but grew on me. But then right before the end the main character made a decision that really annoyed me & I had to take a break. I did end up listening to the last hour eventually & was happy with the ending. I think overall this one just had some triggers that hit too close to home for me TW⤵️

Delightfully Christmassy with a Hallmark-esque ending.

After a rough breakup, Margot agrees to go home with a near-stranger as his fake girlfriend. Unfortunately, his younger sister Ellie is exactly Margot's type--and vice versa. Ellie knows her brother's new girlfriend is hiding something, and she's determined to find out what--even if it means breaking up the two of them. This book was full of holiday cheer and sweet romance. TW for mentions and depictions of a past emotionally abusive relationship.

This weekend I'm listening to a cute Christmas rom-com and reading a Korean alternate history novel. What about you?

I really love silly queer holiday rom coms, but unfortunately this book just delivered all of it really badly. It‘s partly my taste and me struggling to enjoy British rom coms that are all too sweet and twee, but the prose was bad, none of the characters had much reason for doing anything, the twists weren‘t twists and everyone spoke in that annoying therapy language speak. Just a lot of people declaring why they do things rather than doing much.
