Tor short fiction books are my go-to if I need something to read between other books.
Today I picked up Her Silhouette, Drawn in Water which was a good story. It was not surprising that something at the start was very wrong. The main character is trapped on an alien planet in a endless cave. When she finds a window, the story unfolds. That's all I can tell.

I needed a lot of time to finish this one, and that may be one of the reasons I did not like it so much. At the start, the world is very black and white and although the main character is an adult, it has much of the simplicity of a YA novel. This is neither good nor bad, everyone has to decide for themselves.
I liked how the story ended, though.

This book wants to be YA Star Trek with enough action to get a movie deal, but instead it is just boring. The plot 'twists' are very predictable. The characters represent standard tropes, some die pointlessly because the authors could not make the story go forward any other way. Every chance for real character advancement, or actual, heart-felt drama are thrown down the drain.

The main character is a scientist searching for a cure for his daughter. One night, he is visited by his DNA.
The conclusion is battling poison with poison, bu there were some sections that basically said you are the master of your DNA and can heal yourself by just really wanting it, which left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.
I think the story has a solid foundation, but I am not sure I like the message I get from it.

I really liked this graphic novel. Somehow, on my first read, the text bubbles were missing. The story worked without those, too, so the art is damn expressive. It was better with the full story though.
Horror, monsters only children can see, and a talking stuffed Octopus. I can see myself picking up this and the next book when it is released at my comic book store.

Start digging into our #Buddyread now! But I have a problem: I can't remember how much we decided to read this week 🙈

julesG 5 chapters? And I haven't started yet. Instead I keep checking Litsy, listen to audiobooks, clean, repot plants, water the orchids, sort the custard packages by BB dates. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ It's not a reading slump, it's coping with my anxiety of catching this CoVid thing and ending up in hospital. I try to stay positive, but it's nagging at me. Sorry. I'll catch up. Promise. 4y

I liked the books, it was a kind of complex YA style. Easy to read, story and characters more complex.
It is just not what you would expect. Inspired by Norse mythology - I thought I would see something familiar here, but the story is ONLY inspired.
There are lengths, but overall I recommend them. There should be an English version

Sentient Weapons are a late obsession of mine, as I plan for one of the characters of my DnD group to find one soon. This Novella is about a sentient Sword and it's nameless wielder, going on a pilgrimage.
I liked the authors other novels ok, but this story is definitely his best one so far.
A short and fun read!

night_shift It... never occurred to me that this could be a thing in fiction books. When I think of sentient weapons, the only thing that comes to mind is Excalibur from Soul Eater, which is like the worst character ever lol though, that could be a funny DnD thing.. 4y

The Nevernight Chronicle and I had a problem.l since the beginning. I liked the conclusion much more than Godsgrave, but I feel I have some rather harsh words to say:
This feels like a YA novel that the author desperately tried to make an adult novel. So he introduced lots and lots of cursing, sex, and gore, without understanding that the storyline stays a YA story with tones and tones of YA tropes.
I liked the books, but this annoys me to no end

uwak I felt this way too. I think it would've helped somewhat if Kristoff had aged up the characters more but I think him also being a primarily YA author was also a significant part. 4y
Sweetkokoro This is what has worried me about starting this series, I don‘t want an adult fantasy book with YA tropes or bogged down with sex, gore and violence to “seem adult “. I wasn‘t a fan of his YA book Aurora Burning so it‘s made me hesitant to touch any of his other stuff. Also I have seen a few people with similar complaints you have about this series. 4y

This book is near future sci-fi, Bible retelling, and a hero on a quest in this order. On 900 pages. It is too much. In his better books, Stephenson is lengthy at times, but this felt if he tried to do all of this at once and it just did not work out. The last part could have been good, but I overflew the pages because I just wanted it to end.
Interesting concept, but just too much ideas in one book.

My reading progress this month. I am very unhappy about my reading slump, but I know the reason now:
I have 19 books on my MountTBR challenge, but tons of new ones I really want to dig in - I think I am stretching this one so I don't have to pick an old book over a new, exciting one.
So, I am ditching my #MountTBR challenge. At this stage, all that happens is that the new release become books old ones, repeat.
