I didn't realize that Annie Hartnett had a new book out, but as soon as I did I scrambled to get a copy! Unlikely Animals and Rabbit Cake are such phenomenal books, so I have really high hopes for this one! 🩷📚

This was much heavier of a read than I was anticipating. However, there were so many quirky characters & situations that the balance between sad and funny was very well done. After finishing it, I think it‘s a five star read. Originally I thought 4 stars bc PJ walked a thin line for me between, “Poor guy” and “OMG! Grow up!” But then I loved Pancakes (the agent of death cat) and that character deserved a star, ergo, a five star read ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A funny, heartwarming book full of death, dysfunctional family drama, and a cat. Very on brand for Hartnett. Really enjoyed it.
Another roadtrip book for the summer. This is a great book but don‘t be fooled by the cartoonish cover. A LOT of dark/sad stuff happens in this. I was fully engaged with where PJ was going and what would happen next. The cat, Pancakes, is a highlight so I thought my cat could show off the book. She does not share his ability, luckily.
Pure magic! This book brought me so much joy during an over-the-top busy week and was the perfect thing to pull me away from the over-the-top awful daily news. I might love this as much as Rabbit Cake (though RC is due a reread). I fell hard for these characters (Pancakes the most but all the rest, too) and will never tire of Hartnett‘s blend of whimsy, tenderness, and just the right amount of darkness. A (maybe THE) fave of the year for sure.

Perfection. Poignant, funny, and heartwarming without the cheesiness. I loved this story, and it made me think that I‘ve probably been undervaluing Hartnett‘s earlier books. Might need to reread and see if I don‘t stumble across another character that I love as much as I love PJ. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
PJ Halliday is quickly becoming one of my favorite main characters, right up there with Nathan Drum and Linus Baker. 💞
“Women never did that back then, it was men who went out for a pack of smokes and never returned, but Regina Halliday was ahead of her time.” 😄
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A warm fuzzy gut punch. Hartnett once again proves why she is a must-read author for me. Creative and quirky. Dark, but with a lot of heart. Real and surreal. So freaking good!
Both books I‘m reading right now have precocious cats with plural food names: Bananas and Pancakes. What is happening?!? Love these kind of weird coincidences.
I love everything Annie Hartnett writes. Once I started this, I was frustrated every minute I had to spend doing anything other than finish it. This will definitely be a reread at some point. There's so much death and so much goes wrong, but it's still so hopeful and funny. Five gold stars! ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐⭐

It doesn‘t happen often, but sometimes you know a book will claim its space on your favorites shelf within the first chapter. Annie Hartnett writes with the most exquisite blend of funny and sad, whimsy and warmth, tragedy and hope. The characters fully come to life with her storytelling. I loved the audiobook format, which was perfectly narrated. 🎧
My big thumbs up favorite is tagged, and the disappointment with this grid is that I own a physical copy (for now) of my least favorite but not the physical copy (yet) of my favorite🤪
5 ⭐️= Loved It, want to shout out loud about this book! I do/will own/keep a physical copy. A+
4 ⭐️= Liked it, would love to discuss. Solid B
3 ⭐️= Meh, no need to discuss. Avg C
2 ⭐️=Nope D
1 ⭐️=DNF F
I rather loved road tripping with 63yo PJ (who lived a vacant life for the previous 15 years) before he sets out to find the 2nd love of his life with his newfound family to include Pancakes - a death predicting cat😱 I so-so‘d my last post for misery after misery but was immediately immersed in this one with its lovable characters defining this charming and bittersweet story. Strong pick but with a TW for the casual take on death.
