Pippi Longstocking | Astrid Lindgren

Sorry for the bad cover, it‘s part of a best book of the 20th century series.

I grew up watching Pippi on television, the Swedish series from the 60s. So no surprises when it came to what happened, each chapter feels like an episode. I am surprised at how true to the book the series actually was. And after reading the book I actually know how old Pippi is, and it‘s younger than I thought. She‘s 9.

Ruthiella I think I read the book first at about age 9. We watched the Swedish adaptation here in the US in the late 70s and 80s too, dubbed of course. 4mo
dabbe I love Pippi! 🤩 4mo

Always happy when I can join #childrensclassicread2023 challenge! Perfect topic for June! While I appreciate the desire of the author to educate readers about the culture of various parts of the country, the harsh treatment of children and animals at times was disturbing, albeit indicative of the times. Women are portrayed as intelligent and compassionate. The effects of alcoholism on a family is sad. #192025 #1945

I'm glad I discovered this book through #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub. It was a slow start, but I grew increasingly absorbed in the characters' lives as I continued reading. The author provides an insightful look into how people from the different classes of English society dealt with the aftermath of WWII.

CarolynM Lovely review. 13mo
jlhammar I agree, it was so interesting to get a closer look at that particular time and place. Glad you enjoyed it! 13mo
kwmg40 @batsy @jhammar That was definitely what I liked best about the book -- getting a feel of that time and place. I've read a lot of books set during WWII but not many that have explored the difficulties of adjusting to civilian life afterward. 13mo
kwmg40 @Librarybelle I've only just discovered these books myself through the #FurrowedMiddleBrowClub. I especially love the design of the book covers. 13mo

Cannery Row | John Steinbeck

I enjoyed this short novel of Steinbeck's! Honestly going in I was worried, his novels tend to be bleak and have some very difficult passages, but this one set on cannery row was much lighter than his other works I've read, and I fully enjoyed watching the inhabitants of this story cross paths, interact, and watching how things played out from their various perspectives.

Yeah_I_Read I tried to read this immediately after East of Eden which I loved and that was probably a huge mistake. I was jarred by the difference in style so much that I couldn't finish it. Maybe one day I will revisit it 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Yeah_I_Read Yes, we are reading the short novels now and each one is written so very differently! 7y
