This is another great historical fiction by Jennifer Nielsen. Set in Poland throughout WWII, it follows Lidia from the initial German invasion through the final days of the German occupation. It‘s a harrowing story of those who joined the Polish resistance. I‘ve read stories of the Jews in the Warsaw ghetto, but this was a broader story of resistance throughout the city.

Daisey If you enjoy this story and want another with a Polish setting, I also strongly recommend Sharon Cameron‘s story of Stefania Podgorska, who hid several Jews in her attic during the war. 1mo

Centering around an eccentric historian‘s access to the MC‘s g-grandfather‘s journals, this look at history, ethics, family, myth, community, and spirituality is wrapped in a great story with elegant prose. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad. I highlighted many quotes, but didn‘t want to stop reading long enough to post them. Letter D for #litsyAtoZ, No 1 for #14books14weeks

My first book for #14Books14Weeks. @Liz_M

Tamra Funny, I was just referencing Harrison‘s poetry today! 7mo
Lcsmcat @Tamra I‘ll have to look for his poetry. I‘ve only read his novels, but given how great his prose is I‘m going to fix that. 7mo

MG/YA HF by Nielsen is always a great choice-she‘s written several dealing with teens in WWII who defied Nazi terrorism, based on true events. #Bookspin selection

HF: December 7, 1941 Pearl Harbor. Frank and Stanley are fast friends with hopes and dreams - they are touring a battleship in the harbor when the world explodes, the day Japan 🇯🇵 bombed US waters. Thoughtful and multifaceted rendering of the story within a story.

In the 1970's and 1980's, Jim Harrison wrote non-fiction articles for a variety of publications including Playboy, Sports Illustrated, Esquire, The Nation and others. They are gathered in this wonderful collection to remind us of the poetic and powerful workings of his incredible mind and adventurous spirit. The essays are divided into three sections - Food, Travel and Sport, and Literary Matters. Highly recommended.

A magnificent long collection of poems by the always impressive Jim Harrison. Published in 1998, it obviously does not include his later work before his death, so it serves as a wonderful introduction to his earlier poetry and his constant evolution, always trying new forms to express his worldview. Highest recommendation.

A beautiful collection by a wonderful poet. "The Theory & Practice of Rivers" is a long poem that takes up about half the book and one of Harrison's masterpieces. Highly recommended.

I‘m sitting on my back deck, drinking beer, reading poems. This is one of my favorite things in the world.
