This did a great job of showing the ways Van Gogh and Gauguin were able to inspire, influence, learn from, teach, and compete with each other during the 9 weeks they lived together, and how it changed and informed each of their work during that period and also going forward. This interplay between artists is something I‘ve always been fascinated by, so I loved reading about this! BUT I found the writing style challenging. 👇🏼

IndoorDame It seemed at times to be narrative nonfiction, and at times to be academic writing without clear transitions between them. This made it hard for me to follow some of the more biographical sections, especially the last few chapters where he traces Vincent‘s spiral into cycles of mania and depression. I think I‘d grab another book if I wanted to read more in depth about his self mutilation and his illness. #bookspin 9mo

I‘m about to start my #bookspin book. I chose it from a “this spine is calling to me” category, but when I opened it I was surprised by my favorite endpapers of all time! I wonder if I should have a “fun endpapers” category 🤔 @TheAromaofBooks

I got “this spine is calling to me” again! this time for my #bookspin slot, and I decided on The Yellow House. My #doublepin was something from my #auldlangspine list. I just started The Vaster Wilds yesterday morning, but I‘m already drawn in. @TheAromaofBooks

#artist #newyearnewbook @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I‘ve been out a bit of a book buying binge lately on books about art and artists. The only question is which one do I read first?

Melismatic Wow - they all look great but the Frida Kahlo cover looks so interesting! 🫶🏻 11mo

The Moon and Sixpence | Somerset Maugham

Mehso-so

Inspired by the life of the painter Paul Gauguin, Maugham charts a fictional tale based in London, Paris, and Tahiti as we learn about the strange and provocative Charles Strickland.
I liked the first half but then the story started to drag and become repetitive. It is a book of its times and hence unnecessarily sexist and racist. Overall I was underwhelmed by this book.

#MayMontage #YellowColor Everyone has a few niche genres, and books about artists lives, especially small circles of artists interacting and fueling each other‘s creativity are my jam! (Can you tell I went to art school?😂) Definitely need to read this! @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

Gissy It sounds an interesting book. Looking forward to read your review. I love this style of painting😍 2y

The Way to Paradise: A Novel | Mario Vargas Llosa

Mehso-so

Two biographies alternate from chapter to chapter. In the 19th century, Flora Tristan, one of the founders of feminism and grandmother of famous painter Paul Gaugain, is fighting for the rights of women and workers. Paul Gaugain discovers his passion for painting and abandons a middle class life in Paris to live in Tahiti, in search for inspiration and creativity in a world still not contamined by Western conceptions.

Moon and Sixpence | Maugham Somerset

“那你到底为什么离开她”
“我想画画”
我直勾勾地盯着他看了老半天,真是难以理解。我想这人准是脑子进水了。你们肯定记得我当时还很年轻理所当然地把他当成了中年人。当时我除了惊讶什么都不记得了。
“可是你都四十岁了呀。”
“所以我才觉得再不画画就晚了。”
