Something is amiss on a Greek island with a bunch of bachelorette party ladies.

This book presented very lovable and approachable characters and encompassed the tangled web of female friendships, but also the unwavering love of girlfriends, too. Set in a stunning Greek island backdrop, this piece of fiction makes you wonder “what is going to happen and when”.

RANT ALERT

I liked it - sort of, and only in relation to my enjoyment of the TV show - and will continue the series, but I‘m hoping the books get better from here or I won‘t be continuing for long. For being the Rizzoli and Isles series, Isles wasn‘t even in it. She wasn‘t even mentioned. This one was actually kind of painful. There was a ridiculous amount of sexism that is not present in the show.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics Meat is “men‘s food” and a daughter‘s career - Jane‘s career - is less important than either of her “good looking brothers.” Frankie is a huge jerk in this one, and can‘t be bothered to help either his mother or his sister in the kitchen, and Jane was yelled at for having to rush back to work in the middle of a case because Frankie is home from war and he should be her priority. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 7h
GingerAntics Worse yet, Jane was openly sexually harassed by another detective when he put one of her tampons in her bottle of water. One character even had all white furniture specifically because it was “pure” and “virginal.” Supposedly this was written in 2001, but that one made me question if it was actually written in 1901. It was just deplorable. I know the show came from the books, but so far the show is WAY better. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 (edited) 7h
GingerAntics It doesn‘t take long to remember this was written over 20 years ago, and the reminders never stop coming. From medical charting being done by hand, the explanations of what chat rooms are, what CODIS and VICAP are, to referring to a character as not quite as attractive as Mel Gibson but still good looking, the dated references just keep on coming. That Mel Gibson reference did NOT age well at all. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 7h

GingerAntics It even refers to AOL accounts being used in office settings (which I never knew was a thing seeing how expensive it was). There was also a black guy with a cop‘s boot on his neck and no one batting an eyelash. I nearly stopped at that point. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 7h
GingerAntics The narrator was HORRIBLE. She doesn‘t know how to pronounce the first victim‘s name, Ortiz (and apparently no one else involved in the production of the audiobook knew either). She also couldn‘t pronounce basil, saline, epinephrine, or synapses. All of these words came up multiple times. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 7h
GingerAntics Considering the author is a medical doctor, you‘d think you‘d get someone who could say these basic words, but no. Considering this version of the audiobook was recorded in 2020, it‘s just ridiculous. #TessGerritsen #TheSurgeon #RizzoliAndIsles

AnnCrystal I haven't watched the show or read the books, but did some web research for you, here is what I found:

“Rizzoli appears in the series' first novel, The Surgeon, and Isles is introduced in the second, The Apprentice, which serves as the basis for the television series.“

Hope this helps 😉📚📺💝.

I bailed on this about 50% thru. I only finished it because it was shortlisted for #CanadaReads2025. The ending 10% was the best part of the book and the only reason I'm giving it 3 ⭐ instead of 2. The ending makes the reader feel guilty for disliking the rest. 😆

Since I‘ve been home the last 7 months, my mother has gotten me hooked on the TV show Rizzoli and Isles. When I found out it was based on a series of novels and short stories, I knew I had to read them. My mother says Maura Isles reminds me of her… it‘s better than Sheldon Cooper so I‘m down. lol

GingerAntics No Isles in this one and the narrator can‘t even say the name Ortiz. I‘m just chugging through so I can get to the next book with Isles in it. 12h

The Bree Taggert Series is another female detective series that I enjoyed. It begins with the murder of Bree's sister in a different town, prompting Bree to move there to take care of her sister's children. This event dramatically changes her life. The series intertwines both personal and professional aspects of Bree's journey, as she balances her family life while solving crimes. 🎧

Re-read before reading the sequel which just came out. Women assassins taking out terrible people, including Nazis, seems like an appropriate read for the current times.

I‘m not sure exactly what I was expecting, I think probably one of those “see the world through the eyes of a neurodivergent protagonist, and realize that ‘strange‘ is in the eye of the beholder” type books. This was not that - it was a crime thriller, and a lot darker and more graphic than I expected.

#bookspin #auldlangspine

CSeydel I‘m looking askance at quite a few reviewers who describe this as “Eleanor Oliphant but with a dark twist” because in my recollection Eleanor Oliphant DID have a dark twist! This was more like an … entire dark storyline (edited) 2d
Ruthiella Yeah. I found this book quite disturbing. 2d
CBee @CSeydel I tend to gravitate towards the darker reads with a few lighter ones thrown in - as you can see 😂🤷‍♀️ 2d

AmyG I loved this book. It was so utterly disturbing. Like @CBee, I love a good, dark read. 2d

CBee @AmyG 👯 ♥️ 2d
CSeydel @CBee I am probably too stingy with my stars - I enjoyed it for what it was! I read it pretty much all in one go (sitting in the car for 6 hours on Friday) which was a good way to do it. I definitely hoped for a different ending where Steve was concerned, but truly it was a very plausible ending. Same with Sally (although it was nice that Nugent throws us a little glimmer of hope, with the letter). 2d
CSeydel It did feel like Sally‘s personal growth happened very fast given that she was already in her 40s, so the sudden setback felt realistic to me. I agree with some critics that ending felt a little rapid, but that always tends to be the case with thrillers - once the suspense is resolved you can‘t really spend 100 pages sorting through the aftermath. 2d
CSeydel I think I was also expecting a bigger twist where Sally‘s parents were concerned. It felt like there was going to be another secret layer that the dad was hiding - with the burning of Jean‘s papers, for example. But then it just turned out to be “yeah, he was kind of an arrogant jerk.” 2d
CBee @CSeydel not at all! If anything I‘m the opposite - too generous with my stars 😂 1d

I spent part of today reading Mary Stewart with my favourite cat. (He‘s also the only cat I spend significant time with, but nobody tell him that.) I like THIS ROUGH MAGIC so far, but I‘ve had too many interruptions. Here‘s hoping I can dig into a bigger chunk before bed. #MFMarch
