Bad Days in History
Bad Days in History: A Gleefully Grim Chronicle of Misfortune, Mayhem, and Misery for Every Day of the Year | Michael Farquhar
9 posts | 5 read | 14 to read
National Geographic and author Michael Farquhar uncover an instance of bad luck, epic misfortune, and unadulterated mayhem tied to every day of the year. From Caligula's blood-soaked end to hotelier Steve Wynn's unfortunate run-in with a priceless Picasso, these 365 tales of misery include lost fortunes (like the would-be Apple investor who pulled out in 1977 and missed out on a $30 billion-dollar windfall), romance gone wrong (like the 16th-century Shah who experimented with an early form of Viagra with empire-changing results), and truly bizarre moments (like the Great Molasses Flood of 1919). Think youre having a bad day? Trust us, it gets worse.

We‘ve had rain all week and the thunderstorms tonight were finally too much for my new migraine medication to handle. Migraine means no reading on a device and the only print books on my Junei TBR are dense hardcovers or one I really don‘t want to read, so I‘m going to restart this one. Fun fact - apparently I first picked it up 6 years ago and posted about it when I had a migraine. 🤣 Let‘s see if I finish it this time.

Tamra Feel better! 10mo
CatLass007 Migraines are the worst! I can push through anything. Arthritic everything, needing but refusing to get a total knee replacement, torn rotator cuff surgery recovery. But migraines? Nope. No pushing through one of those. I had Botox injections in my neurologist‘s office several years ago and they worked exceptionally well. But health insurance companies don‘t exactly have anyone‘s best interest in mind. I had to stop taking Botox. (cont)⬇️ 10mo
CatLass007 Then I got the Daith piercing in both ears. I was migraine free for an entire year. I really couldn‘t believe it. I also couldn‘t believe it when the migraines resumed out of the blue. I spent the last few years being unable to make plans or commitments. Recently, my neurologist and I made the decision to give Botox another shot. We were able to get prior authorization and I had my first injections thirteen days ago. (cont)⬇️ 10mo

CatLass007 All this me, me, me rambling is to encourage you that there is hope for preventing migraines. I strongly encourage you to keep trying. 10mo
DGRachel @tamra Thank you! 10mo
DGRachel @CatLass007 I know the migraine merry-go-round very well. I had my first when I was 10. They became more frequent in my early 20s and by my early 30s they'd become chronic. Botox helped, but not enough to justify continuing. I've recently started Nurtec as a preventative (in addition to the one I've been taking for a decade and quarterly nerve block injections). The Nurtec has been a game changer. (cont) 10mo
DGRachel @catlass007 Without the Nurtec, I'd have been down for the count all week. With it, I had a migraine 4 days after the storms started and it lasted less than 4 hours. I hope the Botox helps you! Insurance sucks. It took more than a year for me to get authorization for the Nurtec. 10mo
CatLass007 @DGRachel Yikes! More than a year? I hope the Nurtec continues to work for you. My Mom used to have terrible migraines but when she had a hysterectomy, they went away. I was looking forward to menopause because I thought they‘d go away. But they didn‘t. 10mo
DGRachel @CatLass007 Oh yes. I have high hopes for menopause. 😂😂 The worst part of the insurance approval is that it‘s only through November. I‘m guessing I‘ll have to prove it‘s working. My poor doctor‘s office. The amount of paperwork they had to throw at my insurance company multiple times is ridiculous. Here‘s to effective treatments and relief for both of us! 🥂 10mo
CatLass007 @DGRachel Good luck with that menopause! My neurologist‘s office has a person who just does prior authorizations. I guess they just expect it these days. Kudos to those who give a rat‘s ass about taking care of us.👏🎉🎊 And just poop on the health insurance industry bigwigs… The people who we talk to in customer service are just there trying to make a living and doing the best they can and deserve kindness and respect. 10mo

Thanks to a weather triggered migraine, I'm struggling to focus on Water Beetles, so I think I'm going to give this little gem a try. I picked it up at Park Road Books today on a whim and I'm pretty excited about it.

ValerieAndBooks I hope your migraine ends soon 🤕. And, I'll have to stack this. I enjoyed his 7y
mom2bugnbee This sounds like fun! 7y
DGRachel @ValerieAndBooks I saw the list of other books he's written inside this one and I'm going to have to hunt them down. They all look fascinating. 7y

This was a fun book to read. The history stories told in this book are not in most history books.
