Suspenseful retelling of Hansel and Gretel with Pirates, redemption arcs and of course an added romance!

Book 4 of 2024.

I think this could have been great if it was longer/more fleshed out. The short story format made it feel too jumbled and confused.

Hansel and Gretel has always been one of my favorite Grimm tales—if you look deep enough, it will tell you a lot about the medieval life in that time. This book has many of the classic magic and cleverness of the old fairy tales; it is a look into the gaps of the siblings‘ lives that we never knew. And it is delightfully gory.

He invites girls to this house, and he reaches down their throats and rips their souls from their bodies, and he traps the souls in cages in the form of doves, to let them rot under his eaves. Then he hacks the girls‘ bodies to pieces to make our supper.

I read this as a companion to the original. Must say I liked Gaiman‘s version better, more atmospheric and descriptive writing. Illustrations were fine.

TheBookHippie I enjoyed this one quite a bit!!! 6mo

My first adult reread of this well known fairy tale classic. I was surprised how short it was and how straightforward the storytelling was. Overall I was more than happy to dip into this book and read some childhood favorites.

#childrensclassicread2023 Even having read a Brothers Grim version before, I hadn‘t read quite the same version as I did this time which has to be one of the coolest things about rereading these old stories. I looked at a bit of the commentary & learned new things about the famine & cannibalism (major ick!) & also that the mother became the stepmother sometime between the 1st & 4th editions (so I guess societal expectations haven‘t changed much)

TheBookHippie I found this one fascinating! Lots of ICK! It‘s a good October read! 6mo
