The God Delusion | Richard Dawkins

Bailedbailed

Ok, I‘m calling it. This book frustrates me. I agree with a lot of what Dawkins says, as I already tend to agree with him, but I simply cannot abide someone who is trying to convert people for whom he has so little respect. He continuously belittles those who believe in God and is grotesquely arrogant. Appropriately, this was my final book for #lrc2018, “a book you started but did not finish.” 🤪

Patchshank I feel the same way about him. He's like a fundamentalist atheist or something. I feel like his time could be better spent than hating on religious people all the time. 6y
Weaponxgirl I also got sick with how he talks about women. I‘m an atheist but I feel he is the sort of person who views themselves as so logical that there is now way they could ever be wrong and if you disagree with him then you are just overly emotional. 6y
Weaponxgirl He thinks he‘s a Vulcan basically 6y

julesG @Weaponxgirl Like that. He'd make a terrible Vulcan, though. Too much hate. - - - I bailed on this one, too. Tried to read it in increments over a few years and just hated it too much to go on. 6y
Weaponxgirl @julesG oh he would, Vulcans aren‘t mean spirited 6y
Moray_Reads @Weaponxgirl @julesG @Patchshank I agree. He has many valid points but the way he makes them is despicable. I think organised religion had a lot to answer for but the way he goes after perfectly ordinary, decent believers is something I cannot get behind, atheist or no. 6y
Hooked_on_books @Patchshank @Weaponxgirl @julesG @Moray_Reads Glad to see I‘m not alone! Though I‘m not surprised, given this thoughtful community. ☺️ 6y

Here are the challenges I didn't finish this year: @Chelleo's #LitsybytheNumbers, @BookRiot's #ReadHarder2018, @JessBerk13's #LRC2018 & #Goodreads2018readingchallenge. On a more positive note, I may have a long way to go to finish but I've read 11 books for @DuckofDoom's #SFFTBRChallenge so at least I'm making progress! Also, I did finish #LitsyAtoZ2018 so I'm happy I can say I accomplished at least one reading goal 😊 #2018WrapUp #SeasonsReadings

LibrarianRyan Woo hoo . We are in the same boat. But you are a good way on SSFTBR. I‘m at 12. Starting 13. 6y
Mdargusch There‘s always 2019. 😂 6y

I just finished The Martian and have now officially completed the Litsy Reading Challenge 2018 right under the wire! It was a great challenge and I read a few books that I otherwise would never have read. The Passage trilogy and Lonesome Dove were some of my favorite reads of the year and were both from genres I usually avoid. Looking forward to 2019 challenges! #LRC2018

I read this for the #LRC2018 for a book that is also a song title but it just wasn‘t for me. Ellen is newly married and runs into her ex-boyfriend which results in her examining the choices she‘s made with her life. While I didn‘t mind the premise, I found her to be way too whiny and unsympathetic. Oh well, on to the next book!

Poe lovers - you have to read this book! Ocker writes of his year long trek searching for Poe all over the world. What he finds, and doesn‘t find, brings him closer to Poe. He tells his tale with humor, and this has really made me want to get in my car and visit Poe haunts. Very enjoyable! This also fits the #travelogue prompt for #LRC . #LRC2018

Exbrarian Not to be confused with Poland 🇵🇱😁 6y
Librarybelle @Exbrarian 🤣🤣🤣 Though, I‘d be interested in reading a travelogue through Poland! 6y

I love discovering new authors through reading challenges. I came across this book looking to fill the #ReadHarder prompt for mystery by POC and really enjoyed it! It was also a nice surprise that it was set in my hometown of Los Angeles as well. This has all the makings of a mystery that I love: a badass female detective, twists, and a little bit of crazy.

I loved this book so so much. It was hard to get into at first because I was anxious of all the injustice I would read (do you guys ever feel like that? I sometimes can‘t watch a show or movie when I know it‘s going to be sad.). But, once I started, I couldn‘t put it down. Such an infuriating but important story. If you haven‘t read it yet, please do!

dsfisher Seriously should be read. May make you angry ( it should) but it‘s an important story. 6y
nelehelen @dsfisher yes! Totally agree. I got so angry while reading i would curse out loud out of nowhere scaring my husband and my dog haha 6y

I suck at writing reviews but here goes. Even though I didn't think it was quite as good as the rest of the Ender Quartet, I think it was a satisfying enough conclusion to the series. It was a bit slow in places, but it still kept me interested until the end. Overall, I enjoyed this book & give it a 3.5/5 stars. This was my "C" pick for #LitsyAtoZ2018 & my "About Space/Astronauts" choice for #LRC2018 (a bit of a stretch, but close enough?)

An oldie but a goodie. I never finished this in school but happy I finally did. My English teacher would be proud. 😆 I didn‘t like the characters too much, but really enjoyed and appreciated the symbolism and themes on wealth, class and corruption in the book - all that I find still so relevant to this day.
