Relatable. At least we aren‘t dipping our masks in vinegar this time or chewing garlic... 🤔 #Hamilton #RonChernow #Biography #History

alisiakae I remember reading that section when I read this book, but 2020‘s pandemic definitely puts a different spin on it! 4y
Brooke_H @4thhouseontheleft Also so interesting that the Federalists and the Republicans are making how to treat the pandemic so political! Nothing changes! 😂 4y
K.Wielechowski I just recovered from covid and couldn‘t smell vinegar so that wouldn‘t be so bad for people who have it 😂 4y

Brooke_H @K.Wielechowski Oh I‘m so happy you‘ve recovered!! How awful for you! 4y
K.Wielechowski @Brooke_H thank you!!! I‘m very lucky it was a mild/moderate case. 4y
cozypunk Thank goodness we now know to roast garlic cloves before eating them whole! 🤭 4y

Pickpick

4🌟
Chernow did a decent job of showing both sides of Hamilton. He showed Hamilton‘s accomplishments but was also honest about the fact that he never knew when to just keep his mouth shut and he was greatly prejudiced against anyone who didn‘t believe in god. I feel like I have a very human view of Hamilton now. The research is definitely thorough and probably as complete as it can be.

GingerAntics That said, this books is DENSE! If you‘re not a historian, you probably don‘t want or need quite this much detail. Even as a historian, this book got frustrating at times. Sometimes it felt like another year of the same thing, so why not give a few examples and say the behaviour was common throughout Hamilton‘s life and career? 6y
GingerAntics By the end of the book, I felt a bit like I‘d been beaten over the head with the feud between the Jeffersonian Republicans and the Hamiltonian Federalists, especially the feud between Jefferson and Hamilton personally. Even his acknowledgements section is quite lengthy, giving great detail on why each person is mentioned. 6y
GingerAntics I was happy to be finally done with the book. I like his style over all, but I would really love his style if he could be more concise. 6y

GingerAntics Chernow spent a great deal of time talking about the deplorable way in which Hamilton‘s contemporaries and history have talked about Hamilton, then says “because of his checkered West Indian past” there was no way Hamilton was going to pass up the duel with Burr that killed him. I don‘t understand why Chernow spent the entire book decrying the bigotry levelled against Hamilton all to level it against him, himself. 6y
GingerAntics I‘m seeing other books by Chernow and wondering if I am interested in the subjects enough to take them on. Sadly, for me, I think the answer is no. My focus is British history, so Hamilton - and the rest of Chernow‘s subject matter - is definitely out of my wheel house. 6y
GingerAntics I just don‘t care enough about the “great men” of America to dedicate the time and energy Chernow‘s writing requires to read another of his books. If this is your wheel house, you‘re probably going to love it and it would be worth it. Lin-Manuel Miranda better believe I love him after all of this. I only read it because he based the musical off of it. Perhaps I should be grateful the musical isn‘t in three parts. 6y

He‘s looking at you, Texas and California!!!
#ronchernow #alexanderhamilton #hugestates

readinginthedark 🤔 I suppose having counties helps? 6y
GingerAntics @readinginthedark not really. There are hundreds of counties here in Texas. If you‘re democrat, you don‘t have a voice here because there are just way too many people. Texas is a solid red state, but if it was broken up into 4 or 5 states, 2-3 of them would be blue. I‘ve seen the proposed maps. 6y
readinginthedark That makes sense. I've never really been a fan of Texas, but some of that is the climate. 😕 6y

GingerAntics @readinginthedark I‘m not a fan of the climate either...although this winter I‘m not a big fan of the weather back home in Minnesota, either. 6y
readinginthedark Good point! Winter up there is hard! 6y
GingerAntics @readinginthedark all the ice and snow...yup. Especially this winter, there have been two massive winter storms now. That‘s just unheard of. 6y

My belief that Thomas Jefferson is just like Trump is now complete. Unfortunately, we have complete historical precedent for Trump in the White House. We never learn from history, so who will our ancestors be burdened with?
I now basically HAVE to homeschool my kids (if I ever have them) because they‘ll be insufferable toward their history teachers other wise.

Swap Jefferson for Trump and it still works. Funny how that all works out.

readinginthedark 😔 This is the most upsetting fact of the current presidency, for me. 6y
GingerAntics @readinginthedark I completely agree. I‘m not sure he has a heart. I‘m not sure he has any feeling for other people at all. Yet a good third of the nation doesn‘t see that. 6y
readinginthedark Agreed. On the bright side, we've made it this far. And I think more people are starting to see the truth of his actions than before. We just have to make it through two more years...things can only get better, I hope. 6y

GingerAntics @readinginthedark 🤞🏻 I wish the Democrats would realise that the solution is NOT for every single democratic politician to run for the presidency. 6y
readinginthedark Right, dividing supporters won't help! 6y
GingerAntics @readinginthedark exactly! It feels like everyday someone else is announcing their campaign. It‘s nuts. One woman couldn‘t even answer why she was the best candidate, her only answer was “yes I am.” Definitely not voting for her. This starting 2 years out is insane, too. Granted, Trump never stopped running, but the entire process has become madness even without taking him into consideration. 6y
readinginthedark They all started two years out last time, too. I guess that's our new precedent. Blech. 6y
GingerAntics @readinginthedark it‘s too early. It‘s just way too early. There needs to be a limit on it, seriously. It‘s like 2019 rolled around and they were falling over themselves to be the first to announce. 🤦🏼‍♀️ 6y

I‘m beginning to genuinely believe that Alexander Hamilton was clairvoyant. I think we‘re looking at just this situation in America right now.

Did Jefferson think history was going to be kind to Cromwell? The English don‘t like him. The Irish don‘t like him. The Scottish don‘t like him. In fact, NO ONE likes him. Jefferson should come to the same fate. He is a deplorable human being. It‘s practically state issued child abuse to indoctrinate our children to believe otherwise.

He reminds me more of Trump with every page I read. Thomas Jefferson should not be hailed as a hero to American children. THIS is why we are where we are today. He literally started party politics and government bickering. Jefferson is the personification of all that people loath about modern day Washington.
