Pickpick

3.5/5
I'd say it's a pick. It was really interesting to read Jewish love poetry, both towards women and men, and some were truly inspiring. Others on the other hand were too "modern" (or less poetry-style, let's say) for me. The book of course begins with the Song of Songs, which is absolutely stunning, but Jewish love poetry didn't stop there

What a beautiful collection of poems!

Going into this, I was only vaguely familiar with Rumi and his poetry. I was always curious about his work and I‘m happy I finally read it.

I love that the translator gave a ton of context to the poems. The book opens with notes on the transliteration, Rumi‘s life, and on the poems.

CatLass007 When I was in the 8th grade our West Virginia History assigned each of us to memorize and recite one of two poems. We just counted off 1-2, 1-2, and all the ones had to learn Joyce Kilmer‘s “Trees” and all the twos had to learn “Woodsman, Spare That Tree,” which was more than twice as long. I don‘t remember the poet. Then she started giving us extra credit if we learned and recited both poems. The verses from “Woodsman, Spare That Tree” (cont)⬇️ 2w

CatLass007 are right at the edge of my memory. I feel like I could recite it if I could just reach out and touch the words. I was just about to say that I can‘t even imagine remembering “Trees” but I just remembered the first line. I‘m not sure I could remember any more than that. It‘s been 50 years! 2w
dabbe @CatLass007 What a lovely story! I believe there is such a power in memorizing poetry or a monologue from something like a Shakespearean play. I still can recite “Immense et Rouge“ by Jacques Prévert because of my French teacher having us recite a poem in French! 🤩 2w

This wasn't a bad collection but it also didn't WOW me. This felt more like a personal work, poetry written to commemorate Mary Oliver's pet dogs.

Doppoetry She talks in detail about letting dogs roam free, which has its issues. (The dog's personal safety, other people's safety etc)

She also projects her own opinions through the perspective of her pets, which felt a bit unserious.

Doppoetry I am of the opinion that: If you want to say something, say it with your whole chest, instead of using someone or something as a mouthpiece 1mo

This was a nice collection of poetry and two Essays about nature, and more specifically various species of birds. I enjoyed most of them, but my favorite was “Wild Geese“

My only criticism is reading through her second essay about finding an injured gull, and instead of taking it to a wildlife facility or the vet, she and her partner started caring for it. It isn't what you fo with injured wildlife. You don't keep them as pets.

Doppoetry She describes in detail how the gull was improving but at the same time slowly dying, how it's limbs decayed and how they tried to kill it gently. The animal lover in me was screaming at the literal animal abuse.

I know it's a spoiler but I would rather it not unpleasantly surprise other readers as it did me.
