A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER An unlikely political star tells the inspiring story of the two-decade journey that taught her how Washington really worksand really doesn'tin A Fighting Chance As a child in small-town Oklahoma, Elizabeth Warren yearned to go to college and then become an elementary school teacheran ambitious goal, given her family's modest means. Early marriage and motherhood seemed to put even that dream out of reach, but fifteen years later she was a distinguished law professor with a deep understanding of why people go bankrupt. Then came the phone call that changed her life: could she come to Washington DC to help advise Congress on rewriting the bankruptcy laws? Thus began an impolite education into the bare-knuckled, often dysfunctional ways of Washington. She fought for better bankruptcy laws for ten years and lost. She tried to hold the federal government accountable during the financial crisis but became a target of the big banks. She came up with the idea for a new agency designed to protect consumers from predatory bankers and was denied the opportunity to run it. Finally, at age 62, she decided to run for elective office and won the most competitiveand watchedSenate race in the country. In this passionate, funny, rabble-rousing book, Warren shows why she has chosen to fight tooth and nail for the middle classand why she has become a hero to all those who believe that America's government can and must do better for working families.

I took teaching seriously. The students who showed up in my classroom would soon graduate and go out in the world with incredible power, perhaps more than they realized. They would handle other people‘s money, other people‘s businesses, other peoples lives.

⬆️If legislators actually saw their jobs as ‘handling other people‘s lives‘ maybe they‘d do a better job...

And there was one more question I‘ve never thought about before: What the heck was Congress doing passing laws if they didn‘t actually know what was going on?

Thank you for asking the million dollar question, Senator!

Elizabeth Warren is an inspiration. This was the first book of hers that I‘ve read and it was packed full of interesting policy detail (seriously), family stories, personal experiences and work challenges. Highly recommend for anyone wanting a behind the scenes look at how she became a Senator. #nonfiction #biography #political

So far my favorite of #ReadTheCandadites. It covers her early life, marriage, teaching, through when Washington came to her for expertise during the financial meltdown. It follows her life as she began to be more public about fighting for A Fighting Chance for everyone up until her run for Senate. It‘s a great candidate read, but also a great read for an insight into Washington from an outsider POV and into the forces that caused the meltdown.

I love these finding her feet stories (the bad news from Dan stories) it‘s great to get a peek before she was running and/or familiar with Washington to see how she learned the ropes to navigate the quagmire that is inside Washington.

It‘s such a different feel than the other #ReadTheCandidates books I‘ve read, that are all looking back at their success on current issues, it‘s refreshing to hear her talk about the process, even when it‘s bad.

BarbaraTheBibliophage She feels like a “real person“ to me, unlike some more “career politicians“ on the list. I'm a WAY bigger fan since reading this book. 5y

AnneCecilie You read a lot of books that make me angry, but in a good way 😊 Is this a memoir? 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @AnneCecilie Yes it is! It covers her up until she ran for Senate. It was published in 2014, so it‘s a little more involved than the other #ReadTheCandidates books I‘ve been trying to squeeze in this year. It‘s focus is more how she got sucked into politics from teaching, and the financial meltdown and what was done, both right & wrong. It‘s very enlightening! So make you mad, but you learn a lot! 5y

Love that quote! Because I feel that way often... if it‘s for one group it‘s an incentive, it‘s great, it will boost the economy....for the other half it‘s a giveaway and an entitlement and they are unworthy. What we give away as a tax cut for the wealthy, we could not possibly give to the 99% in say education, healthcare, infrastructure, etc.

The hypocrisy drives me crazy too.🤦‍♀️

BarbaraTheBibliophage I tried to read every word in the settlement papers when my ex and I bought our first house (1993). The people from the settlement company were pissed at the time I spent. And my ex thought I was an idiot for doing it. (That behavior didn't help our marriage.) But my dad taught me to read contracts thoroughly, and what are mortgage docs but a giant contract? No one EVER reads every word of them. Ever. So it just makes me livid when I hear this. 5y

...”stopped happening in the 1970‘s. For the middle class, wages (adjusted for inflation) has remained stagnant for an entire generation.

Other things being equal, the middle class might have made it through-no richer than their parents, but no poorer either. But other things weren‘t equal, because costs went up for stuff that was a lot harder to live without, like health care and education.”

So stopping buying the story about lazy GenX Y or Z

wanderinglynn Yes, it‘s harder to get ahead when wages, for the most part, have remained relatively stagnant, but cost of living keeps exponentially increasing. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @wanderinglynn Exactly... but I‘m already hearing the comments about how lazy the younger generation is about wanting help with college loans, etc.... the memes and commercials are already starting...trying to make it an Us versus a lazier them. 5y
wanderinglynn Oh I know! People who are all, “they borrowed the money, they should pay it back” drives me mad. These kids are stuck between a hard place and a harder place. You can‘t get a job without a college degree, but college has become ridiculously expensive. You can‘t “shop” for more competitive rates (like you can for a car or home mortgage). You can‘t refinance student loans (at least not easily). So they‘re stuck. 5y

wanderinglynn And a trillion dollars in student loan debt. Think how the economy might boom if all those funds were free to do things like buy houses, invest in the stock market, buy a car. (edited) 5y

This book so completely outlines the buildup to the financial collapse, and all before it happened. And also all because the government was listening to the banks instead of the experts.

audraelizabeth I know for a fact as the daughter of a bank employee, the government doesnt admit that they mandated banks make subprime mortgages knowing what the end result would be. The government still makes banks justify every denial and why they arent lending to more minorities which in a rural, predominately white area is a tad hard. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @audraelizabeth I believe it, in this she chronicles how they created a commission to study the bankruptcy issue, and while the study was going on the big banks wrote their own policy and shopped it around, and eventually theirs is the one that passed and became law. So there is a lot of shenanigans going on behind the scenes between the big banks and government...that I‘m sure are hurting little banks and people equally. It seems to work the.... 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...same way between big businesses and government too, with policies that hurt both small businesses and individuals. 5y
See All 7 Comments
audraelizabeth @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Agreed, I live near a Dupont plant that made teflon and the things they were and are allowed to do is insane to me. When water eats through a faucet in just a few years. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @audraelizabeth I think it‘s all the same problem, the big mega-companies (banks included) are hiring the lobbyists and writing the laws to make life easiest and most profitable for them, and who cares about the consequences to the average citizen or small business....anything that happens to them was their own fault...they were too lazy, not smart enough, why‘d they live there, etc , etc. the rules are stacked against them, but when they fail.. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...they get blamed and the big banks/farms/companies get bailed out. So for them the system keeps working, while everyone else declares bankruptcy, closes, etc 5y

Elizabeth Warren is a fighter, whether in her personal life or for middle class Americans. From the very beginning of her law career, she‘s been researching and making a difference for regular folks like you and me. I appreciated how she discussed complex economic concepts without being snoozy, or making me feel dumb. Very authentic. 4.5 stars

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m enjoying it too! She has a great way of making complex things very understandable and relatable. 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I agree. I also appreciated how detailed her footnotes were—proves she‘s not just pulling her campaign positions from someone else‘s playbook (or from thin air). 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage What I also like about this one, is it was obviously written long before she was planning to run, so it feels more personal than some of those that put out a book at the same time they were running, they seem to be a bit less personal and more outlining their qualifications and platform/policy plans...this one comes across much more personal. 5y
See All 12 Comments
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Well said and I absolutely agree. 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I also thought Mayor Pete‘s was more personal. Definitely not Sanders. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Agreed, Kamala Harris was similar to his....personal, but I felt like they were just sharing the parts of their story that frame their electability. This one is a bit more personal, and includes heartache and tears....not something Presidential candidates usually share. They tend to steer away from things too vulnerable. 5y
alisiakae I really liked this book when I read it a few years ago, and learned a lot from it. I really admire Warren. 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Again, that‘s just how I feel. The candidacy-oriented books have to be taken with a big grain of salt. But any memoir is an engineered history, and not the complete story. 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft I admire her too. She‘s followed a different path than so many of the 2020 candidates. It makes her more like me than most politicians also, and that‘s something I value. (edited) 5y

Elizabeth Warren's policy initiatives are crushing it. She speaks truth to corrupt power. I am a fervent supporter of her campaign for president. She is outspoken, whip smart, and takes no shit. This autobiography is an inspiring portrait of a college dropout who became a Harvard professor, the daughter of a janitor who became a senator. I am so excited for her candidacy and hope ya'll dig in. 2020 is right around the corner! The future is now.

Weaponxgirl Is she the one who‘s refusing to do Fox News townhall events? (I‘m a Brit excuse the ignorance) because everything that was said about that was amazing! 6y

I didn't know much about Warren, besides that she's fiery and down on big banks, but I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed getting to know her in this book. She grew up poor in Oklahoma and went to college against her parents wishes because she felt the drum beat of NEEDING to learn. I relate so much to that. She really cares about the individuals who make up America and she wants the best for the middle class. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #ReadTheCandidates

Book 2 for my #ReadTheCandidates challenge. Confession: I didn‘t care much for Elizabeth Warren prior to reading this book. I didn‘t know much about her positions or her work and I hadn‘t really liked what I had seen of her speaking. This book really changed my mind!! She truly cares about her constituents and the ways people are hurt financially by greedy banks and lenders. She is also extremely smart and has oodles of life experience

MyNamesParadise Admittedly her voice annoyed me a lot before I listened to the audiobook of This Fight is Our Fight and she narrates it! It made me become a huge Warren fan! She‘s passionate and she cares! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yes, I‘ve liked her since I first saw her on The Daily Show, long before she was a politician. She had been on then fighting against the big banks and talking to him after the financial collapse in favor of more meaningful regulation....I think because of that stance she isn‘t very popular with the status quo powers that be, and probably never will be. 6y
