Short but powerful.

Maleeka, a seventh grader, is being bullied at school because she has dark skin and she wears handmade clothes, among other things. Since her father passed away she had forgotten to see how beautiful and smart she is instead of listening to what others have to say. Maleeka has to learn to see herself through her own eyes, find her voice, and to stay true to herself.

Quite a short/quick story. The dialogue makes this story, it gives you a sense of who the people in the story are. A story of people spending the holidays with their chosen family, a steamy romance, good food, and new beginnings. I enjoyed it.

***I don‘t know about the cover art. The way the characters were described doesn‘t really match the art. Also, there are a few typos, but nothing major.

I enjoyed this romcom so much! After I read Get A Life Chloe Brown I was hooked and knew I had to read the second book in The Brown Sisters‘ series and it did not disappoint. I can‘t wait for the final book in the series to come out. I need to know Eve‘s story.
It was quite steamy, adorable, and just great.

Oh my, I couldn‘t stop reading it once I started and I usually don‘t read romance. I loved the diverse characters. It‘s about a Vietnamese country girl who just wants to make a better life for her family and an autistic Vietnamese-American guy who thinks he can‘t feel/experience emotions. They‘ve both been hurt emotionally, in different ways, so they both feel an aversion to relationships. Nevertheless they must live together for a whole summer.

“It wasn‘t like one of those scenes in a movie, where the princess floats lightly into the waiting hero‘s arms. I was more like an anvil that comes plummeting down on a cartoon character‘s head. I fell, like a graceful barbell, right on top of Neel.”

😆 made me chuckle.
