Day 4 of #holidaygratitudechallenge I am so excited about cookies! I love cookies anyway, but there is something special about cookies around the holidays!

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I love peppermint bark!! 😋 that has to be my favorite (it was hard to pick something, honestly, as I wolf down garbage the entire month of December) 6y
Ray3 I love the little Debbie Christmas tree cakes. I try to buy about 10 boxes to get me through a little bit after Christmas 6y
AsYouWish @Ray3 have you tried the new Christmas trees that are made with spice cake? 6y
Ray3 No not yet I will have to now! 6y

Definitely leftovers sandwiches. Which requires that I ask, is it a sandwich if it only has one slice of bread? What if it‘s tube-shaped? I‘ll leave sandwich cube theory to others, just let me have my turkey, stuffing, gravy, and, in this case, pomegranate open-faced sandwich in peace (jellied cranberry sauce would generally be the topper, but the pom arils are close-tasting and delicious, and add a bit of crunch) #holidaygratitudechallenge

julesG Since German bread is generally NOT square in shape and we seldom top a slice of bread off with another slice of bread, this is a sandwich in my world. 6y
kgriffith @julesG Noted! I feel like I should keep track of answers somewhere 😏 6y
brilliantglow I don't think the shape of the bread matters. However, where I live we refer to this kind of sandwhich with only one piece of bread, as an open-faced sandwhich. 6y

julesG @brilliantglow Yep, that would work. 6y
julesG Cube rule is hilarious! Thanks for sharing! 6y
brandybear22 I‘m pretty sure this is toast. But to be sure, I‘m available to inspect and sample. I especially enjoy turkey with cranberry. 6y
LauraBeth This simplicity of this makes it perfect 👌 6y
kgriffith @brandybear22 it‘s been confirmed that I will be human-food-disposal-free from tomorrow til Thursday, and my plan for today includes portioning that turkey I bought on a whim and making a buttermilk brine to soak the breast in for a day or so, so leftovers will be available probably before Christmas. 😉 (edited) 6y

Stollen!
It's a German speciality eaten at Christmas time. Although I know how to make it, just like Christmas biscuits, I don't make it myself.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stollen

Erinsuereads Yummmmmmmmmmm 6y
GingerAntics Oh I‘ve had this. It‘s SO good!!! I got my family to try it after my German teacher brought us some her mother had made (back home in Germany) in 2nd grade. We got it every year after that. 6y
Megabooks We give this to friends and neighbors every year! A local bakery makes them. 6y

jmofo This is one of my favorites! My gramma makes it every year but it‘s always dry so we spread butter on it and eat it with our coffee. 💜 6y
julesG @jmofo I have my great-grandmother's heirloom recipe. The resulting Stollen contains butter, it's brushed regularly with butter (similar to a British Christmas pudding). It's so fluffy and buttery. If it wasn't for the dried fruit, it could be some French pastry. 😁😁😁 6y
jmofo @julesG Oof that sounds magical. 6y
julesG @jmofo But it's a pain to make. No wonder my great-grandmother only made five (😵😵😵) each year and one had to stay in the larder until Easter. This last one was bone dry by then, we dunked it into coffee/tea. 6y

The Stolen Child | Lisa Carey
post image

Most grateful is a tough one when one considers all the life-changing books we discussed earlier this week! So I‘ll go with an author I‘m grateful to know personally, @LisaCarey, whose books are nearly as wonderful as the woman herself. Her latest was one of my top picks of 2016 (in fact I believe it made the top 5s of 3 or 4 of us at LibraryThing, and not because of nepotism) 😏 #holidaygratitudechallenge

The Wake | Neil Gaiman
post image

My little black heart is grateful for the author Neil Gaiman. He is one incredibly talented dude who‘s oeuvre spans comics/graphic novels, adult novels and children stories, audio theatre and film. This man‘s storytelling been with me throughout my life ever since that day I bought The Wake on a whim at B&N.

Tamra Alexander McCall Smith - No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency 💜 6y
SconsinBookyBadger @Tamra I‘m not familiar with Alexander McCall Smith. There‘s a copy of No. 1 Ladies at my local library. I‘ll be checking it out for some weekend reading! 😁 6y
Tamra @AnansiGirl they are comfort reads. The characters develop over the series and they become real in readers‘ minds. VERY different from Gaiman! 😆 (edited) 6y

Reveurs Sarah J Maas, ACO series just wow, rollercoaster ride of emotions for me 6y
SconsinBookyBadger @Reveurs Sarah J Maas is on my tbr. 📚📚Hopefully I‘ll get to reading her series before the mount tbr avalanches on me. 😄 6y
BookBabe Yes! I‘m loving Gaiman too. He is so talented!❤️ 6y
SconsinBookyBadger @BookBabe his talent is astounding and one of few authors I‘ve consistently stuck with. 6y

I used to swear up and down that I hated fantasy but Leigh Bardugo‘s books made me realize that... I totally don‘t. Her books actually opened up an entire genre to me. #holidaygratitudechallenge

Infinite Jest | David Foster Wallace

#holidaygratitudechallenge
When @ErinSueG says challenge, she means it.
There are many authors I am grateful for. I doubt I could think of them all even if I was given a day and a truck of ginko.
I am grateful for David Foster Wallace who ushered me through a painful and disorienting time in my early thirties. He, like so most of my favorite authors, describes the human condition so well, but unlike many of my favorites, you feel he‘s in it too.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I sent you a little “thank you” in the mail for your generous lasagnahoggiveaway, and the tracking shows it made it to your post office on December 16th, and is “awaiting delivery scan.” WHAT?! 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤬🤯 6y
jmofo @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled hahaha. That is very kind of you! 😊 Sometimes tracking says I got a thing and I spend two or three days being anxious about going to the post office to report it wasn‘t delivered and then it shows up. Between an understaffed post office and living in a trailer park it can be a struggle. Thank you! 😬 6y

Secret | Julie Garwood
post image

Day 3 of #holidaygratitudechallenge I have a few authors that I am grateful for, but Julie Garwood is my queen!!!! She has been there for me when I was happy, when I was sad, when I have felt alone, when I needed an escape and when I needed to go 'home'. She has this way of writing that gives me that warm-safe feeling, and makes me want to go to these places and meet these characters and be a part of her worlds! I could go on and on about her.
