A complicated book about love, friendship, grief and more. The square root of AWESOME. Well-written and woven with European flair.

DNF at 50 percent. I didn't find this book interesting at all but I tried to give it a chance.

Finally getting into this book. Baked some birthday cupcakes with my #homemadedecades #1980s box. All set for this evening with Birfdae Cëk ice cream from Big Gay Ice Cream. Going out with my sister to see the Bacon Brothers.

These books from my TBR pile all have elements of time travel. Also, the Fourth Doctor would like to offer you a jelly baby.

In honor of the Summer Solstice, I'd like to share one of my favorite summer reads. The Square Root of Summer follows Gottie Oppenheimer, a 17-year-old physics protégée, as she tries to come to terms with growing up and grieving her late grandfather. Oh...and crazy things like black holes appear every now and again to make things more interesting. Gottie spends much of the book in her backyard, so I often found myself doing the same while reading.

Day 12 #riotgrams #summerreads. These are the books I plan to take on my summer vacation. Sadly, I will not be going to the Jersey shore this year. Will probably set up my new beach tent in my mothers back yard and read inside so I don't get sunburned.

I wasn't super into this book until the last third or so. It had an interesting plot, very strong ending, flawed (but mostly likeable) protagonist and some beautiful passages.

I admit to feeling a little confused while reading this book. And not in a fun can't-wait-to-find-out-what-happened way but more like huh? Anyway taking a warm bath which was a perfect way to end a wedding weekend.

Reviewsbylola My husband bought me that same bubble bath (I think? Eucalyptus and something) and I'm not sure I like it. The scent is so strong. I usually get the lavender one. 7y

9/100 The Square Root of Summer by Harriet Reuter Hapgood DNF'd @ page 91

After having this book sat in my room since its release date, and being in the mood for contemporary books, I thought I'd pick it up and give it a go.

Sadly, I couldn't get 100 pages into it. I was so confused with how much it kept jumping around from one thing to another without any explanation

Missusb Yes it's confusing, but ultimately I found Gottie endearing and triumphant. But it was also strange & unsettling. 7y
ReadingSusan Yeah I felt the same way. Confusing and not in a good way. 7y

So interesting and and different and clever. It took me a minute to get into it, but I'm glad I stuck with it. And Hapgood made me fall in love with a character who never existed in the present!! (Grey = fav forever)

This was a book about love, loss, and time travel. It was definitely an interesting way of exploring those topics plus with math and science thrown in. There was also a romance angle as well. Overall, definitely an enjoyable summer read.

I liked this book overall--I did think the science was a little over layman's heads in some parts, but it didn't overrule enjoyment of the book. And I'm a sucker for time travel. Interesting debut and great use of culture to world build. The illustrations set it apart from other novels like it.

Somehow this book perfectly evokes the languid feeling of a long summer. Plus it has maths and wormholes. What's not to love?

This book was a great variation on all the YA I've read before. The science fiction elements gave this book a depth I hadn't been expecting. The relationships between the various characters and Gottie were realistic and authentic and were the reason I read this in one day.

Finally starting this YA, time-travel romance. I've been really excited about it since grabbing it at ALA Midwinter.
