San Juan Noir
San Juan Noir | Mayra Santos-Febres
11 posts | 3 read | 10 to read
Akashic Books continues its groundbreaking series of original noir anthologies, launched in 2004 with "Brooklyn Noir." Each story is set in a distinct neighborhood or location within the city of the book. The Noir Series has made a strong mark in the Caribbean with "Havana Noir," "Kingston Noir," "Haiti Noir," and "Trinidad Noir." This volume showcases the fact that the island of Puerto Rico is not all sandy beaches and extravagant hotels. Mayra Santos-Febres is one of the island's literary titans, and she has recruited a stellar list of compatriots to contribute. Brand-new stories by: Wilfredo J. Burgos Matos, Ernesto Quinonez, Mayra Santos-Febres, Jose Rabelo, Luis Negron, Yolanda Arroyo Pizarro, Ana Maria Fuster Lavin, Janette Becerra, Manolo Nunez Negron, Tere Davila, Edmaris Carazo, Alejandro Alvarez Nieves, Charlie Vazquez, and Manuel Melendez."

Mahalo for the #Two4Tuesday @Eggs !!! 🤗

1️⃣ Subgenre of crime fiction with dark gritty themes, sex & violence & flawed anti-heroes with lots of moral ambiguity. 🔪🔪🔪

2️⃣ I don‘t read a lot of it, but I have the tagged/pictured book & a couple of other city noirs in my physical #TBR along with a couple of recent novels Velvet Was the Night & Razoorblade Tears that are also listed as noir.🤷🏻‍♀️

TheSpineView Thanks for playing! 2y
Eggs ❤️❤️ 2y

After my seven-hour layover in Heathrow on the way to Copenhagen, I'm an even bigger fan of direct flights to places such as Puerto Rico. I barely scratched the surface on a brief visit several years ago, so I need to go back! #wanderingjune #laislabonita

Cinfhen Great photo!!! Copenhagen sounds awesome ✈️safe travels 5y
Susanita @Cinfhen Thanks! I‘m traveling again this weekend, but the big trip with layovers was last month. (I don‘t really travel that much, but it seems to come in spurts.) Photo is from PR. 5y
Cinfhen Are u located in the UK? Lots of good destinations from there😉🤩 5y
Susanita @Cinfhen I‘m in the US 5y

#HeatIfJuly #Despacito

I don't think I paid attention to the lyrics in this catchy song or their translation. It's pretty spicy !?? I went with "We're gonna do it on a beach in Puerto Rico..." line. I spent time in Old San Juan about 15 years ago as we opened the Starbucks market there & I walked around Fort San Felipe Del Morro (shown on the cover of these noir stories) to exercise. I mostly remember all the feral cats ???prowling around.

#FierceFeb #NightInTheCity 🌃This book series explores the dark & seedy sides of different cities through stories set in them & makes me think of nights in the city. I have the tagged book, although I haven't read it yet and I want to find the Seattle & Portland Noir books too. Maybe some day there will even be a Honolulu Noir. 🌴📚👍😆 Here's a link to the cities available: http://www.akashicbooks.com/subject/noir-series/

DebinHawaii @batsy @Cinfhen Thank you! Living on the dark side! 😆🖤 6y
DebinHawaii @LeahBergen That one looks good too! Some cities seem to lend themselves to these books. 📚👍 6y
DebinHawaii @Debbates101 They are story collections & I think primarily fiction though I'm not sure if any if the stories are historical fiction or not. 🤔 6y
DebinHawaii @Ekonrad Interesting! The stories definitely seem dark and strange. 👍📚 6y
DebinHawaii @ValerieAndBooks Hah! That would be nice. 😆I found the San Juan Noir at the thrift store so I have been hoping to find some of the others. 6y

Day8 #feistyfeb #latinxauthors A selection of books from Latinx authors from my stacks. The House of the Spirits I read for a Women's Lit class I took YEARS ago in college, Like Water For Chocolate is an all-time fave, Burn Baby Burn and Aristotle & Dante are recent reads I loved, & The House on Mango Street & San Juan Noir (multiple authors of Puerto Rican heritage) were recent thrift shop buys for my TBR stack that I hope to get to in 2017.📚👍

Pickpick

This beautiful short story collection is gut wrenching. Puerto Rico is known as the pearl of the Caribbean, but here you see the reality of a lot of people living in the island suffocating by the economy, gender expectations and violence. The reader sees the horrible circumstances that drive people to take drastic decisions to find happiness, feed themselves or find love. Here, Puerto Rico drowns in politics, poverty and class issues. (TW Below).

Notafraidofwords Animal abuse, rape, domestic abuse. 7y
Megabooks Fantastic review!! 7y
britt_brooke Nice review! 7y
Notafraidofwords @Ebooksandcooks thank you, these stories are tough but important to understand the culture that is SAN Juan, Puerto Rico. I love that people think Puerto Rico is beautiful, but there are also real issues that are important to discuss. @britt_brooke 7y

"The beatings my mother got nightly began to take their toll...there was no shadow left of the woman I had loved so much..." This collection of stories set in PR is so powerful. Often times in Hollywood movies, Latina women are depicted as spitfires. They control their husband with their passion, food and dancing. That is far from the reality for a lot of women. As a PR woman I can say that domestic abuse is very real among Puerto Rican families.

Libby1 I liked your comment but not at all the sad nature of it. I can't find a purple ribbon emoji here but I will add a heart. 💜#domesticviolenceawareness 7y
Notafraidofwords @Libby1 thank you so much. Domestic abuse is so so important and it doesn't get talked about nearly enough. 7y
Libby1 No. it doesn't. I spent 3 1/2 years working with victims of domestic violence in the legal system. It changed me forever. 7y
Notafraidofwords @Libby1 wow , thank you for your service. 7y

...because sometimes I have a dream that I am looking for home...and I know for sure that I miss the island...I know that my ancestors are making noise...they are telling me that pain is only a season...that the palms will sway in the morning...
I do not buy books often, but when I do I like to show my support. 😍😃🤓.

Notafraidofwords First story already examine class issues in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 :Isn't it better to make things of this world fall, according to their own weight, while here above you can order and pay for everything, think and resolve everything, win and lose everything...without ever going down? 7y

When you read so much that people "think of you" when they see a tablet/ereader holder and buy it for you. The Halloween decor will be happy I won't be using it to hold my Kindle anymore ??
