I finished this on the last day of August to complete the #authoramonth2023 challenge. It had been sitting on my bookshelves since 1989. It was a struggle for me,but I was determined to finish it to honor Salman Rushdie, who nearly died for writing this book.At first,I was fascinated with the main characters,Gibreel, the movie star/angel and Saladin of the many voices as they fell from the sky. Then it became very strange.I started to lose my way.

Soubhiville Good job finishing and finally getting it off your TBR! 7mo

This elegantly written book spans Victorian times in India and Scotland and modern times in Edinburgh, and three generations of a Scottish family. It is a story of two sisters,Esme and Kitty and a family conspiracy.Esme has been hidden in a psychiatric hospital for 60 years until her Great Niece is notified of her existence. The reader is left to decide if Esme was mentally ill or not. A page turner. Mysterious, sad, shocking! #authoramonth2023

In 1933, William E. Dodd becomes the first American Ambassador to Hitler‘s Germany. He was a mild mannered professor who had studied in Germany. The Germany that he had loved was in the midst of a tremendous change and horror. His daughter,Martha plays a pivotal role,as she becomes popular with the Nazis. A glimpse into the minds of those in power at the time, and what was assumed would just go away. A superb title. #authoramonth2023 #eriklarson

Of Mice and Men | John Steinbeck

I often heard references to this book, and because of the #authoramonth2023 #johnsteinbeck challenge, I now understand all the buzz. George and Lennie travel to the Salinas Valley in California to work on a ranch during the Great Depression. Lennie is a man of tremendous size, but has the mind of a child. George is small and quick, and does his best to protect his friend. Spare, beautiful writing. Tragic. Unforgettable. #1937 #192025

dabbe When I would show the Gary Sinise-John Malcovich movie version after my juniors read it, you could hear sniffles out in the audience, especially from the teenage boys. And they already had read it and knew what was coming! And this one reads almost like a drama, doesn't it? The dialogue is already beautifully written, and each chapter is a new setting. I love this book. ❣️ 13mo
DivineDiana @dabbe I can understand. It is heartbreaking on many levels. 💔 13mo
Librarybelle Good choice! This is one I have not read, but definitely a true classic 13mo

I‘ve read this book three times now. The first time I was in high school and it was the first classic I was actually able to finish. The second time I was struck by the history of the dust bowl and the damage people had done to the land. This time I couldn‘t get over how people treat each other when they‘ve fallen to misfortune. Who knows what will hit me next time. #AuthorAMonth2023

Daisey It is a good one, and I can absolutely see how different aspects would hit differently on successive reads. 13mo

#AuthorAMonth2023 @Soubhiville

I discovered my love for Steinbeck only in the last couple of years. My husband found this set of books at an estate sale last year and surprised me with them. I'm hoping to start Tortilla Flat soon.
