When I read this blurb, I knew that I have to read that book. I thought the mother daughter would team up together and make life hard for their social worker. I also thought that their would be some funny scenes in this respect. ALL WRONG.

There‘s no funny scenes and it‘s the mother that does her best to avoid the social worker and keep her daughter inside. By the time I finished I wondered if I had read about the worst mum ever.

Librarybelle Wow! Mantel‘s first book…I was not aware of this! 1y
sarahbarnes This does sound very good! 1y
AnneCecilie @Librarybelle I had no idea this was her debut. That explains some tings, it felt a little jumpy in the beginning and I needed some pages to understand who everyone was. 1y
AnneCecilie @sarahbarahfofarah I was, once I realized it wasn‘t what I thought and was there for what it actually was 1y

Fire Watch | Connie Willis

Mehso-so

I love Connie Willis's novels, but this collection of short stories was a mixed bag. I did enjoy very much the title story, “Fire Watch“, featuring her Oxford time travellers.

This is my #1985 entry for the #192025 challenge. @Librarybelle

Librarybelle Hooray!! My reaction to short story collections is that they are a mix of excellent stories and so-so stories. 2y
kwmg40 @Librarybelle Yes, that's usually the case, isn't it? Occasionally, I do come across a collection that's consistently great (like Alice Munro's). 2y
TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! 2y

So for the #19822022 challenge I decided to finally read the A is for Alibi series! I am absolutely loving them! I love Kinsey‘s attitude and the cases she solves. It‘s a great series so far and I‘m so glad I‘ve started finally. My library does a tailored titles every weekand when I put this series on there, they suggested One for the Money, which I‘ve loved for years, so this series is a perfect fit! #1982 #1985 #1986 #1987

Librarybelle Hooray! I enjoyed A is for Alibi and need to get back to the series! 2y

The book is a mix of different genres that are combined through almost lyrical prose into a story of colonialism, horrors of war - all intertwined with a woman's voice, women's stories from the past and the author's personal perception on femininity, language, the clash of two cultures ... Very good written book with some unforgettable descriptions/scenes of the French invasion in #Algeria

Simona It is worth to read it even just because of the language @batsy She have very thoughtful ways of expressions, and I think that this isn‘t just because of a good Slovenian translation. 2y
Simona @Librarybelle You can find all kinds of genres in this book … from historical to autobiographical moments, to the semi-literary genres. It is good and unusual mix, but it works. 2y
Simona @LeahBergen Thank you 🙏 2y

Mehso-so

I'm not a huge fan of short stories, but I like Stephen King, so I thought I'd read this collection. Some of the stories were really great, some of them were pretty good, and some of them just weren't. The Mist was absolutely my favorite of all the stories! #ReadingThroughTheYears192021 #1985

Bklover I loved The Mist! 4y
CaroPi The mist is one of the strange cases that I like the ending 4y

Finished re-reading this classic tale, this time however I revisited it on audio narrated by Claire Danes....still as powerful and harrowing. Truly a must read!

For those wondering, I wouldn't say the additional content added on to the lecture at the end is worth re-buying if you already have the audio, I enjoyed the afterword by the author & the essay at the very end, but both are brief & most likely available elsewhere. #192019 #1985

Gezemice I just bought this yesterday. Now I am excited! 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice Claire Danes does a great job with the narration I thought. 7y
raelaschoenherr That's a relief to hear! I was annoyed at Audible, actually. I feel like it should have been an update that automatically downloaded to your account if you already owned the Clare Danes version! 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @raelaschoenherr I agree! I almost bought it a few weeks ago, and just missed that trap myself. I'll tag you in another post were I discussed some of the specifics that are in the tiny added portion. 7y
