Infinite Jest
Infinite Jest | David Foster Wallace
A gargantuan, mind-altering comedy about the Pursuit of Happiness in America set in an addicts' halfway house and a tennis academy, and featuring the most endearingly screwed-up family to come along in recent fiction, Infinite Jest explores essential questions about what entertainment is and why it has come to so dominate our lives; about how our desire for entertainment affects our need to connect with other people; and about what the pleasures we choose say about who we are. Equal parts philosophical quest and screwball comedy, Infinite Jest bends every rule of fiction without sacrificing for a moment its own entertainment value. It is an exuberant, uniquely American exploration of the passions that make us human - and one of those rare books that renew the idea of what a novel can do.

1. Buy a paper copy and keep a pen handy.
2. Two bookmarks (maybe three, after about 250 pages) are helpful.
3. Just read it like any other book. There are dense parts. You'll get through them. Don't force it.
4. The endnotes are important.
5. Te Occidere Possunt Sed Te Edere Non Possunt Nefas Est.

Two-for-one since I missed yesterday. 😬

DAY 11 #BeautifulStranger | Joelle Van Dyne aka P.G.O.A.T.

DAY 12 #Future | Maybe one day I‘ll read more DFW. I‘m still hungover from this nearly 3 years later. 🤯

#MOvember
@Cinfhen

emilyhaldi Lol I don‘t think I will ever have the strength to attempt DFW 2mo
merelybookish @emilyhaldi Me neither. But always impressed by those who do! 2mo
Tex2Flo I finally gave away my Infinite Jest. Having it on the shelf so long seemed like a “failure to launch” kind of situation. Unneeded negativity. 2mo

Cinfhen I remember that buddy read!! Was it nearly 3 years ago?!! Was it with @saresmoore @LauraBeth and @LeahBergen ??? 2mo
britt_brooke @emilyhaldi @merelybookish I never would‘ve gotten through it without the buddy read here, but I loved it. It forces you to pay attention to so many details. It changed me as a reader. 2mo
britt_brooke @Tex2Flo No need to have it staring you down! I bet that was freeing. 😆 I need to do that with a few, tbh. 2mo
britt_brooke @Cinfhen I was trying to remember who all made it through. I know @LeahBergen did! @JenP was the host but she‘s been missing from Litsy for a bit now. Help, Leah! Who else was in that group?! Why is my memory so bad ... 😩 2mo
LeahBergen @britt_brooke @Cinfhen It‘s still one of my proudest accomplishments. 😆😆 I can‘t remember exactly who read it with us either! @Simona @Hooked_on_books , I think? 🤔 2mo
Cinfhen I miss @JenP 😢😢 2mo
LeahBergen @Cinfhen Me, too! 2mo
Hooked_on_books @LeahBergen Yes, I was in it. And I made it through! I remember @britt_brooke ended up loving it but I did not. 🙃 2mo
britt_brooke @Hooked_on_books I remember that now, Holly! Credit to you for finishing it even though you weren‘t a fan. It was tedious. 2mo
BarbaraBB I remember you all reading this when I just discovered Litsy. I was so impressed. I still am. I think such a buddy read is the only way to get though a book like that! 2mo
Simona Yes, you are right @LeahBergen and despite that at the end I wasn‘t enthusiastic, I still often think, especially about complexity of the structure in that book. 2mo
Hamlet You might try DFW‘s essay collections; they are marvelous and accessible. His piece “The View from Mrs. Thompson‘s” on the 9/11 tragedy is particularly worthwhile. 2mo
britt_brooke @Hamlet That‘s a good idea - thanks! 2mo

CallMeIshmael @Jilly6183 it is the moby dick to my Captain Ahab....I have tried and failed several times but I absolutely love it. It‘s odd that I have trouble finishing it. I've just caught up with#INJT2019📘 I didn't have stickers at hand when I started, so I have a log in my phone now, and it's already like a little novel itself😁 I can't say I see all the plot lines yet (is that even possible??), but the conspiracy is surely beginning to outline, and I'm totally into the Incadenza family. I'm loving the translation - lots of stunningly beautiful (or terrific) images for now. @LazyDays, how are you doing?😉

#holidaygratitudechallenge
When @ErinSueG says challenge, she means it.
There are many authors I am grateful for. I doubt I could think of them all even if I was given a day and a truck of ginko.
I am grateful for David Foster Wallace who ushered me through a painful and disorienting time in my early thirties. He, like so most of my favorite authors, describes the human condition so well, but unlike many of my favorites, you feel he‘s in it too.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I sent you a little “thank you” in the mail for your generous lasagnahoggiveaway, and the tracking shows it made it to your post office on December 16th, and is “awaiting delivery scan.” WHAT?! 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤬🤯 13mo
jmofo @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled hahaha. That is very kind of you! 😊 Sometimes tracking says I got a thing and I spend two or three days being anxious about going to the post office to report it wasn‘t delivered and then it shows up. Between an understaffed post office and living in a trailer park it can be a struggle. Thank you! 😬 13mo

#adventrecommends Day 11
I wrote this entire post this morning, then scratched it. I thought posting Infinite Jest would make me seem, well, in a word, snobby. I thought y‘all might think that I am one of those insufferable boors who drag this behemoth of a book around and lord it over others who haven‘t read it. But finally, I am going to post this because: 1) it‘s a damn good book; and 2)David Foster Wallace was such a kind person. Forgive me ⬇️

gradcat ⬇️ (cont.) for going on like this, but I have had that reaction from people. I believe Littens are different, though. If you‘re interested, this book is a slog. It takes a looonnnggg time to finish it. Sometimes you will have to read passages several times. You‘re often flicking back & forth to & from footnotes. But it‘s worth it —it‘s funny, it‘s real, and its examination of American society is still relevant, 20+ years on. Thanks for listening. (edited) 13mo
Cinfhen Credit to you for getting through this one!! It‘s not bragging... it‘s sharing 😁glad this book was a pick for you!!! 13mo

gradcat @Cinfhen Thank you! It took me about a year, off and on. It really is work, but fun at the same time! 😉 13mo
Cinfhen That‘s true dedication 🙌🏻 13mo
jmofo 🖤 I love this book! Not everyone loves every book. Listyfolk are pretty awesome about recognizing that different books grab different people and that timing is also important. Please post the books you love so people who love them too can find you! I‘m going to try to reread this one next year, even though there are countless other books to read. 13mo
Reggie The first year I was on here there was a group on here who tackled this book and not all of them made it. We‘re a bunch of readers who read different books and are pretty supportive of each other. So let your reading flag fly. 13mo
Naj It's not bragging at all. Glad that you enjoyed this because I'm planning to read this next year. Hopefully I'll be able to get through it! 13mo
starlight97 My brother had to read it for school this summer and I was silently marveling at him slowly devouring this big ass book. Sometimes he had to switch to e-book so he could carry it around easier 😄 13mo
gradcat @jmofo @Reggie @Naj @starlight97 Thanks you lovely folks for your supportive comments. I rarely, if ever, read books twice, but I‘m thinking about doing it with this one—slowly, though, so I can read other things at the same time. I, too, bought both the book & ebook—it really was too much to tote around 😁😁 Thanks again, all! 13mo
erinreads I‘m in awe that you read this! Both my husband and I each have a copy with the hopes that we‘ll read it together (you know for moral support! 😹), but it hasn‘t happened yet. Have you read anything else from DFW? I loved The Broom of the System! 13mo
gradcat @erinreads I have read The Broom of the System, + several collections of essays, e.g. A Supposedly Fun Thing I‘ll Never Do Again & Consider the Lobster. But I have not read The Pale King, and if I‘m honest, I think I‘m scared to take on another of his lengthy tomes...but maybe I should try it, instead of attempting a reread of Infinite Jest...hmmm, decisions, decisions, + books aplenty...not a bad problem to have. Btw, I LOVE the hot cocoa!! 🥰💞 13mo
Flaneurette I love IJ but I think my favorite is The Pale King! Go for it! 13mo
Velvetsun Reading this now and loving it. I guess I‘m one of those boorish people because I do lug it around everywhere I go. 😆 (edited) 13mo
gradcat @Flaneurette Thanks for the tip...I guess I will attempt to tackle The Pale King after all 😁 13mo
gradcat @Velvetsun I didn‘t mean to suggest that you were boorish...people said that to me, though. I say let your DFW flag fly!! 😂 (edited) 13mo
Trashcanman I've read this book and I love it! I LOVE IT! The Pale King is Awesome too. @jmofo is spit on. Also, who gives a shit we like what we like. That includes all those books with dudes with no shirts on. If you like it then good for you. 13mo
Trashcanman Spot, spot not spit not spit and no I'm not. I am not! 13mo
gradcat @Trashcanman Yup, I guess I‘ll read the Pale King, too...even though I‘m scared—it‘s such a commitment! You‘re spit on...no, spot on! 😂😂😂 13mo

I may have a dedicated readathon stack for #24in48 but I can‘t skip my daily #InfiniteSummer reading. Today I spent almost two hours embroiled in footnotes, Québécois separatism, and a crazy game of Eschaton. I‘m going to miss my daily instalments when I get to the end. (Why does it have to end? ?) The last time I felt this way was when I read Middlemarch.
But now... on to something lighter for late night reading with wine.

LeahBergen It‘s a crazy ride! 2y
Leniverse @LeahBergen It really is! And I can see why people read it more than once. I half want to reread the first 100-150 pages right now because I‘ve reached parts that really inform on the beginning. 😂 So at least I‘ll have that when I‘m finished. I can do this again in a year or two. 2y

Infinite Jest | David Foster Wallace

‘...almost nothing important that ever happens to you happens because you engineer it. Destiny has no beeper; destiny always leans trenchcoated out of an alley with some sort of Psst that you usually can‘t even hear because you‘re in such a rush to or from something important you‘ve tried to engineer.‘

Pickpick

Initially, I wasn't sure I would like this book (too fragmented, too many drugs), but I ended up finding it both very funny (especially the scenes related to 12-step programs) and permeated with Wallace's characteristic humanism. I read approximately 25 pages a day for about a month and a half, and I highly recommend reading it in manageable chunks because it is pretty dense.

Say what? 🤨🤯 Do I even start looking words up in a dictionary here or just let it wash over me? 😂😅😂

ReadingEnvy I had a running list for my first read. I discovered some words existed and others DFW made up. so letting it wash over you is not a bad strategy! And know you can't catch wvwryfhngm 2y

Velvetsun There are several online tools to help out with IJ word definitions etc. also the book Elegantly Complex helps immensely with section by section analysis (without spoilers for later sections). 13mo
