A fascinating, detailed book about Mandela‘s struggle for freedom- both personal and political.
I didn‘t know much of his life pre-release from jail really. This helped fill in those gaps.
A man that sacrificed everything (including any chance of a normal family life) to try and make things better for millions of others.

Cinfhen Definitely adding this to my list for next year!!! 1y
BarbaraBB I have always wanted to read this but it is sooo long.. so I‘ve kept postponing. Your review is encouraging though (edited) 1y

Not only did this totally live up to the hype, it really surprised me. It has a completely different flavor from any of his comedic content, and a completely different flavor from any other content about apartheid I‘ve read before. So glad I finally got to this one! #Booked2022 #AuthorBornInAfrica @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft @Cinfhen

Cinfhen I think this might be my FAVORITE audiobook!!! It definitely got me hooked on audios!!!!! (edited) 2y

Written in 1959, this classic stands the test of time. Understanding the tragic transition from traditional culture in the Igbo tribe to rampant colonialism is vital. We learn through the eyes of flawed warrior Okonkwo and his family as missionaries and other less benign Europeans start causing havoc. A bit of a slow build, but fierce in the end.

37/22I enjoyed this book about murder and sisters, it was as witty as it was dark. I was listening to it and it felt like it ended very abruptly because I wasn‘t paying attention to how far along it was. But I actually quite liked that. I didn‘t know how it would end but I felt satisfied when it did. #booked2022 #authorborninafrica (Braithwaite was born in Lagos). #192025 #2018

Librarybelle Good choice! I‘ve yet to read this one, but one that works so well for #ReadingAfrica2022 ! @BarbaraBB 2y

#camplitsy. Finally finished! 🤦‍♀️ I really enjoyed this. Not just because of the gorgeous cover and great title (which I adored), but I loved the vibrant writing and language. It‘s a sexy, sultry, messy love story, not for those who find insta-love annoying (I‘m not one of them!) The complicated, intense attraction and connection through personal loss and creativity made sense to me. (Continued in the comments)…

KarenUK ….And I really rooted for Feyi. I connected with all her messiness, her insecurities and self doubt, her walls she put up one minute, only to take impulsive risks the next. Great summery read for me. Seems like I‘m in the minority though! 😂 4 stars for me (but I‘m a #starslut so what do I know! ?🤷‍♀️ (edited) 2y
squirrelbrain It does seem like you‘re in the minority doesn‘t it?! Glad you loved it! 2y

As per the blurb on the front of the book, this is a series of essays from 24 Nigerian writers. As with many books like this, some worked better than others. For me, my favourites were those personal histories that I could also learn from, such as funeral customs, education and visiting the market. There were one or two that were a bit whimsical for me, and read more like short fiction.
