An excellent, timely read about individual and generational trauma which is often inseparable. Also, it‘s a story of hope. Wilkerson is very good at storytelling.

It took me a little bit to settle into this, which very much could have been me and not the book, but once I did, I really liked it. Then main focus is on Ebony in 2019, but we get to know her family and a very special family heirloom. So many black American families don‘t know their history, and I felt like this helped seize history back. And the reader is very good, but I‘m perplexed by the choice to have a white woman read this.
⭐️⭐️⭐️
I had high hopes for this as I loved Black Cake, but I was kind of frustrated with it and coincidences that kept happening.
It‘s not really my kind of book, I prefer heavier literary fiction and science fiction over historical fiction and romantic storylines, but I did enjoy the historical parts more than the modern day parts.
The book is about a jar made by an enslaved potter, a murder, and a wedding that doesn‘t go to plan.

Starting this today for a book club hosted by our local indie bookstore! #bookspinbingo
Wilerson has joined my list of ‘auto-read‘ authors. I loved Black Cake, and while this was not quite as spectacular a read for me, I was sucked in from the beginning and didn‘t want to part from the family when it was over!
She excels at creating characters and family dynamics that draw you in and tug at your heart.
Historical fiction, mystery, generational family drama.
win-win-win!
My only gripe: wth is with the cover art? 🙄

Wasn't super excited about #botm selections but it's my birthday month so I had to get something so that I could get my free birthday book 😁 I liked Black Cake and Good Dirt does sound good so that was the obvious choice for me.
It‘s been almost 3 years since I read & loved Wilkerson‘s debut novel! Her latest centers around the after-effects of trauma. The wealthy Freeman family has a long history, but for Ebby in particular, she feels defined by the tragedy that took her 15 year old brother. Multiple perspectives, covering modern & historical time periods, I‘m not surprised to see this as a #BOTM pick! I didn‘t love it as much as her first, but can‘t wait for her third!

This is the second novel by the author of Black Cake. I may be going against the grain but I much preferred this one - some other early reviewers felt that the old jar featured in this book didn‘t have as much impact as the cake recipe in the first but I liked it.
There was quite a time distance between the tales of slavery (and the jar) and the modern day, which perhaps lessened the impact but the modern-day ⬇️
A story of redemption, forgiveness and family. Where you come from influences who you are in the present. A wonderfully written story with a diverse cast of characters. Highly recommend!
Book 4/100 of the year.
Started this last night just before bed and already gasped at 6%! Have a feeling I will be reading this all weekend… #arc
I loved this quite a lot. Black Cake was better but that was going to be hard to outdo.
