Jack | Marilynne Robinson

Yes, after gushing over Marilynne Robinson‘s writing in Gilead, Home, and Lila, I‘m having to bail on Jack. 74 pages in and he and Della are still in the cemetery….I‘m weary and having difficulty believing this scene and their exchange. #MarilynneRobinson #Gilead #Gileadseries

bnp Same for me. I lived Home & Lila, but list interest in the cemetery 3y
Lesliereads @bnp a bummer, but I‘m kind of glad I‘m not the only one. At least we enjoyed Home and Lila! 🦋 3y

The Testaments: A Novel | Margaret Atwood

Absolutely enjoyable. But, necessary? It was clear to me that The Handmaids Tale needed no sequel, and yet... this book completes what the author begun a long time ago. Atwood dives deep into the darkness of Gilead and the fate of those trapped in it. I was unable to put it down. The story isn‘t great but the different POVs and Aunt Lydia make up for that.

Yikes. It‘s the littlest details that make #Gilead so horrifying.

Switching back to Gilead for short chunks of reading — I‘m starting to feel sleepy and the slow pace of this novel doesn‘t lend itself to long sessions.

rmaclean4 I find I need to switch books often in these read-a-thons! 6y
readtheworld @rmaclean4 Same. Though picking very short books also solves that problem! 6y
rmaclean4 @readtheworld very true! 6y

I‘m currently reading Gilead, which has been on my TBR list for years, and my TBR shelf for about six months. I‘m really enjoying the writing, though I keep waiting for something to happen in terms of plot. If you‘ve read it, what did you think?

#readtheworld #gilead #currentread #marilynnerobinson #paperback

8little_paws I loved it. But there is no plot. It's just a rumination of a older man about the life he'll miss. 6y
readtheworld @8little_paws Ah, that‘s what I was wondering. Thanks! 6y
Carissa-Green-Reads Keep waiting . . . 6y
readtheworld @Carissa-Green-Reads Ha! Sounds like it... 6y
sprainedbrain Nothing big is going to happen, but my gosh I loved this book. ❤️ 6y

Darkwater Secrets | Robin Caroll

Pickpick

This was a bit of a different murder mystery (first in a series). Set in New Orleans at the fictional Darkwater Inn, it is told through 3 characters: Adelaide, the general manager; Dimitri, the owner‘s son and Beau, the detective who investigates the murder. I liked it even though I had guessed the guilty party. There‘s room for these characters to grow and also romance brewing. I‘d like to read future books. 4/5⭐️
Thanks to #NetGalley & #Gilead.

This is a story of three generations from Civil War to the 20th century. Basically a pastor father speaking to his son of the spiritual battles of the American life. Robinson is a gifted writer with beautiful lyrical prose about love and forgiveness. Not for everyone as it is a lot of religious philosophizing. It's not a book with a plot or a real storyline. Enjoyable in some areas - boring in others.

4.5/5 ⭐️'s
I loved this novel, for it's depth, and simplicity. It's celebration of being human, and the exploration of universal truths, as well as the deep and lasting love of a father for his son. It was a much needed reminder that happiness isn't as complicated or difficult to come by as we have a tendency to think. #gilead #marilynnerobinson #bookreview #booksy #literature #bookish #bibliophile #book #bookworm

catebutler @DebReads4fun I was so impressed with this book. And so glad I read it with my book group. I'm currently reading Home, the second in the series. Have you read Home or Lila? 8y
DebReads4fun I have not read Home or Lila yet, but I intend to. Are you enjoying Home? 8y
catebutler @DebReads4fun I am! I love that it parallels the story in Gilead, just from the perspective of a different character. I understand Lila is really good too and her back story is very interesting. 8y
