Comfort Me With Apples | Catherynne M. Valente

Her home is perfect. Arcadia Gardens is perfect. Sophia‘s marriage is perfect. So what could possibly crack her perfect world? Turns out to be a locked vanity drawer.

This was disturbing. From the start, there‘s an unsettling feeling that nothing is as it seems. Not even the plot. This was creepy & dark & clever & beautifully written, but also ultimately unsatisfying. Makes me want to reread Rebecca. 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

Pickpick

This is a low pick for me.

It was a pretty decent #BlueBeard retelling, but I wanted more from it. The villain was a bit wishy washy, the world building needed a bit more explanation, and I didn‘t feel for any of the characters really.

The premise was good though, and it was an easy read!
15 year old Rhea finds herself betrothed to a lord, and discovers that not only is she not the only wife, but they are trapped.

6 short stories that make the story of Rumpelstiltskin more logical by closing up several of the holes in the original story. A fun, quick, read.

Pickpick

Like many of the books I have read for the #FairyTaleReadingChallenge , this one is a bit dark, but Holly Hobbie's beautiful illustrations tend to soften the darkness. And I loved Gretel's ingenuity! A quick and enjoyable read, that I would not hesitate to share with my grandchildren. Thanks, @Charityann for hosting this fun challenge!

Ashlyn returns home from boarding school to find her father going to jail for tax evasion & her mother getting treated for depression. She‘s then sent to a woodland retreat with her cousin, but nothing there‘s going well either!

This was a charming & quick read about a young girl dealing with some really difficult things & discovering her own bravery. Although this didn‘t use as much of the Hansel & Gretel story as I would have liked. 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

Never Let You Go | Katy Regnery

I wasn‘t sure about this #HanselAndGretel inspired one, but I actually became super invested!

It was pretty heavy (especially after another heavy read) with LOTS of trigger warnings (kidnapping, abuse etc) and the MCs were all kinds of messed up. But the way they grew after finding each other, and the “happy ending” were worth the read! As I mentioned I became pretty invested in seeing it through 😂

This was a fairly faithful retelling of #RobinHood for #FairytaleReadingChallenge

I liked it overall, but the large passages of song irritated me a little bit! It was quite interesting to compare key parts of the story to the retelling I read for Robin Hood last year and trying to work out who people were before name changes occurred.

I would have liked more action I think… 😂

This was also my #BookSpin

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! 4mo
