Just finished this on audio.. and wow. This is a wild story about 100 years of the Buendia family, tied to the small town of Macondo. There is passion, humor, sadness, madness, incest, the same handful of names used over and over, and everything that lead to the literary phrase “magical realism”. Genius. #rorygilmorereadinglist #bbrc #yeahbaby #translatedwork #bookspinbingo #wintergames2020 #teamreadnosedreindeer 16pts

Karkar Did you find it hard to follow on audio? 4y
Sarahreadstoomuch @Karkar at the beginning. But then I found the family tree online (and in print copy) and that helped tremendously!! 4y

I know I'm super late in reading this, but even though the people in power have changed, so much of this is still super relevant, maybe even more than it was when this was written. How do we see through structural lies? Lying hasn't changed and being able to spot it is always important. I also loved the bit about Supply Side Jesus. #readingwithrory #rorysbooks #rorygilmorereadinglist #bookspinmarch

I wasn‘t sure how to feel about this book going in since it was never assigned reading. Having read The Catcher in the Rye not long ago, I was a bit concerned that it would be another angsty teenage cliche. I was pleasantly surprised by Charlie. Bits of the story were out there and some issues were barely discussed but overall I still found that I really enjoyed it. #rorygilmorechallenge #rorygilmorereadinglist #rorygilmorereadingchallenge

I never had to read this one in school but wow. What a deep read for a book that was barely over 100 pages. My heart broke at the ending but I could understand George‘s choice, especially played out against Candy and his dog. Definitely recommend. #rorygilmorereadinglist #rorygilmorereadingchallenge #maymadness #booktomovie

Andrew65 Love this! Short but highly effective! 6y
Kaila-ann @Andrew65 agreed! One of my new favorites! 6y
Andrew65 @Kaila-ann For different reasons but I also loved (edited) 6y
Kaila-ann @Andrew65 I haven‘t read that one yet but it‘s on my wishlist. I‘m a little behind on some of classics 😳 lol. 6y
Andrew65 @Kaila-ann Me too in general, but these are two of his I read a lot of years ago. Both stayed with me, yet never read any others. 🤷‍♂️ 6y

I‘ve known about this book for years but never picked it up. I‘m glad I did though. What a fascinating look into the mind of an autistic teenager. The story of reuniting with his mom and working things out with his dad was also very sweet. Would definitely recommend. #rorygilmorereadingchallenge #rorygilmorereadinglist

This book is on the #rorygilmorereadinglist and I‘ve sort of assigned myself the task of tackling some of the books in the #rorygilmorereadingchallenge. To be honest, I struggled through this book and even having finished it I‘m not sure how I feel about it. The ending was not what I expected at all. I can at least say that I‘ve read it. Number 41 of 339.

It's very good, but I seem to have been reading this FOREVER .... revenge is a dish best served very, very cold. #rorygilmorereadinglist #frenchliterature #Dumas #classics #doorstops

Bambolina_81 I have this chunkster waiting on my nightstand for when I finish Les Miserables 🤣 7y
kirriemummy Les Miserables has more diversions than British roadworks!!!! 7y
Bambolina_81 @kirriemummy So I've noticed! I'm still learning about the priest's barn layout 😂 7y

kirriemummy The bit I loved was where most people would write 'This is thernadier. He used to be a soldier. Now, back to my story', Victor Hugo wrote a complete history of the Napoleonic wars.... 7y
tpixie @Bambolina_81 lol 😂 7y
kirriemummy Still kicking it in Paris with the count ... #willthisbookeverend 7y
kirriemummy Still reading. Many years have passed. I have skipped to the end by watching the film. Thoughts: jim cavesiel:Yep. Guy Richie's hair is better than his accent. Mercedie 7y
kirriemummy Mercedes even: curiously ageless and robbed of any personality whatsoever. Dauntless, I shall carry on with the book. 7y

#rorygilmorereadinglist no 87/339 . Took a wee while to get into this one and I agree with others who said that the opera left me cold, but I concentrated on the themes of language, beauty and love and found it much more satisfying. Gorgeous, rich writing, shamelessly romantic and beautifully paced. Loved it.

Dead Souls | Nikolai Vasil'evich Gogol

I'm finding this increasingly hard going. The hero has had to run away from the village he was fleecing and the author has subsequently and literally lost the plot. I find that the more I look at the percentage read thing on on kindle or the view from the bus (cherry blossom) the less likely I am to finish the book- this one's prognosis is not looking good!

I feel like gogol is the sort of guy I would like to stand beside at a society ball, whispering arch sides into my ear as I twittered behind my fan. He's a brilliant observer of the weaknesses of human nature, not so much women, and this has got to be one of the first instances of breaking the third wall.
