Of Mice and Men | John Steinbeck

Pickpick

I often heard references to this book, and because of the #authoramonth2023 #johnsteinbeck challenge, I now understand all the buzz. George and Lennie travel to the Salinas Valley in California to work on a ranch during the Great Depression. Lennie is a man of tremendous size, but has the mind of a child. George is small and quick, and does his best to protect his friend. Spare, beautiful writing. Tragic. Unforgettable. #1937 #192025

dabbe When I would show the Gary Sinise-John Malcovich movie version after my juniors read it, you could hear sniffles out in the audience, especially from the teenage boys. And they already had read it and knew what was coming! And this one reads almost like a drama, doesn't it? The dialogue is already beautifully written, and each chapter is a new setting. I love this book. ❣️ 2y
DivineDiana @dabbe I can understand. It is heartbreaking on many levels. 💔 2y
Librarybelle Good choice! This is one I have not read, but definitely a true classic 2y

Mystery in White | J Farjeon

Pickpick

A low pick for me. This cozy Golden Age mystery features a group of strangers trapped together in a snowed-in country house over the Christmas holidays. The plot seems a bit far-fetched but it was a fun read for the season.

Librarybelle A fun seasonal read indeed! I may have a copy of this on my shelves… 2y

Out of Africa | Karen Blixen

Pickpick

Blixen writes about her time in Ngong where she in the time around WWI had a coffee farm. She writes about the Africans and the foreigners. I found her thoughts on the differences between Europeans and Africans quite nuanced. I preferred the parts where she spent more time with an episode since some parts were written in really short vignettes.

I bought this book back in 2002 so glad to finally have read it.

SconsinBookyBadger @TricksyTails Carrie being returned by previous patron in nick of time! When I arrived at library it wasn‘t there, perhaps the librarian hadn‘t shelved it yet as I tore through the SK section. The next shelf inspection I'm happy dancing my way to check out. 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻 (edited) 7y

SconsinBookyBadger @DivaDiane it‘s a beautiful collection of poetry. “They May Love All That He Has Chosen and Hate All That He Has Rejected” poem reduced me to tears. 7y

Of Mice and Men | Steinbeck

Huh... Of Mice and Men and The Hobbit were published the same year. Funny I read both in High School and re-read both in the past month.

They couldn't be more different stories.

One I haven't read since High School, and I still remember this one with bittersweet sadness and empathy. Another sad story that once was required reading, but this one always stuck with me and is still pretty powerful as a re-read as an adult.

suvata I agree. It was a completely different experience reading it as an adult. So good! 7y

I have throughly enjoyed re-reading this classic that I haven't read since high school. Lots of fun and many adventures along the way, and yet within one volume so many colorful characters and so much character growth for our burglar. Can't wait to start the trilogy tomorrow with @freyaheart and company.

I haven't read this since I was in High School (1990), joining along with the #LOTRChapterADay read along starting today. (Organized by @freyaheart for anyone interested)

*Also counts as #1937 for anyone working on their #192019 reading challenge (which I first heard of from @Marchpane not long after I joined Litsy)
