#choosekind my 11-yr old asked me to read this because she is reading it & thought it was good. It is good. And sad, and heartbreaking. I told her I‘m glad I read it, but reading it once is enough, but that it‘s probably a good idea of what middle school is all about. The kids are mean, trying to figure out who they want to be, but that you can always be kind and stay true to you.

Wonder is an amazing and incredible fiction book about a young boy named August (Auggie). Written by R.J. Palacio, this heartwarming book will have you in tears! It is about Auggie‘s disability called craniofacial abnormality and how he cops with life at a new school with it! We see the world through his eyes in this book. You need to read this and witness all of the different emotions along with Auggie!

JessicaO You will love having this book in your classroom! This book can be used for IR and LCs. You can also read it aloud to the class for them to process the story deeper. UDL 2.1 would be best because there are going to be words or phrases that are hard to understand. Scaffold this information for yo it students. ESOL strategy #2 would be great to get the ELL‘s in a small group and really talk about this book in depth for better understanding. (edited) 4y
JessicaO Here is a link from Scholastic that tells you different ways you can use Wonder in your classroom!

Nkaufmann I chose Wonder for my individual reading book so I am even more excited to read it after your post! I agree with you in that ESOL strategy #2 would work with this book as students could get into small groups and talk about what stood out to them in the book, unfamiliar vocabulary words, etc. 4y
bsiqueira What a beautiful story. This book is such a wonderful addition to a classroom and is jam packed with lessons. It would make a great IR. Your UDL and ESOL strategy are perfect! 4y
DrSpalding #choosekind is a movement that you can follow on social media. Teachers have used this # to promote kindness in their classrooms. This book has a powerful message. Your resource is excellent. There is also another resource just for this book! https://wonderthebook.com/books/wonder 4y

“Wonder” By R.J. Palacio is a beautiful and very heartfelt RF read! This book is a New York Times Best Seller and would work great in the classroom as an IR or in groups for an LC. The book is about a young boy named August (Auggie) who was born with a facial deformity and goes to public school for the first time! This book follows through his journey in school and the reader sees the different perspectives of the people around Auggie.

Viviannef UDL principle 2.2 Clarify syntax and structure and ESOL strategy 10 Teach think, pair, and share strategies in cooperative groups. Students will be able to discuss the author's style of writing and the different points of view when the perspective changes throughout the story. 4y
Viviannef https://wonderthebook.com/for-teachers - This website is from the author herself, providing downloadable teacher resources with great questions that can facilitate conversations in LC. It also provides activity sheets and cute ways that students can express #choosekind #ucflae3414su20 4y
DrSpalding You know the books are fabulous when they have their own website. Good use of a quality resource. I have several students that are now teachers that have the #ChooseKind program in their classrooms. 4y

Figured the #choosekind tip of the week was more than appropriate to share here.
If you do it, tag me so I can see a chain of book swaps begin!!

smilingshelves I actually did this! About a month ago, a former student asked to borrow The Art of Racing in the Rain so he could read it before watching the movie. When he saw me Monday, he assured me he would return it soon. I told him he could keep it. He was so excited! 5y

A recipient of the Sunshine State Young Readers award, Wonder is written by R.J. Palacio. A RF about 10 year-old Auggie, who lives in Manhattan. He was born with facial deformity and is starting to attend school. The book take on view points from different characters and could be used for a LC. #ucflae3414su19

SarynaN https://createteachshare.com/2017/03/a-new-favorite-were-all-wonders.html This site includes a printable writing prompt to accompany the book. It asks students to consider how we are all wonders. The book and activity will cover ESOL strategy 36 and UDL 9.3 5y
Kcompton2912 I love the writing prompt you provided in your post. I think this would be a great lesson where a teacher does a RA with the book, follows it with the movie, and then ends with the prompt! The book will definitely challenge the thinking of young readers and there viewpoint of the world/others! 5y
DrSpalding Using great books like this to springboard a writing activity is an excellent idea. We are all wonders! #ChooseKind 5y

365 Days of Wonder: Mr.Browne‘s Book of Precepts written by R.J. Palacio is a fiction book that has inspiring quotes for every day of the year. The quotes range from history, love, friendship, courage, and kindness. This would be a fun thing to do with the class as a bell ringer. We could start the morning by reading a quote and then writing about it or the teacher can simply ask comprehension questions about it. #ucflae3414su19

DeannaP https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Comprehension-Questions-for-365-Days... An ESOL strategy to go with the lesson is to “continually monitor students comprehension” the teacher can do that by having the students write the quote and what they think it means in a journal. 5y
DeannaP An E.D strategy to go with it is to “highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships” since they would be finding the main idea of the quote and comparing it to their background knowledge. 5y
DrSpalding This is such a fabulous book. Did you know there is an app? Its called The Daily Wonder App!

"Choose Kind” is not just a saying, it is a way of life. A amazing and tear jerking F novel by R.J. Palacio that reaches beyond the words on pages an into the heart of the readers. While reading this book, I cried three times and I just want to read it again! I have nothing but praise for little Auggie.
