Gillespie and I
Gillespie and I: A Novel | Jane Harris
15 posts | 21 read | 25 to read
From the Orange Prize-nominated author of The Observations comes an absorbing, atmospheric exploration of one young womans friendship with a volatile artist and her place in the controversy that consumes him. Jane Harriss Gillespie and I presents a strongly voiced female protagonist evocative of Moll Flanders and Becky Sharp, who offers a keen sensibility, deeply felt observations, and poignant remembrances of the world of a young artist in turn-of-the-century Glasgow in this fantastic work of historical fiction. Londons Sunday Times calls Gillespie and I a literary novel where the storytelling is as skilful as the writing is fine. Fans of The Piano Teacher and The Thirteenth Tale will find it irresistible and unforgettable.

Currently reading.

I‘m in one of those moods where I really don‘t know what I feel like reading next (which is rare for me). I‘ve had this copy of Gillespie and I sitting on my shelves for years and somehow its time has come. 😆

Ruthiella I loved Gillespie and I. Her debut is also really good (and different in tone) 2y
CarolynM I‘m feeling a bit like that at the moment. I‘ve started and discarded a few books this week☹️ 2y
LeahBergen @Ruthiella I really liked The Observations! It was the reason why I picked this one up at a sale (but somehow let it age on my shelves 😆). 2y

LeahBergen @CarolynM I hate when I get like this. I usually know what I‘m going to read next before I finish a book. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
Ruthiella I just ordered her third book a minute ago. I feel like I need to be a completist! 😆 2y
batsy Hope they both fit your mood! Lovely covers, as always 😍 2y
LeahBergen @Ruthiella Ooo, I can‘t wait to hear what you think of it. I just checked yesterday to see if she had published anything else recently. 2y
LeahBergen @batsy 😘😘 2y
UwannaPublishme You have the coolest vintage books to chose from! 2y

Took me a full 30 minutes to decide on my next read...this one seems to tick several boxes for me...artists, an independent woman of means, London/Glasgow, tragedy, mystery, a “chilling tale” 📖
One blurb even calls it “literary crack cocaine”☠️

MamaGina Just realized that last year I read and enjoyed another of her novels 3y
Ruthiella This book is really great! I also LOVED her debut, The Observations. I need to get Sugar Money.😀 3y
Librarybelle I really liked this one! 3y
LeahBergen I loved The Observations, too, @Ruthiella ! I have this one waiting on my shelves. 👍🏻 3y

I was having a clear out & came across some old uni notes discussing unreliable narrators. I was obviously in my Wuthering Heights phase as I referenced that A LOT! 🤣

Of more recent times I really enjoyed the unreliable narrator of this novel. And when I say enjoy she made me want to scream & bang my head against the wall! 😡😱😳🤯

Any recs for other good examples of unreliable narrator stories? Tag me your favourites.

readingjedi @MidnightBookGirl Well, that sounds awesome! Thanks 🙂 4y
Ruthiella Totally! I had no clue what was coming when I read Gillespie and I. If you like that sort of slow reveal, I can recommend 4y
readingjedi @Ruthiella Thanks for the rec, it's one of those books I feel like I should have read but never get round to! 4y

Well, this had its share of twists and turns! Harriet Baxter tells her story of her friendship with the Gillespies, and the reader sees all is not what it seems...definitely an unreliable narrator. There are parts of this story that seem long and drawn out, but I enjoyed it overall.

This is a little over 500 pages in length. I have about 120 pages to go, so I consider myself in #thefinalcountdown . I hope to finish this up today! #rocktober

Jinjer What WAS Vladimir doing??? 7y
Librarybelle @Jinjer He was racing up and down the hallway, then proceeded to grab a bath mat from the bathroom and drag it into the hallway. He was super charged last night! 7y

Mehso-so

I really enjoyed the writing in that the MC was fully developed, as was the setting. Harris did a nice job of hinting at the mystery coming, but but but but, it took exactly half of the novel to get to the tragic event. So much in the first half didn't seem necessary for the novel to work. The trial section was tedious & I skimmed. But the end is a little ambiguous 👍🏾and left me wondering about narrator reliability.

My current bookmark. ☺️ Bought a few of these made out of recycled book spines this summer from a shop that sold only handmade recycled items. Fun place!

Bklover What a great idea! Love the bookmark! 7y
Tamra @Bklover there were all kinds of old titles I'd never heard of & had to look up. 🙂 7y

I love Harriet Baxter's tongue in cheek humor. I'm afraid I'm too busy with novels to have a fern collection...

#lyricalapril The prompt #amIwrong made me think of unreliable narrators. Here's a few I've read with narrators who might be telling you the wrong things...
