I found this book about jellyfish completely fascinating. The author has the unique perspective of having been trained in the sciences but eventually deciding to pursue writing instead, so this is much more “science-y” than one would expect from a journalist but not such hard science writing as to cure insomnia. I‘m using it for #Japan for #ReadingAsia2020, but it works for #Israel as well.

BarbaraBB You are flying through your books! 👍🏽 3y
CaffeineAndCandy Oh wow look at the mini bookstore!💜💜💜 3y

Kyung and Gillian are facing financial issues when suddenly a horrific crime befalls Kyung‘s parents. What follows is a tragic, devastating crumbling of the family, seen from Kyung‘s perspective. This book is masterful—in a lesser writer‘s hands it may well have seemed silly or too much. But this is just heart-wrenching. So, so good.

BarbaraBB Fab review. Is it set in Asia? 3y
Cinfhen Happy New Year, Holly 💜☮️ 3y
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB No, Massachusetts. The parents are immigrants from Korea. That fact plays a role, but one that‘s woven in rather than the focus of the narrative. 3y

Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB It‘s so good! The author was born in South Korea, so it could count for that challenge. 3y

I created my own “challenge” for 2020 with monthly themes and for the most part, it worked well, giving me just enough structure for when I couldn‘t decide what to read next. I‘m creating a new one for 2021, but I also signed up for #readingasia2021 and #booked2021 because the 2020 versions looked like so much fun, I was a little sad I didn‘t try them. I probably won‘t finish either, but I couldn‘t stand to be left out again. #fomo is real. 🤣🤣

BarbaraBB Happy you‘re joining us! The fun is in the reading and sharing ideas, hardly anyone finishes it 😄💕 3y
Librarybelle Agree with @BarbaraBB ! 3y

DGRachel @Hooked_on_books I really wish I had done Reading Europe, but I was determined not to pressure myself with any reading challenges this year. I have lots of European options already on my shelves - Asia? Not so much. 😳 3y

This was an interesting but often tedious short book written by an English journalist in the 1990s—the height of the Balkan crises. In a way it is dated, much has changed, but this book chronicles why & how this region split into a myriad of small countries. I read it for #readingeurope2020 #Montenegro and I certainly learned more about that country than I would have thought. The book is peppered with references, plus a chapter devoted to it & ⬇️

Texreader a conclusion that ties up a loose end from his visit to Montenegro. Also using this for whichever readathons are relevant for #scarathlon #teamslaughter #screamathon #sbooktober #gothtober #ripreadathon #trickortreadathon #nameinthetitle #ghostathon #gothicreadathon #slaughterthon @Clwojick @4thhouseontheleft 3y

BarbaraBB Your choices have been so helpful! Will you be joining us for #ReadingAsia2020? I hope so! 3y
Texreader @BarbaraBB I‘d like to but it depends on how many countries there are. All those stans may be my undoing. I‘m hoping to catch up a number of series I‘ve got started that have taken a backseat to 2020. Do y‘all have some sources for lists of countries? Maybe I‘ll do it but not be so OCD-ish about it? 😉 @Librarybelle (edited) 3y
BarbaraBB Lol, No need to be so OCD-ish although I totally understand 😀. @Librarybelle shares some good lists of countries in the Google form. Personally I was surprised how many countries I can cover with books on my shelves: 18! Among them 2 stans (Afghani and Paki). Three others will be challenging (Tadjiki, Turkmeni and Kyrgyz) I think! However, Kazach we did for Europe 😅 3y
Librarybelle @Texreader @BarbaraBB I am doing horribly with Europe this year, but of course I‘m already thinking about Asia next year! I‘m telling myself that I don‘t have to be OCD about book choices and getting a challenge accomplished, but my planning side of the brain is going absolutely crazy with no plan, haha! 3y
BarbaraBB I love the planning better than the result 😂 @Librarybelle 3y
