Discontent: A Novel | Beatriz Serrano
8 posts | 9 read | 23 to read
From a dazzling new international voice, an audacious, darkly funny novel about a young woman whose carefully crafted office persona threatens to crack when shes forced to attend her companys annual retreat "A wry work of spectacular wit. . . . Beatriz Serrano writes with a caustic flare for detail, exploring the small humiliations of the everyday corporate office with charm and utter hilarity. Absolutely brilliant." Danya Kukafka, author of Notes on an Execution On the surface, Marisa's life looks enviable. She lives in a beautiful apartment in the center of Madrid, she has a hot neighbor who is always around to sleep with her, and shes quickly risen through the ranks at a successful advertising agency. And yet shes drowning in a dark hole of existential dread induced by the banality of corporate life. Marisa hates her job and everyone at it. She spends her working hours locked in her office hiding from her coworkers, bingeing YouTube videos, and getting high on tranquilizers. When she has the time, she escapes to her favorite museum where she contemplates the meaning of life while staring at Hieronymus Bosch paintings, or trying to get hit by a car so she can go on disability. But Marisa's dubious success, which is largely built on lies and work she's stolen from other people, is in danger of being exposed when she's forced to go on her companys team-building retreat. Isolated in the Segovia forests, haunted by the deeply buried memory of a former coworker, and surrounded by psychopathic bosses, overzealous coworkers, flirty retreat staff, and an excess of drugs, Marisa finds herself acting on her wildest impulses and is pushed to the brink of a complete spiral.

#12booksfor2025

and we‘ve made it through to the end!

I was complaining to a colleague that I didn‘t feel like any of my audiobooks and instead of telling me to 🤫 she threw some recommendations at me - and this was the result!

Unclear if I need to be concerned about how relatable I found Marisa - like, is it relatable to the millennial experience ™️ or do I need to reflect more on how I coped with 2025? It‘s probably fine 🚍

thegirlwiththelibrarybag @TheEllieMo - I really enjoyed this - thanks for keeping it going, and being absolutely amazing about commenting on every post 💜 happy new year! 2d
TheEllieMo @thegirlwiththelibrarybag you‘re welcome, and thank you for joining in ☺️ I‘ve really enjoyed seeing what other people have enjoyed reading over the last year…. And added about 100 books to my want-to-read list🤣🤣 2d
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @TheEllieMo, I‘m always so pleased with myself when I find something before it‘s basically finished 🤣 hahaha, well that‘s 2026 sorted then! 📚 2d

I almost returned this unread, as I could see there was quite a few people waiting on it - but happily, I pushed play - and ended up discovering one of my favourite books of the year.

Marisa is someone I found, somewhat uncomfortably, relatable. Her life looks good on paper but the reality doesn‘t quite match up. I empathised and laughed out loud on several occasions (especially the part with the out of office emails).

I really felt this book, despite not being a full-time office worker for more than a couple of years in the past 20 years. Serrano's (or at least her translator's) tone blends well both the existential despair and existential ridiculousness of being a creative---or even just a conscious, discerning, aware human being---in a corporate environment. And oh, my, did she make me crave a trip to Spain in general and El Museo del Prado in particular.

ImperfectCJ Photo is the street near where we stayed in Madrid in 2017. My photos of the museum aren't awesome, and our favorite part of the trip was our time in northern Spain (Asturias, León, El Parque Nacional de los Picos de Europa), but I really liked Barrio de las Letras where we stayed in Madrid. I'm listening to and reading the Spanish version of this novel, too, while the English translation is fresh in my mind, hoping to make progress on my Spanish. 2mo

🎶 It‘s the most wonderful (reading) time of the year 🎵 October‘s #Bookspin list. I love October reading, especially with the #Dewey 24-hour readathon.

This cousin to Office Space is a darkly funny look at office culture and the inanity of certain jobs. But, it goes a step further by critiquing the emptiness of modern online life. When it inevitably goes off the rails, it does so in ways I didn‘t expect. I really enjoyed this and am happy to see BOTM stretching a bit.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book… It made me suppress giggles while reading it in public. It surprised and delighted me; it held up a mirror to me. It made me thoughtful. It nailed millennial malaise and professional ennui with a cutting potency. Has your job burnt you to the ground? Read this and come back to life. #BOTM

aa_guer2021 I still have my September book to pick. As I have zero shelf control (😅) I now got two of them, including this one thanks to your review. We shall see. 📚 (edited) 4mo

Halle Butler but make it Spanish (Catalonian?) in Madrid. Lots of millennial workplace ennui. Slow in the beginning but sticks the landing big time!

I like that #botm is experimenting with translated lit.

Took a break because my relationship ended and then I have surgery next week (of course). 🤦🏻‍♀️ I‘ll be in and out, but hopefully more in this fall!

Deblovestoread Wishing you a successful surgery and a easy recovery ❤️‍🩹 4mo
