It‘s #TBRTuesday again!

So far I‘ve finished all the blacked & whited titles.

I have 2 currently in progress (circled books) and they are on track to be finished before the end of the month. 🤞 because they are buddy reads.

After that it has to be my #NFBuddyRead which will in all likelihood overlap into Dec. So sorry, I‘m behind @BarbaraTheBibliophage I got backed up in my reading, I blame Trump and the hours I spend watching testimony. 🤷‍♀️

BarbaraTheBibliophage No worries. I‘m super behind also. Juggling too much and not feeling the Russia read b/c of how heavy it is. And the news is part of that—both the why and why not. Soon! 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage I completely understand that. I started out strong with Warren‘s, but it just wasn‘t what I wanted to pick up after watching hours of testimony. Those nights I definitely needed more escapism in my reading. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage You want to just swap it out for something else and aim for Dec? 🤔 4y

BarbaraTheBibliophage Same here. I‘ve read a few fantasy books this month, for the first time in ages! 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Besides the NF I need for my (almost finished) challenges yet, I was thinking of making December almost all fantasy/sci-fi. 😂 So I completely understand that! 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds like a plan! I‘m not sure what my December book choices will be ... yet! 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Well if you want to trade out Winter is Coming for a more science-y one, just let me know. We could go End of Ice or I Contain Multitudes, something with less political stressors. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Think we ought to revisit our whole list, in light of the new year? Need the link to the spreadsheet again? 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘ve been updating the ones I read as I went, not sure if any of that carried across to you or not. I haven‘t updated it for any new ones I‘ve acquired though. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Oooh. I‘ll have to double check that. I‘ve definitely acquired a few NF this year!🤪 4y

Pickpick

I picked this book up & started reading it in April, then I put it back down & didn‘t touch it again until Sept. It‘s an in-depth, intense, frustrating succinct & disturbingly accurate history of race relations with African Americans in the U.S. from the start until today. I‘ve read books that focused on parts of the problem, specifics snapshots of time, but this is the first book to brilliantly bring all that together into a complete picture! ⤵️

Riveted_Reader_Melissa A #MustRead and you‘ll be happy to know I‘ll stop spamming your feed with quotes now and go decompress in some fun fiction for a bit. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa #Scarathlon one book completed, again humans are more terrifying and scary than any monster....but hey, one book with a black cover for the #ScaryScavengerHunt later #TeamStoker @TheReadingMermaid 5y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Thank you so much for this wonderful tough book! Sorry it took me so long to make my way through it! #NFBuddyRead (edited) 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m glad you got a lot out of it, @Riveted_Reader_Melissa ! I knew you would, of course. Sorry I haven‘t been here much to discuss as you were spamming my feed! I‘ll try to go back through soon and comment. I‘m sure you and I were struck by similar passages. (i.e., the whole damn book!) 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Exactly! I could have posted almost the whole book it was so good. Sorry I fell way behind on our buddy read along. Any idea what you want to read next? 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Ah, no worries. I need to revisit the list ... unless you have a preference! 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage But probably thinking November not this month ... what do you think? 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Works for me! And November sounds good! @BarbaraTheBibliophage (edited) 5y

A Fighting Chance | Elizabeth Warren

Pickpick

So far my favorite of #ReadTheCandadites. It covers her early life, marriage, teaching, through when Washington came to her for expertise during the financial meltdown. It follows her life as she began to be more public about fighting for A Fighting Chance for everyone up until her run for Senate. It‘s a great candidate read, but also a great read for an insight into Washington from an outsider POV and into the forces that caused the meltdown.

Found the audio of this on Hoopla, and I‘m glad I have the hardback (bought on the cheap) too. Loving her story and ideas already. And I remember seeing her on Jon Stewart way back when, and thinking “I finally understand these issues!” This is my 4th for #readthecandidates !

#nfbuddyread

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I think that was the first time I saw her too! And yes, I immediately understood what she was trying to explain about the banking crisis then. 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Funny thing we have the same memory! You‘re going to love this book. 👊🏻 5y

I am so far behind.... behind on Thursday.
1. A bunch...Becoming, Murderbot, Feminasty, The Color of Law, We‘re Going to Need More Wine
2. Henry, Part II by Shakespeare. I DNF‘d that one
3. Testaments
4. I‘m behind on all of those too! Behind on my Goodreads, #MountTBR, and behind in my #NFBuddyRead with @BarbaraTheBibliophage
5. I‘m sure you‘ve all answered this already! 🤪

TGIF maybe I can catch up some this weekend.

#ThursdaySurvey

BarbaraTheBibliophage I kind of lost track of our May pick ... still interested in it? Shall we aim for June then? 🤪 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Well I still have April‘s to read and May‘s 😂. In April I started White Rage and then put it down for library hold‘s that came in and just never got back to it. May was supposed to be Elizabeth Warren‘s A Fighting Chance and yes, I‘m still interesting in reading that one. Maybe I can catch up with both this June.....if I get going🤪 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Haha. I was mixed up. I thought May was White Rage. But I‘d rather read the Elizabeth Warren next. 5y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage So you‘ve read White Rage, but still have A Fighting Chance to read yet too? 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa No, I haven‘t read either. 🤪 Yet ...! 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Well then, I guess technically I‘m not behind then either. Hahahaha! We both just took a sabbatical there. 🤫 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yeah ... no worries. So the Warren this month?? 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Ok, so do you want to try and read both in June as a catch up month or Elizabeth Warren in June and push White Rage over into July? 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I love that we both posted at the same time “now” 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Haha. Me too. 👊🏻 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage and yes, let‘s do Warren this month and White Rage next month since we have the other Nonfiction books coming this summer too. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage I agree, That works great for me too! 5y

Mehso-so

If you enjoy history, especially about women‘s lives, this is densely populated with information. Its comedic attitude helps the bitter realities go down more easily. I thought it was funny. Until it was just overwhelmingly sad and depressing. The misogyny, people.

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Gezemice Oh well, it‘s no problem really. I think some books are dependent on the timing of when you read them. And I have some weird baggage with all that Victorian language from the quotes. The cult / religion I grew up in used a book full of gobbledygook in that style. Every time I read language like that, I feel blocked and triggered. Just figuring this out after being out of that cult for 30 years. Go figure. 5y
Gezemice @BarbaraTheBibliophage Oh I am sorry! Yes, I understand, I sometimes cannot read some books because they are too painful for some personal reason. Such as rage or calling people names like the r word. I could not finish “The Man Who Took His Wife For a Hat” for that reason. 5y
Gezemice @BarbaraTheBibliophage I am listening to “The Woman in White” and it seems like this book in action - how full a control a husband exerted over his wife, and how much a woman was to the mercy of men - guardians, husbands - is at the core of this otherwise exciting mystery. 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Gezemice It‘s all good. I sold the book to my fav used book seller and have moved on! 🤪 Thanks for the heads up on The Woman in White. I‘ve got it on my Audible shelf—now I know to wait for a while before tackling it! (edited) 5y

After finishing this book, this still stands out to me - under a bajillion layers of clothing, the Victorian lady went commando in the crotch area, like Paris Hilton. It apparently had to do with the impossibility of lifting those skirts to go to the bathroom. Who would have thunk?
#nfbuddyread @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Right, can‘t get all those layers off in a hurry! It made me think of the old one piece long underwear with a seat flap. 5y
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Just to think they did not even use much during their periods! Madness! And the comment about the Moulin Rouge... I had no idea! 5y
Slajaunie 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 5y
See All 27 Comments
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice Yes, I honestly had never thought of that either....my innocent self thought it was all those high kicks and ankles and legs showing, like the Rockettes.🤪😱😂 5y
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yep, they always tell you that the sight of an ankle was scandalous. But ne thinks a lady falling over was way more scandalous back then than it would be now... I wonder if the period costumes in movies allow the ladies to go to the bathroom... 5y
Crazeedi This looks like a rather interesting book!! 5y
Gezemice @Crazeedi Well, who would not be interested in crotchless drawers? 😉 5y
Crazeedi @Gezemice exactly, lol😁😁 5y
GingerAntics Well you also have to remember, underpants are a modern invention. No one worn them, for the reasons we now wear them, until rather recently. Probably the last 100 years-ish. 5y
Gezemice @GingerAntics I did not know that, but gross. 5y
GingerAntics 🤣😂🤣 actually, underpants aren‘t even universal. When you can barely afford clothes, underpants aren‘t really important. Most countries still don‘t wear underpants. It‘s a western thing, really. Why is it gross? It‘s actually healthier, especially for females, to not wear them. They just create humidity where you really don‘t want it. 5y
Gezemice @GingerAntics It is amazing to have historians around. Love it! But still gross. All sorts of fluids leak out if you are not wearing them. And get on your outer clothes. And things you might sit on. Which might get into your lady parts. And who knows who sat there before... Ugh. Nope, gross, thank you! Although I concede the humidity thing in hot climates. I did do some googling though... and tgey do wear loin cloths! 5y
GingerAntics Yeah, loin cloths do sometimes function as something similar. Someone dared me to run commando once, dude it was freeing. No wedgie and absolutely everything evaporates through the “cool 360” wicking fabric. 😆 when it‘s too cold I don‘t do it, but especially when it‘s 100 degrees outside, it‘s a game changer. 5y
GingerAntics Where are you sitting with no trousers/jeans/skirts on that you‘re concerned with who sat there last? 😂 5y
Gezemice @GingerAntics I‘ll just call you Paris Hilton from now on. 😉 5y
Gezemice @GingerAntics I think most of my clothes would feel gross after I sat down and then I got up... Also, miniskirts! And if you are wearing your jeans without underwear, you better wash it every day. I don‘t. Not to mention the clothes that are dry clean only. As far as sitting, this explains why women in India who are menstrating are banished to the grass hut. Tgey sit on the floor while cooking!! 5y
Gezemice @GingerAntics When I had to wear pantyhose to work (Victorians were not the only ones with torturous underwear) I did the concession to stockings with garters and long, loose skirts in the summer months, and indeed it was freeing. But that‘s as far as I got in that arena... I am just glad pantyhose is mostly a thing of the past. (edited) 5y
GingerAntics Oh I would never do jeans, that would be a bit rough, I would think. I generally wear underwear, I just don‘t find anything wrong with choosing not to. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I don‘t know about the mini skirt thing. If your skirt is so short it doesn‘t cover your butt when you sit, it‘s probably too short. 5y
GingerAntics Oh god I hate pantyhose. I must be allergic to something in those and tights. They always made me itch. The pantyhose less than the tights, but still. 5y
Gezemice @GingerAntics Miniskirts are long enough to sit. But the view... 5y
Gezemice @GingerAntics It‘s the material - pantyhose makes you sweat. I hated the smell of my own feet! I never had such smelly feet in socks or bare feet. Tights don‘t give me a problem if they are mostly cotton, but all sythetics is bad. 5y
GingerAntics I‘ll give you that on the view. Yeah. That would be creepy. Pantyhose do make you smell weird. I remember that. I don‘t know if I ever had cotton tights. I probably would have been okay with those...maybe. It didn‘t help that my grandmother insisted I wear tights, so to “help” me she would lather me with lotion and then put baby powder on top. I was basically pasted into these things. It was gross. 5y
Gezemice @GingerAntics Ouch! Thankfully no one insisted that I wear tights as a child. I do it occasionally nowadays although I am mostly for jeans. But they go well with a miniskirt in the winter. I would never wear them on their own like so many do nowadays. I feel like that‘s too much public info about your butt. 5y
GingerAntics We may be talking about two different things. I‘ve never seen anyone wear just tights (like pantyhose but thicker, and very popular for little girls in winter when dresses are required - I had to wear them at Christmas and for my First Communion). Leggings are the thin, stretchy pants things. People are wearing leggings alone now, especially the workout ones. I love how now they‘re being called “jeggings.” No idea what the hell is up with that. 5y
Gezemice @GingerAntics Well they are the same thing here. Kinda confusing. Jeggings are keggings that are jeans patterned or jeans material. 5y
GingerAntics 🤦🏼‍♀️ dear god why smh 5y

I quite enjoyed this snarky look at the past, It‘s so interesting to look into a past we continually romanticize (and some what to return to those glorified eras), but I love these looks back with modern eyes, and the stark reminder that not everything was rose-tinted. Life was hard and progress, with the science, knowledge, and understanding that created it, isn‘t something we should ever wish away.

#NFBuddyRead

Gezemice I thought it was great that it was written with lots of humor. It would have been rather depressing otherwise. On the other hand, we don‘t normally get the lowdown on what it was really like in any historical era. I am quite sure the Tudor court was way worse. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice I‘m betting the further back, definitely...then you were beheaded if you didn‘t produce a male heir, because of course, it was the lady‘s fault. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice But yes, the humor bit about outing the era‘s issues to a person of the modern era really worked for me. It reminded me a bit of Anthony Bourdain‘s Typhoid Mary book, historical and honest, but snarky and fun as well. (edited) 5y
See All 18 Comments
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Typhoid Mary sounds fun, did not know it was humorous. But Get Well Soon was about plagues, and it was humorous, too, even had Typhoid Mary in it! It is interesting that many choose humor to talk of disgusting things. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice I think it‘s a way to make them more palatable. I‘ll definitely have to check out Get Well Soon. I wouldn‘t say Typhoid Mary was meant to be humorous, but the author‘s snark and as a cook putting himself in her shoes just made it a great take on an otherwise heavy subject. 5y
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Kitchen Confidential is on my list. He sounds like a good author to check out. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice It‘s on my long list too. 5y
Megabooks Hey! If y‘all do any more of these, can I join in? (edited) 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Megabooks You most definitely can! We are running a bit behind, this was March‘s pick...April‘s book is White Rage which we‘ll get to, hopefully before May.🤞 5y
Megabooks @Riveted_Reader_Melissa My library doesn‘t have that, but I‘ve requested it. It was on my TBR already! 👍🏻 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Megabooks Great! That‘s actually how @BarbaraTheBibliophage and I made our list when we started this Nonfiction books that had been sitting on our shelves and TBR lists for way too long. I‘m so happy you are interested in joining in! 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I wish I‘d been able to keep my feelings on the humorous side. After about 100 pages, I just got depressed for all these women. And also for how far we haven‘t come. Sure, we aren‘t forced to live in a filthy house with dirt floors (although globally, plenty of women still do). But the misogyny was just utterly overwhelming for me. I wanted to cry, even though the author was trying to make me laugh. 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Megabooks Yes, please join us! I can invite you and @Gezemice to the Google doc we have with our list. As long as I remember after I get home from work today ... 🤪 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Gezemice I thought Bourdain‘s Typhoid Mary was funnier and less forced. It was also shorter, which worked in its favor. I‘ve listened to him narrate his book Medium Raw, and loved it. 5y
Gezemice @BarbaraTheBibliophage An invite would be great! Thank you! And it is lovely for you to join, @Megabooks ! (edited) 5y
Gezemice @BarbaraTheBibliophage I definitely understand that some books just make us upset. I like history and I know this is part of history and I can deal with it. I am less able to deal with current things - so I will be skipping White Rage. I am quite ok with Victorian mysogyny but current rage about anything is too real. I am trying to block it out but still finds its way in daily... I am rather for finding peace nowadays @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice I can understand that...I‘ve been trying to balance by alternating around. I don‘t expect every book to be for ever one. 5y
Megabooks @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Thank you for the warm welcome! 🥰 I didn‘t find Typhoid Mary funny as much as touching, but it‘s been about 10 years since I‘ve read it. The audiobook of Unmentionable makes it a bit more fun than the print, but you miss out on the illustrations. I‘m with Marta as far as being able to digest far past struggles better than current ones. 5y
